MFSB makes a bold statement as a soul-jazz band-orchestra to be reckoned with and really shine on a live version of "T.S.O.P. (The Sound Of Philadelphia)". Gamble-Huff relaxed their producing constraints enough so that MFSB could express themselves a little more freely. It's like a sneak preview to their unlimited potential to blend the two genres with a dash of excitement and elegance. The high level of magnificence and excellence achieved with this release was never realized again by MFSB (my opinion). Subsequent releases demonstrated a downward trend toward sounding like any other good studio band-orchestra (my opinion). As with some other Sony Legacy reissues there is no booklet or inner sleeve liner notes, but at least the track listing matches the order in which you will hear them. Still this is great music at a cheap price.

This is not a genuine studio release; it is a "print as you purchase" disc that labels are beginning to release on older merchandise. Sounds fine, but there are nearly no album graphics, and it isn't like buying a genuine disc for collectors. If all you want is the sound, than this can be for you. Unfortunately, that isn't me, and there was no heads up upon purchase.

This was MFSB's debut album and it includes their cover versions of Curtis Mayfield's "Freddie's Dead", Sly & The Family Stone's "Family Affair" and The O'Jays' "Back Stabbers". MFSB's record sales and acrooss-the-board popularity may never have matched those of their labelmates The O'Jays, Billy Paul, Lou Rawls, Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes and Teddy Pendergrass but many of MFSB's albums were pivotal releases that helped shape the sound of such genres as Disco, Quiet Storm and Smooth Jazz. Enjoy!

a great piece of music from my younger days.

the Philadelphia sound is timeless.

Great Instrumental Tunes Here. Truly a classic.

Elemental Music presents MFSB, the debut album by Philadelphia International Records houseband MFSB, originally released in 1973. MFSB (Mother Father Sister Brother) was a pool of more than thirty studio musicians based at Philadelphia's famed Sigma Sound Studios. They worked closely with the production team of Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff and producer/arranger Thom Bell, and backed up such groups as Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes, The O'Jays, The Stylistics, The Spinners, Wilson Pickett, and Billy Paul, among others. The album includes instrumental covers of "Back Stabbers" by The O'Jays, "Family Affair" by Sly & The Family Stone, and "Freddie's Dead" by Curtis Mayfield. In 1974, MFSB released "T.S.O.P. (The Sound of Philadelphia)", also known as the TV Show Soul Train's theme, their first and most successful single, which peaked at number one on the US Billboard pop and R&B charts. MFSB would become known for the hi-hat-dominated disco sounds so popular in the late 1970s and their sound was influential in establishing the disco sound.

"Wow! If you have been looking for a way to get children interested in art, call off the search, it doesn't get better than this."
Colleen Carroll has been involved in education for nearly three decades as a classroom teacher, curriculum writer, and literacy specialist. She lives in the New York City area, where she writes and teaches reading.
NOTE TO PARENTS AND TEACHERS As an elementary school teacher I had the opportunity to show my students many examples of great art. I was always amazed by their enthusiastic responses to the colors, shapes, subjects, and fascinating stories of the artists lives. It wasnt uncommon for us to spend an entire class period looking at and talking about just one work of art. By asking challenging questions, I prompted the children to examine and think very carefully about the art, and then quite naturally they would begin to ask all sorts of interesting questions of their own. These experiences inspired me to write this book and the other volumes in the How Artists See series. How Artists See is designed to teach children about the world by looking at art, and about art by looking at the world through the eyes of great artists. The books encourage children to look critically, answer--and ask--thought-provoking questions, and form an appreciation and understanding of an artists vision. Each book is devoted to a single subject so that children can see how different artists have approached and treated the same theme and begin to understand the importance of individual style. Because I believe that children learn most successfully in an atmosphere of exploration and discovery, Ive included questions that encourage them to formulate ideas and responses for themselves. And because peoples reactions to art are based on their own personal aesthetic, most of the questions are open-ended and have more than one answer. If youre reading aloud to your children or students, give them ample time to look at each work and form their own opinions; it certainly is not necessary to read the whole book in one sitting. Like a good book or movie, art can be enjoyed over and over again, each time with the possibility of revealing something that wasnt seen before. You may notice that dates and other historical information are not included in the main text. I purposely omitted this information in order to focus on the art and those aspects of the world it illustrates. For children who want to learn more about the artists whose works appear in the book, short biographies are provided at the end, along with suggestions for further reading and a list of museums where you can see additional works by each artist. After reading How Artists See, children can do a wide variety of related activities to extend and reinforce all that theyve learned. In addition to the simple activities Ive suggested throughout the main text, they can draw or paint a family portrait, construct a family tree, or plan and cook a special family meal. Since the examples shown here are just a tiny fraction of the great works of art that feature families as their subject, children can go on a scavenger hunt through museums and the many art books in your local library to find other images of families. I hope that you and your children or students will enjoy reading and rereading this book and, by looking at many styles of art, discover how artists share with us their unique ways of seeing and depicting our world.

Colleen Carrol has written an inquiry-based art appreciation book for children that my daughter and I throughly enjoyed. The book embraces a multi -cultureal approach by selecting 16 men and women artists who define in their art work what family is for them. The selection of art work represented in the book is from art history ( Matisse, Winslow Homer, Mary Cassatt Kikugawa Eizan etc.) as well as from contemporary art ( Marisol, Faith Ringgold, and Carmen Lomas Garza ) giving the book a broad range of examples. Details of the given art work are furnished to provide an opportunity to make indept observations. With emphisis on family being the comon denominator, the author raises challenging question for the reader to examine the work of art at hand. The text not only sparks the childs imagination by making inquires but occasionally uses cross referencing of art works in the book to compare and challenge the thought process. The book concludes with a rich note to parents and teachers, artists biographies and age related suggested reading. I highly recommend this book !
