Features and mechanism of SD-WAN

"SD-WAN" is an abbreviation for "Software Defined – WAN". "Software-Defined Networking (SDN)" refers to "Software Defined Networking" and "SD-WAN" means technology in general.

It is the control of the entire network by identifying applications based on user policies and centrally managing the components of the network that handle traffic on WANs (wide area networks) with devices called controllers.

Originally, "SD-WAN" is a method that applies the concept of SDN to WAN connections. The functions and implementation methods differ depending on the vendor, but the general features are as follows.

  1. Realization of highly available hybrid WAN
  2. Application visualization and control
  3. WAN route control based on line quality
  4. Reducing deployment load by introducing zero touch provisioning
  5. Reduction of operating costs through centralized management

By virtualizing the data center WAN, it can be centrally managed and portability is realized. When using multiple VPNs on one line, the disadvantage was that information could not be secured.

However, if you use "SD-WAN", you can create a topology for each VPN and communicate only the necessary information via the optimum route. It is possible to visualize the traffic in the corporate network, and enhance the comfort and safety of cloud services and specific Internet communications.
