WEDNESDAY, May 12, 2021 (HealthDay News) -- Can feeling young at heart, or at least younger than your actual age, help older people live healthier, longer lives?
Yes, according to researchers in Germany.
"Individuals who feel younger than they chronologically are seem to benefit from their younger subjective age in various aspects," explained study lead author Markus Wettstein.
Surveying more than 5,000 middle-aged adults and seniors, his team found that feeling younger seems to create a protective force field against stress . And the "connection seems to work via various pathways," said Wettstein, who was a researcher with the German Centre of Gerontology in Berlin when the study was conducted.
On the one hand, he noted that stress reduction due to a youthful self-perception may translate into tangible physical benefits, including staving off the threat of systemic inflammation .
Having a youthful sense of self may also shape behavior in positive ways that help to keep physical and mental well-being intact.
"Individuals who feel younger [may] engage in health-protective behaviors," Wettstein said. For example, they may be more physically active than those who don't feel quite as young.
In addition, perceiving oneself to be younger might also be a motivating force behind self-improvement, giving folks a greater "health-enhancing" confidence in their ability to accomplish things successfully and effectively.
The study participants' average age was 64. All were enrolled in a larger ongoing study on aging and physical and mental health .
Over three years, they were asked to indicate how old they felt, how much stress they experienced, and how well they could perform basic everyday activities, such as walking, dressing and/or bathing.
Overall, those who reported greater stress also indicated a greater decline in their ability to execute those routine tasks. And that association was generally found to be stronger as people aged.
But the link between stress and impairment was notably weaker among those who indicated they felt younger than their true age. In fact, feeling younger was found to be particularly protective the longer-toothed one actually got.
All of this suggests that interventions designed to help older adults feel younger than they are might help seniors stay healthier and live longer, Wettstein and his colleagues observed.
One U.S. researcher not involved in the study said that prior efforts to explore the question of "subjective age" seem to support the German team's findings.
"I don't find this surprising at all, given the considerable prior research that has shown that feeling younger than your actual age is associated with a wide range of indicators of better health," said Jim Maddux. He's a professor emeritus from George Mason University's Department of Psychology, and a senior scholar with GMU's Center for the Advancement of Well-Being, in Fairfax, Va.
"What this study tells us that's new," Maddux said, "is that there seems to be an indirect path from feeling younger and being healthier, in that feeling younger seems to protect people from the unhealthy effects of stress. And that this effect gets stronger as we get older."
Maddux suggested that feeling young may ultimately give rise to a so-called "virtuous cycle," causing people to take better care of themselves, and thereby refueling a youthful sense of self.
"I just lost the 10 pounds I gained during the pandemic ," Maddux volunteered. "And I certainly feel younger than I did three months ago now that I can see my abs again!"
Still, Wettstein and his team cautioned that prior research suggests the potential health benefits of youthful perceptions may evaporate if the gap between how young one feels and how old one actually is grows too large.
The debate, said Wettstein, is "whether too-optimistic perspectives on one's own aging might have disadvantages, as those over-optimistic individuals might not anticipate certain potential age-related losses, and are thus unprepared when they set in."
For now, more research is required to determine what degree of "positivity" in views on aging -- and which subjective age -- is most beneficial for health, longevity and well-being, he added.
The findings were published in the May issue of Psychology and Aging.

Aging is something that happens to all of us. However, we tend to look at time as detrimental, always wanting to look younger than our age suggests. Your perspective is a huge influence on how you view age and you can feel younger than the numbers suggest if you take the following steps.
Don’t always think about what tomorrow is going to bring or what happened yesterday. Today is a brand new day, a clean slate. For every activity that you participate in, be 100% there instead thinking about what else is on your to-do list. When you are mindful and completely present, age does not even enter into the equation.
Have you ever met a person who always interjects in a conversation and never listens to your thoughts? Rude! Well, learn from them and decide that you will not do that to anyone else. Listen to what others have to say and think before you respond. When you do this, you will notice that you begin to truly care about what the other person is saying and you will find that wisdom can be beyond age if you will just listen. You may learn something from someone younger than you, which will make you feel younger than your peers.
Choose what you read and watch on the TV carefully. The more you read the news and other information sources that are full of negativity, the more that you will begin to see life that way. When you open up to continually reading positive new things and watching things that interest you and are a good influence, you will not see age in the same light. You will feel much younger and realize that your age is just a number and is not a constraint on you.
We all know a person who believes they know everything, and someone who is the exact opposite who always feels inferior to others. Age can play with our minds, tricking us into believing either that we know everything or we are too old to know anything. We are never to old to learn something new and open to up to sharing with others. Knowledge is a gift, and once you share it we can all learn. Let go of saying you are too experienced or do not know enough, and explore the possibilities. Age will not be an issue then.
When you are around younger generations, you will always learn something and be caught up with what is happening in their world. Younger people will look to you for advice and wisdom. Are you having trouble finding someone to talk to? Just walk into your local coffee shop and strike up a conversation. This will make you feel younger and being around younger people will bring out the best in you. You will stop going on about how old you are!
When you eat a whole food diet that does not include processed foods and you get adequate exercise, it is proven that you will not only feel younger but can do things that you might not have believed were possible. Take Fauja Singh for instance, who ran his last marathon at the young age of 101. When you fuel your body properly and move naturally, you can do anything, and physically you’ll be a lot younger than your chronological age.
You know that sleep is important, but do you know how important? Sleep allows our bodies time to for leptin activation and optimal hormone output. In layman’s terms, sleep keeps us healthy. Without a sound night’s rest, you will start to see yourself aging faster, along with developing associated health issues. Turn off the lights and get to bed earlier.
Getting into a routine and good habits is easy. When you start adding something new and different into your day, you begin to take on a different perspective. You may even find a new hobby or sideline that you really love. You are no longer focused on age being an issue if you truly enjoy what you are doing.
Attitude is one of the main keys in life. The more optimistic and positive you are, the more you will see the joys in life. You will continue to look at the opportunities and not focus on the negative aspects.
Stressors are everywhere in our environment, but it’s all in how you eliminate them that helps you stay young. Start being mindful and focus on what you can do right now instead of tomorrow. Turn off the news and focus on what is happening with you and those closest to you. When you see the good in life, the stressors that once were there are eliminated. Time is construed in our minds and is only a perspective. When we make this our reality and say that we cannot do something solely because of a number, we limit ourselves. But nothing could be further from the truth. I know many people who spend their time being mindful and present today and age is the last thing on their mind. It's easy to get caught in the endless loop of wondering whether you are where you should be at your age. At 12 years old, I expected I'd have a house, a career, and a family by the time I was 22. Instead, I'm now a dog mom with a leased apartment, and I often feel like I'm still a kid at heart. But it turns out, that may be a good thing: A new study found that feeling younger than you are may mean you have a healthier brain, and honestly, this is the best news I've heard all day.
The study, published in the journal Frontiers in Aging Neuroscience , asked a group of adults ages 59 and up to state whether they felt older or younger than they actually were. This self-description, which the researchers called "subjective age," can apparently reflect a person’s physiological health. In other words, if you feel young , your brain may actually show fewer age-related impairments, like early signs of dementia.
"If somebody feels older than their age , it could be sign for them to evaluate their lifestyle, habits and activities that could contribute to brain aging and take measures to better care for their brain health," Dr. Jeanyung Chey, one of the researchers on the study, said in a statement. She noted that how old a person feels could affect how active they are, which in turn could affect their overall health. As someone who frequently feels like I'm actually closer to 80 than 18, this definitely gives me some extra motivation to stay active. While these findings clearly illuminate how much your mindset has to do with your overall health, it's easy to give your noggin an extra boost through nutrition, too.

Raise a glass to her, because as it turns out, science is in her favor: A study published in the journal Age and Ageing found that drinking alcohol (in moderate amounts) earlier in life can help protect against dementia later on.
