Do you have problems modelling female anatomy, face and hair?
Do you want to learn how to make a realistic high poly model, leather, clothes, weapons and everything only in Zbrush, fast and efficient?
Then I welcome you to Nexttut education’s Female character creation in ZBrush course.
My name is Nikolay and I am a 3D character artist for games for about 10 years now. I have worked for numerous games and currently, work for one of the world’s most famous game companies – Gameloft.
By the end of this course, you’ll be able to model good looking female characters with clothing, accessories, and weapons in Zbrush from start to finish.
We will start by spending 30 minutes to customize our workflow in Zbrush so we could work much faster and efficient. Then we will make the female head where I will explain what you should watch for in a female head modelling. Then we will make a placeholder hair, which will be good enough for more cartoon base render. Then we will make the teeth, and eyes from scratch. After that we will make the female body, again from a sphere, following our concept. After we are done with our female body, we will start making a 3D sketch of our model, to get the correct placement of all our accessories and clothes, this is a pretty important stage in the end of which we will have a very good idea how our model will look when it’s finished.
Then it will be time to start extracting clothes, belts and other pieces of clothing. We will also make a brush that will make the placement of all those small metal parts like belt buckles, very easy and fast. After that, we will start refining all those things that we have made, and the model will start to look pretty good. Then it will be time to do the dagger and the sword separately, and add them to the scene. Once we are happy with the overall look of our character I will show you how to make good hair with fibermesh in Zbrush. Finally, we will pose the character, export render passes from Zbrush, and compose a final beauty render in Photoshop.
This course is not designed for absolute Zbrush beginners , I expect you to have some sort of ZBrush experience. But intermediate Zbrush users and even professionals could learn a lot from the techniques and workflow I show in this course.
I see a a few complain that the videos are too long or that there is a lack of voice over commentary so to those I would say, read before you purchase something. The tutor mentions that this is not an anatomy course nor does it go over the technicalities of character creation. What you can expect after you’re done, is that you’ll understand everything there is to it in Zbrush to create anything your mind can conceive in future. For those that are new to Zbrush and want to find the best gateway to character creation in Zbrush, this is IT!!
I would say that this course, combined with a thorough anatomy course and you’re golden.
Cheers mate!
First let me say the instructor of this course is obviously a talented artist and none of what I will outline below should lead anyone to believe otherwise.
The main positive about this course and the primary reason I wouldn’t score it lower is that there’s a lot of video here and all of it in real time so you can see exactly how the instructor goes about creating the character, and the instructor uses a wide array of tools which means these videos touch on a wide array of topics. This on its own can be a valuable teaching tool that is shockingly hard to find otherwise.
However the artists lack of proficiency with the English language made this a hard series to follow and learn from. When providing verbal instructions on what or how to accomplish something instead of being told why to do it a certain way or what pitfalls you may avoid by doing it a certain way; you are told that its “cool” or “very cool”. Perhaps for future courses a script may be a good idea to give the instructor time to think through the translation of what he’s trying to explain. This combines with the instructor going very quickly through the sculpting process often not explaining what he’s doing or why leads to a very poor learning experience.
On a personal note I found the videos a little long to be good to follow along with. This is pure personal preference but I would rather shorter videos focusing on one specific aspect that I can watch through once, then implement myself with the ability to easily go back and re-watch if the element is proving to be particularly tricky to grasp. The length of the videos and the way multiple aspects are covered in each also means that the naming sometimes doesn’t accurately portray the content of the video so back tracking to find specific information can be a frustration.
Overall I would say this is an alright supplement on the topic with its hours of video content alone. But I would advise looking elsewhere if you want a comprehensive lesson.
I haven’t haven’t finished this course but so far I like it. Hope this is what I need to improve my skill
Hight value for that tutorial. no problem. Topics are great 🙂
This is exactly what I’ve been looking for a while! A very detailed tutorial from start to finish. 10/5 with no questions.
Everything cool, by the way, the author is so funny, never change!
It’s one of the best tutorial i’ve purchased so far. Everything is in real time pace. Well explained. Joy to watch. Well done!
This is worth the money! it’s fairly easy to follow and Niko is a very good and funny tutor (which is important when you’re listening to him for 26 hours). I felt like I learnt so much just from the first chapter. I strongly recommend this if you’re new to Zbrush!
He spends two, 20 minute long videos, telling us how to setup a decent workspace.. Then, when it comes to modelling the head, he just rushes through it and makes it seem like it’s actually a narrated video. He doesn’t explain why he’s doing what he’s doing and just goes really fast.
Had I known that it was going to be like this, I’d not have bought it.
The author is extremely detailed on each step of the sculpting process. Great deal!
This author includes absolutely every step and stroke from the initial sphere to the final clothing folds and all in extreme detail.
If you’re looking for an excellent, well-paced example of how to produce a character from total scratch and all the steps involved, this is it. As the clothing and accessories are also sculpted in Zbrush, this is a fantastic example of how to create similar items in Zbrush as well. I was especially interested in his approach to hair and accessories and wasn’t disappointed.
All in all, the author is a superb artist and offers a wealth of knowledge in this lesson. There’s just so much info on using all of the functions and tools in Zbrush that I can’t recommend it enough. I’ve already purchased more from them and hope to see them continue sharing content.
I’ve bought these lessons and another series by the same author and I’m very satisfied. There’s a lot of information and a lot to learn. Great value!

Carlos Eduardo Neitzke Alves says : This course is a true gem, definitely worth every penny spent in it. I would consider myself an intermediary to advanced Zbrush user, I have done my share of courses and yet I personally found this course to be outstanding among those. I loved the techniques for belts the author used, it turned the process that I always found clumsy at best to something natural and fun, and the sword making process helped me bridge some of my low poly training up to Zbrush and boost my toolset, making me work more in Zbrush and less in Blender, with improved speed. The instructor's accent isn't hard at all to follow, even with English being my second language(Brazilian here) and I actually loved his insight throughout the course, I really feel like I would easily be friends with the author. Looking forward to any new courses from him, instant buy from me.
Daniel Shink says: Precise...fun...interesting course. A great talented artist demonstrating the work needed to make a cool 3d character. Thank you and great job sir.
Clay Finau says : Invaluable commentary that is so in-depth- also very easy workflows and approaches. I especially enjoys that nothing is sped up and mistakes are shown before they are fixed. Please please do more like this.

It was amazing. I learnt a lot during this course. It was my second chacarter to make, but I completly greatful that I achieved. Thanks Nikolay for making these videos. He is the best teacher and a mentor! And by the way, I liked his jokes, because without them the learning time won't be so much fun!!!!
This course is awesome and Niko is the man! Love the details and the explanations throughout!

Thank you so much. I am glad you like the course.
I'm really impressed by this course. I learned A LOT. One thing that I didn't like is a lot of chatting about practice "you need MORE practice" and etc cause it made me feel insecure and nervous. But I really can recommend this course to intermediate zbrush users! I loved it
Великолепный опыт и много нового в познаниях программы.Спасибо
I've really enjoyed the course! I've learnt a lot!

At the beginning the course, the autor never give you any keyshort. While sculpting a female person, he never shows you the keyshort to do something...

Thank you Melba, glad you like the course.
Enjoying the course so far! I'm glad that the first lesson was going over a custom user interface. While I love how much stuff Zbrush has available, navigating through everything just to get to one button is always a nightmare, and memorizing the hotkeys--while doable--can be tedious. It was great to be able to just drag and drop things where I wanted them. Looking forward to what the rest of the course has to offer.
