Rule 34 of the internet states “If it exists, there’s porn for it.” So when Angie Rowntree started the female-friendly porn studio Sssh back in 1999, she gained some unprecedented insight into a group oft overlooked in matters of sex and pleasure. Yeah, women.
“Anybody who expects there to be a standard set of genres which appeal to women, or who thinks there’s a convenient and defined answer to what women want in or from porn, would be surprised by how varied and ranging women’s taste in porn actually is,” she told AlterNet. “For many years, what the industry got wrong was believing there was no female audience for their products in the first place.”
In the 16 years since its launch, the site has become one of the web’s premiere porn-for-women platforms. According to Rowntree, most of her female members chose to log on alone.
Women, certainly, are not all alike when it comes to what turns them on. But some erotic interests fall under an umbrella that extends a little shade to everyone.
We reached out to Rowntree to help us sort through what those common interests might be. Check out the list below.
“The single most popular depiction is something we term ‘female-focused foreplay,’ specifically foreplay involving a male partner,” says Rowntree. “What [the mainstream industry] often doesn’t do is emphasize the pleasure or enjoyment of the female characters; when it comes to the sex, it’s still primarily concerned with the masculine point of view and depicting sex acts which appeal to male fantasies.”
According to Rowntree, most mainstream flicks lack a specific focus on female pleasure. “The woman’s pleasure, her enjoyment, needs to matter, however it is being depicted or derived,” she says.
That insight might help explain some user trends unfolding on other platforms. Pornhub’s lesbian category is reported to be a leading favorite among female viewers. According to their analytics team the “for Women” category is 193% more likely to be searched by a woman than by a man. And if you thought that was an impressive stat, give this one a once-over: women are 900 percent more likely to search for the phrase “eating pussy” than men.
“In the years since 50 Shades became a hit, we’ve seen a dramatic rise in interest in BDSM,” says Rowntree. “I think this is about more than just the popularity of the book, though; it’s also driven by the anonymity and privacy of the internet environment, which allows people to explore their sexuality more confidently and openly. I also think 50 Shades made make it more acceptable for people to talk about women as consumers of erotica and porn.”
Susan Wright, founder/president of a sexual rights organization called the National Coalition for Sexual Freedom, once told AlterNet , “Being submissive is very compatible with feminism because it is choosing your own form of sexual expression. In the end, sexuality is empowering—and you can empower people in all the diverse ways that they enjoy sexuality. Power exchanges are one of those ways.”
Back at the Pornhub analytics blog, we find women to be 80-100% more likely to click on extra-explicit categories like hardcore, rough sex, double penetration and gangbang than men.
Though she introduced this bit as a “sweeping generalization,” Rowntree explained that one of the starkest contrasts between male and female porn habits revolves around the idea of connectivity. “From where I sit…women tend to want there to be more of a connection between the performers, whereas men are largely in it strictly for the sex acts depicted.”
In reference to the mainstream scene, Rowntree says, “A lot of scenes seem to go from the first kiss to full-blown intercourse in about 90 seconds.”
“I’m not suggesting that in order for a woman to enjoy a porn movie, the characters all have to be fully developed, or depicted in the context of a loving relationship, or anything like that,” she added. “I just mean women want to see more of a connection between the performers themselves, not necessarily the characters.”
“Women want to see more mutual enjoyment, pleasure and authenticity,” says Rowntree. “Porn in which the woman is a full and willing participant, rather than watching a woman who seems like she’s only there to give the man, or multiple men, something to penetrate. Unless, of course, that is what she enjoys.”
The desire to view something that depicts more mutuality is a growing trend.
“The most heartening thing I’ve seen in the years since I launched Sssh is a transition from women seeking feedback and information focused on pleasing their partner to women being interested in enhancing their own pleasure,” Rowntree said. “They’re putting their own enjoyment on the same level as their partner’s.”
That sounds like something we can all get off on.

May is National Masturbation Month, and we're celebrating with Feeling Yourself , a series exploring the finer points of self-pleasure.
May is National Masturbation Month, and we're celebrating with Feeling Yourself , a series exploring the finer points of self-pleasure.
Everyone has a slightly different ritual when it comes to self-love, but for many people that adventure involves a visit to Pornhub.
We asked the folks at the adult entertainment behemoth to give us a look into what people are searching for when it comes to masturbation videos -- and they've provided some very interesting insights .
When it comes to masturbation-specific search terms, the results are fairly consistent with what they told us last year. There remains an interest in voyeurism, with various searches for "public" and "caught" variety ranking high. Though clearly the general term "masturbation" still reigns supreme.
As for how searches break down by demographic groups, women are 24 percent more likely to watch masturbation videos than men. And users under the age of 35 are far less likely to seek out masturbation videos than people who are 45 and up.
Men and women also differ when it comes to specific searches. Women are 87 percent more likely to search the term "masturbation" and way more likely to search for male-related masturbation videos like "solo male masturbation" (305 percent more likely), "male masturbation" (276 percent more likely), and "hot guy masturbating" (389 percent more likely).
Meanwhile, men are more likely to search for things like "jerk off challenge" (66 percent), "jerk off encouragement" (65 percent), and "jerk off instruction" (51 percent). Make of that what you will.
Geographically speaking, these states lead the way for masturbation searches: New Mexico (27 percent above the national average), Alaska (22 percent above), and Kansas (14 percent above). Meanwhile, these two states are the least likely to search for masturbation videos: Wyoming (42 percent below the national average) and Idaho (38 percent below).
If you're looking for larger geographic patterns, you're more likely to search for masturbation-related videos if you live in the wild, wild southwest than you are if you from the south. California, Nevada, Arizona, and New Mexico are all above the national average while Kentucky, Tennessee, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, Florida, and North and South Carolinas are all below that average.
So there you have it. If you're a woman over 55 living in New Mexico, congratulations: You're probably celebrating National Masturbation Month in style.

NEW YORK ― The most remarkable thing about comedian Louis C.K. masturbating in front of women without their consent is not that he did it ― as he acknowledged in a statement Friday ― but that some people don’t realize how common this is.
In reality, many women, perhaps most, have been forced at some point to see a random man jerk off in front of us ― at a gas station, on a subway car, while driving, or wherever we happen to be existing while female.
The first of three times it happened to me, I was around 5 years old at a Burger King in Opelousas, Louisiana. A man in a corner booth was looking at my mom and me while stroking his exposed penis. She quickly ushered me outside to play in the ball pit and reported him to the manager, who booted him from the restaurant.
When I asked women on Twitter Thursday night about the first time this happened to them, dozens of stories poured in. Country music artist Chely Wright said she’s dealt with eight surprise masturbation attacks in her life. The first time, she was 18 and working as a performer at Opryland USA, a theme park in Nashville, Tennessee.
“I was walking to my car in the employee parking lot when a man in his car yelled out to me, ‘Hey, can you help me with something?‘” Wright wrote. “I thought I should help someone who was asking for help. I approached his car; the drivers’ side window was down. I saw he was doing something with his hand. I looked down and saw that he was masturbating.”
Wright said the man laughed when she saw what he was doing.
“I’ll never forgot what I saw and I’ll never forget the way he laughed,” she said. “I felt scared and embarrassed.”
I was in high school the first time it happened to me. Was reading at a bookstore, heard panting sounds & turned to see a guy masturbating. Told a cop who was there. He asked me if I was sure about what I saw and, get this, what sounds he was making?
The first time it happened to me I was 8ish & in a schoolbus & a guy drove by pointing to himself beating off. He was wearing a red plaid suit and had to have been at least 70.
i can't even remember the first time this happened to me. the most vivid time was in college when a man trekked through the snow at night and pressed himself up against a full-wall window in my friend's MTL apt and masturbated while watching us. it was terrifying.
Another woman, Leah Spurlock, says she was so embarrassed by the two similar incidents that happened to her that she’s always felt “cursed in some weird sick way,” not realizing how common this is.
The first time, Spurlock was 8 years old at a gas station in Georgia. A white, middle-aged man pulled up beside her family’s van where she was sitting. She writes:
He stared until I looked at him. He unzipped his pants and pulled out his penis... I positioned myself to keep my brother from seeing anything if he happened to glance out the window. I looked back out the window and he was masturbating and staring at me. As my mom came out of the gas station he drove away. I was devastated. I had never seen a penis. I didn’t know what he was doing. I never told anyone and felt sick inside for years and years. I remember it so vividly that I feel like I would recognize the man 29 years later.
Sometimes, men use technology to pull a Louis C.K. from a distance. Soraya Chemaly, a feminist writer and activist, says random men regularly send her unsolicited photos of themselves masturbating. And Priscilla Frank, an arts and culture reporter for HuffPost, says a man once approached her on the street in Brooklyn, New York, chatted her up for a few minutes and then asked for her number. She gave it to him, because he “seemed cute/cool.” Later, he called her from an anonymous number and audibly masturbated on the phone.
“I hung up and he kept calling back,” she said. “Eventually he came on my answering machine and never called again.”
Eve Peyser, a politics writer at Vice, also put out a call Thursday for women’s stories of men masturbating at them. As of Friday afternoon, her tweet had drawn more than 1,800 responses.
when's the first time a man jerked off in front of you without your consent? I'll go first: when I was 12, a man on the L train jerked off in front of me and my friends
Psychologists say this behavior is a form of sexual violence, and men do it because they’re less likely to be caught or punished than if they rape or physically assault someone.
In the absence of a clear means of recourse, women and girls generally have to either ignore the behavior or fight back however they can. Katie Smith, a woman from Delray Beach, Florida, says that when she was 10, she and her friends threw eggs and rocks at a man who had followed their school bus while masturbating.
“I still remember the look on his face when we did it,” she said. “I’ve always hoped it gave him lifelong performance anxiety.”
