Some odor after sex makes sense: You're doing an aerobic activity that involves vaginal secretions, possibly semen, a lubricant, and a latex condom, not to mention two sweaty humans. But if the scent definitely smells off, there could be an underlying health-related reason. We asked Sherry Ross, MD, ob-gyn and author of She-ology: The Definitive Guide to Women's Intimate Health. Period , the many things that can leave an after-sex smell in your vagina.

Is the smell noticeably fishy? Then there's a chance it's due to a condition known as bacterial vaginosis (BV), which occurs when there is an overgrowth of certain bacteria in the vagina. While many women with BV don't have symptoms, some might notice a thin white discharge, pain, itching, and a fishy odor that may be especially strong after having sex.

Some STIs, such as trichomoniasis , can also cause a foul odor. Anytime you're concerned about a sex-related smell (or any vaginal odor), don't hesitate to see your ob-gyn, who can screen for these conditions and prescribe antibiotics if need be to treat an STI or BV.

Losing a tampon inside of your vagina may sound like your worst nightmare, but it's absolutely possible to not be able to feel the string after sex. If left inside for too long, a tampon can definitely leave an unfavorable odor as well and the risk of toxic shock syndrome (TSS).

To remove a lost tampon, sit on the toilet and bear down. like you're having a bowel movement, and reach inside with your (clean) fingers. If you can't reach it, call your gynecologist, who can definitely remove it for you.

Sex is already a pretty sweaty activity, so a musky odor is sure to be present, especially if you haven't showered before doing the deed. "The vagina has sweat glands and hair follicles, which can attract bacteria and contribute to strong odor," Dr. Ross previously told Health . The vagina's location near the anus makes is crucial that you keep the area clean, to avoid bacteria buildup that can lead to foul odors, she adds.

Anyone that's ever used a latex condom knows they have a distinct scent that can get left behind after sex. Due to the vagina's sensitivity, anything new introduced to it can offset its natural smell according to Dr. Ross. If you're not a fan of latex condoms, whether you're allergic or they simply smell funny, try a polyurethane-based condom instead.

Do you feel like your vagina smells like your boyfriend after sex? That's completely normal. Introducing your vagina to a new sexual partner falls on the list of things that can offset your vagina's natural smell like sex toys and spermicides according to Dr. Ross. "Not all odors are bad but if the odor is persistent for days following sex and you are experiencing other symptoms including a vaginal discharge, itching, redness and vulvar swelling you should see your healthcare provider," says Dr. Ross.

Many vagina owners don’t realize that semen can be the cause of unpleasant smells from their lady bits, but t here are actually a few reasons a man’s “elixir” may cause your yoni some distress.
Like anything that contains proteins, the smell of semen changes when it decomposes inside the vagina.
But that’s not to say you don’t have a healthy vagina or that you should douche or wash inside your vagina, because that will weaken your vagina’s own immune system!
Vaginas are amazing self-cleansing pleasure palaces with an immune system of their own.
The key to optimum functioning and a healthy vagina lies in its pH and a sufficient amount of healthy bacteria. A healthy vagina is fairly acidic , with a pH value between 3.8 – 4.5, which is perfect for the healthy bacteria to thrive, but too acidic for “bad” bacteria to grow.
When the pH becomes more alkaline, i.e. a higher number on the pH scale, it becomes a great place for “bad” bacteria to grow, which will produce a different kind of vaginal smell.
So, a healthy vagina is supposed to have a certain odor. But in the case when the smell changes after your partner has ejaculated inside you, why does this happen?
Semen has a pH of 7.2 – 8, which, when ejaculated into the vagina will affect the vaginal pH balance temporarily. If the immune system of the vagina is healthy to start, with an acidic pH value, and a sufficient amount of healthy bacteria, the occasional dose of semen normally won’t cause any trouble.
The male body combines the best of vital essences to produce semen, to ensure it is high-quality baby-making juice!
According to the Chinese Taoist tradition, men will benefit greatly from not wasting this precious liquid every time they have sex. And from the perspective of a Tantrika, why ejaculate when your orgasm actually doesn’t depend on it???
Through many years of teaching men to separate orgasm from ejaculation our team of Authentic Tantra teachers and I have seen how rewarding this is for these men and their female partners.
The men experience an increase in vitality and physical functioning ( including their ability to last longer ) as they retain their semen for 4-8 weeks at a time, while enjoying multi-orgasmic love making sessions.
Their female partners enjoy longer and multi-orgasmic love-making sessions, and their vaginal pH is less likely to be thrown off-balance by semen.
Watch Marthe describe how to restore pH balance to your yoni after a healthy dose of semen.
Not sure what you are referring to. Do we have a typo in there somewhere?
This video was woefully inadequate to address the question. When the yoni smells bad, the woman usually has bacterial vaginosis, also called BV. This is an extremely common imbalance, and extremely hard to get rid of. Some women have it for years, or even decades. The cures given by doctors don’t work the majority of the time, the recurrence rate is well over 50%. Why do you not even mention BV in this video? Yes it is often caused by semen and menstruation can cause recurrences. There are natural ways to eliminate it from your system. If you are experiencing an imbalance such as yeast or BV, douching with THE RIGHT special formula is actually the first thing you SHOULD do to wash out the bad bacteria and restore normal acidic Ph. No, you should NOT douche when everything is fine, but when everything is NOT fine, it is step number 1 toward getting back in balance. If anyone reading this is suffering, you may contact me for the complete protocol to cure this horrible common problem of BV.
Thanks for your comment. The questions was not “what causes vaginal odor in general?”. This video was in answer to a question a viewer sent us regarding semen specifically making her vagina smell different. We have several other articles that address the issue of how to keep your vagina happy and healthy overall. These other articles address the topic of overall vaginal health and BV. As I said, this video and article were meant to specifically address the issue of semen inside the vagina.
What are some natural ways to eliminate BV from your system?
Get a boric acid vaginal pill. And some women probiotics. The boric acid ONKY GOES IN THE VAGINA!! The probiotic daily like I use “Queen v probiotics, from Walmart.. blue cap” both together out my vagina back into perfect functionality.
Love to get some Insife, have a random on occasion problem with this not sure if it pertains to my boyfriends sdcrestions… but just curious if even a long bath could trigger this.
Thank you,
Patty
Hello Patty. Thanks so much for asking. Here is a podcast Interview I did awhile back with women’s sexual health expert S.Denise Jefferson. I have a few other interviews with other female sexual health experts as well.

Hey can you please send me your natural cure for BV?
No it is not good to douche at all period…whether your ph is right or not. If you’ve gone to the doctor and they prescribed you an antibiotic and it didn’t help then there is something else wrong. I’ve had bv a cpl times in the past and the antibiotics my doc prescribed me worked every time. She explained what the question was that she was asked. Ever time my boyfriend and I have sex, usually the next day I will smell because I now know it’s because of his semen breaking down inside of me. Just because for some reason you’re having reoccurring infections doesn’t mean she didn’t explain it correctly. If I were you I’d go get your shit checked out by a different doctor. Oh and p.s. not that many women suffer from vaginal infections so idk where you got that # from
I’m not sure where you got your information but you are completely wrong. There are LOTS of women who have had or struggle with some type of infection. You are also wrong about douching, you can make your own douch that Is very healthy and will help your pH stay balanced for anyone who has that probben such as myself. You clearly need to get your head out of the sand and do some research
Douching is a topic of considerable debate. Every female sexual health expert I have spoken to in the past 10 years speaks strongly AGAINST douching. All of these women I have spoken with are experts in the field and many have multiple PHD’s related to women’s sexual health. That being said, I personally have also learned about ACV douches and some of the other methods you mention above to reset healthy vaginal PH. In regards to BV, which btw was not actually the topic of this video or this article, the consensus seems to be to go to your gyno and get an antibiotic. Then attempt to maintain healthy vaginal PH with a healthy diet and probiotic supplements. In regards to the yoni smelling different after semen, my favorite female sexual health doctor suggests inserting a probiotic capsule into the vagina to boost the beneficial bacteria and re-establish the acidic environment.
What is the correct way to get rid of BV
If you have BV, you should NOT douche. Talk to your doctor about a probiotic vaginal suppository. It has helped me with my reoccurring BV.
Ummm B.V. is not difficult to get rid of. In fact it’s quite simple when you go to your OB/GYN and get metronidazole. Treats it just fine. And if a woman doesn’t know that she has that oh my god she’s stupid. It has a very distinct smell it has a very distinct white texture it’s not normal at all. It’s just a pH in balance and it can be resolved very quickly with metronidazole!
Also recurring bacterial vaginosis probably is an indication that the doctor prescribed too high of a dose of metronidazole you don’t need an extremely high dose to get rid of it especially when you first catch it. When I first had it when I was young 19 my first OB was giving me way too high of a dose and it was burning the crap out of me and then I’dI get yeast infections and then I’d have to be treated with an anti-fungal and it was just reoccurring. I finally went to a specialist at age 20 and have been with him since he stopped that cycle. He knows what to do properly. He lowered the dose and I’ve had it twice in my life. I don’t have a smell. I have never douched because wow don’t need to . Like my doctor has explained to me the Vagina is a self cleaner, and it needs to stay at its normal pH and if you start douching and messing around with it you can really mess it up. Opening it up for Bacterial vaginosis . Doctors know the difference between BV and an STD as well. There is over the counter metronidazole but I don’t recommend it. I recommend using the antibiotic pill form. Because the metronidazole comes in tubes you put it directly in your vagina and then your pH balance can get really messed up. OTC don’t always work right .
Hi. How can I contact you? I have a few questions in regards to this.
I have been suffering off and on… I am currently dealing with it because of my partner, mostly. I do everything I can to keep it in check but am looking for as much information and help as I can as like you pointed out here… There really aren’t many resources other than other women for help. I even had a nurse shame me when I suggested I had BV and insisted it was yeast… even made fun of me in the hallway to another nurse. I called my doctor when the results came in to tell her what had happened after I was proven right yet again… Reoccurant BV pisses off nurses.. go figure, we arent aloud to know our own bodies
I would love to know what you suggest. I have had recurring BV with my current partner and it seems his semen is the problem. I douche with a 50/50 mix of hydrogen peroxide which keeps it at bay, then when we are apart my BV goes away. I would love to be able to just be normal again and not have to go through the trouble of always having to do this
how can i contact you? I suffer from BV terribly pls help!! pls email me tcharity33@yahoo.com PLEASE Thanks!!
How would u treat b.v your the I’ve heard say doche is the 1st thing you should do .which I believe as well. What is the right formula?
Hey can you tell me what to do as far as Bv I been suffering for a very long time
Hello I think that’s what is happening to me. I have been to the doctors several times they have giving me medicine to supposedly cure this bacteria but nothing seems to work. I don’t know what to do. You said maybe douching my help. I’ve done that too. What do you suggest.
I would like more information I am suffering from this recurring and I am sick of it!
I’m interested in hearing the “complete protocol” for BV. I dont usually have bad or fishy odor, however after my boyfriend ejaculated inside me, I noticed my smell was different but not bad, then a few days later it became fishy.
Please help me out my email is touia1991@gmail.com
Hi I want this special formula to get rid of BV.
I’ve been blaming my bg that I smell because of his semen deposits, he categorically denied it. Help! His semen smells because his diet is atrocious. What do I do?
What is the complete protocol into getting ride of bv
Hi, I have had a reoccurrence of BV for a while. What should I do exactly to get rid of it.
Please help me with how to cure this recurring BV (Bactierial Vaginosis)???
For men, specifically how do you separate orgasm from ejaculation?
Great question! There are several techniques for separating orgasm from ejaculation. These techniques are what we teach in our Tantra Training programs. You can find out more about our programs for men here- http://authentictantra.com/tantra-for-men/
and for women here- http://authentictantra.com/tantra-for-women/
Then you have to douche after sex or the vagina will smell bad
No! No! P push it out. You don’t have to douche every time you have sex. I’ve been with my husband for 20 years. And we have a very healthy sexual relationship. Everyday or every other day. I don’t douche. I don’t have issues. However I do pee afterwards always. Wipe it well. I have a healthy vagina. Rarely I’v had a musky smell from him. Rare very rare but I do not use stuff to make my pH balance worse. Semen already plays a part in doing that it’s very alkaline and we are acidic. So douching would make it even worse. If you read studies simply using the bathroom afterwards is your best bet. You can push most of it out.
Having a fishy smell from my vaginal and I am 20 weeks pregnant… there is some itching as well but no pain. Any advice?
I will be doing a radio show about this topic on March 1st. I will ask this question to my quest, sexual wellness expert Nina Helms.
