February 14th is not only Valentine's Day

February 14th is not only Valentine's Day.
This is a significant date for every inhabitant of our country and especially residents of Rostov.
On this day, formations of the 28th Army under the command of General Vasily Gerasimenko completed a seven-day assault on the Don capital and liberated our city from the Nazi invaders. On the night of February 13-14, 1943, the Red Army broke through the enemy's defenses and entered the city from Bataysk along the frozen Don. Thus, the second occupation of the city was interrupted, in which Rostov was located from July 1942 to February 1943.
Rostov-on-Don was one of the most destroyed cities in the Soviet Union. Before the war, there were 274 industrial enterprises in the city, after its end only six remained, the rest were destroyed. 43,000 residents of the city were shot and tortured by the Nazis, 27,000 of them in Zmievskaya Gully. More than 50 thousand residents of Rostov were abducted to Germany.
Before the war, more than half a million people lived in Rostov-on-Don, after the war – 150,000.
Every year on February 14, citizens remember the date of the liberation of Rostov-on-Don, and pay tribute to the heroic deeds of Soviet soldiers.
Congratulations to everyone on this important date!
