A meme on social media claims to show a young girl posing with her father and contains the following text: “A man followed a young girl into a bathroom at a Target store in Gastonia, saying he identified as a woman. The man’s teeth were knocked out by the girl’s father, who says he identifies as the tooth fairy.” Though the image of the father and daughter is authentic, the claim that they were involved in an incident at Target is false. Reuters found no evidence of incidents matching this allegation taking place in any Target store location.

Though the posts may have been intended as humorous, some Facebook users have taken the claim seriously, leaving comments such as “Go dad,” “A hero for sure!!!” and “I’ll knock teeth out of a man’s mouth if he follows my daughters in a bathroom! Hell NO!”
The father pictured in the photograph in this meme is Gavin Gavlaarr Johnston, who went viral in 2015 after posting a picture of himself smiling with his daughter as she wears a T-shirt with his shirtless picture on it and the words, "Stay Clear Boys, this is my dad!" ( here , here ).
The Reuters Fact Check team reached Johnston via Facebook messenger, who confirmed that he and his daughter are indeed pictured in the newly-circulating meme. Johnston, whose family lives in the United Kingdom, confirmed that the Target story did not happen to him and his daughter.
“To be honest I just scroll past now as there are so many different variants and photos. Oh well, my own fault for going viral in the first place I guess lol,” Johnston told Reuters.
Similar memes using the Johnstons’ image say that the alleged bathroom incident happened in a Target bathroom in Texas ( here ) as well as the bathroom of an Asda supermarket in London, United Kingdom ( here ).
The Gastonia referenced in the meme is likely Gastonia, North Carolina, where there is a Target store ( here ). Target spokesperson Jenna Reck told Reuters via email that she had connected with the company's security team, who confirmed that there had not been an incident like this in a Gastonia Target.
As reported here by Business Insider, Target did face boycott calls after a man exposed himself to a girl in the women's bathroom of one of its Chicago-area stores in 2018.
In a Facebook post ( here ) U.S. evangelist Franklin Graham, president and CEO of the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association, blamed the incident on Target’s bathroom policy, which since 2016 has allowed “transgender team members and guests to use the restroom or fitting room facility that corresponds with their gender identity ( here ).”
Chicago NBC affiliate WMAQ-TV reported here that Target spokesperson Danielle Schumann told the station at the time that the suspect was intoxicated. There is no indication that the man who reportedly exposed himself was transgender.
False. The daughter and father shown in the meme have not been involved in any incident related to a bathroom at Target or another store. There have been no reported incidents similar to the one described in the meme at Target stores near Gastonia, North Carolina.

For almost 30 years, incest dad Robin Price thought he had got away with starting a family with his own sister.
But one day, in early 2015, that all changed, as his past finally caught up with him in the most devastating manner, with a knock on the door from the police.
Price learned that his own daughter had reported him to the authorities in disgust after learning that the people she called mom and dad were half-brother and sister.
Speaking to The Sun Online, the 62-year-old admitted he never thought that day would come.
Price said: “I can’t understand why it’s all being brought up now.”
“We separated and moved on, I thought everything was fine.”
Daughter Donna Price told The Sun how the revelation ruined her memories of her childhood – and to add insult to injury she learned in the course of the court case that Robin wasn’t even her biological father.
But Donna’s two sisters and brother, who tragically died when he was just 7 years old, were all the products of the incestuous pairing.
Robin today claimed he didn’t know Donna’s mother, who we are choosing not to identify to protect her young children from a subsequent relationship, was his sister when they met.
Having grown up not knowing his mother, or even that he had a sister, he said he was raised by his father.
But his life changed when he met a young woman in a pub in the 1980s, saying the pair just “hit it off.”
He said: “When we met, we just fell in love and it snowballed from there.”
“How can you not fall in love with someone, if you meet someone and get along, you’re going to fall for them.”
“Looking at it now, then yes, it was wrong.”
“At the time, to us, that was it, we were happy, we didn’t give a monkey about what anybody else thought.”
As he spoke about the past relationship with his sister, Price’s confession of the sordid relationship came tumbling out.
Bowing his head as he tried to remember details about the sordid relationship, he said: “We met one of my aunties and she kept looking at both of us.
“She said, ‘you know something? You two are brother and sister.’
“I said, ‘oh yeah of course we are.’
Shaking his head, he added: “I felt like somebody stabbed me.
“I just couldn’t believe it when we found out.”
The pair then confronted his estranged mother, who confirmed their worst fears.
Faced with the choice of breaking off the relationship, Price claimed he decided to stay in the relationship because his sister had just learned that she was pregnant, with Donna.
Pushing the truth to the back of his mind, he said the couple then went on to have three more children together.
He said: “It went through our minds once or twice to tell the kids, but by that time, we had said ‘that’s it.’”
The strain of having his family’s murky history examined for the past two years by police before going through the courts has taken its toll on Price.
The currently unemployed warehouse worker now lives with his new partner in a small apartment in southern England.
The apartment is decorated with photographs of his new partner, with the only hint at his former life a photograph of his youngest child Steven.
The boy was only 7 years old when he died in 2001, having suffered from severe epilepsy throughout his life.
Holding up the only photograph he has of his son, Price said he had done everything to help his sister raise their child, even after they separated in 1994.
But after Steven’s death, the pair went their separate ways – only seeing each other again as they faced court over incest charges last month.
The pair, who had been reported by police by their eldest Donna, both pleaded guilty to the charges.
Robin had initially pleaded not guilty to the charge, explaining: “I suppose in one respect we thought what we had done wasn’t wrong.”
But changing the plea to guilty, he said he had been “absolutely dreading” the sentencing, with fears he could be jailed for seven years.
Instead, the judge handed down five and three month suspended sentences for Price and his half-sister respectively.
Now estranged from Donna, Robin said he hoped to one day rekindle his relationship with them.
He said: “I don’t think about the relationship anymore, but I do miss the kids.”

How will you feel as a mother if your husband sexually abuses your innocent daughter? This is the question a woman in Bauchi State is trying to come to terms with, as her husband, Abubakar Magaji, a resident of Liman Kagum in Bauchi local government, did the abominable act of having carnal knowledge of their 11-year-old daughter.
More shocking is the fact that it was not a one-act misadventure but a repeated one. But like a popular saying has it: Many days for a thief and one day for the owner, nemesis eventually caught up with the 45-year-old father when he was arrested and paraded along with others at the Bauchi State command for rape.
When VM sought to know why Abubakar will abuse his own child sexually, he confessed he was tempted by the devil. He added that he could not resist defiling his daughter when his wife left him because of a misunderstanding between them.
The father of four who was ashamed to lift his head while answering questions from journalists said: “I engaged in the ugly act because I had a misunderstanding with my wife and she left me. I am ashamed of my self because it was temptation that led me to do it.
“I divorced her mother and married another wife but unfortunately my wife also left me a month ago so I needed a woman to be with; so that was why I did it. I also have a problem with my sexual libido. It is so terrible that I desire any woman I see, but what stops me from approaching them is that people respect me as a married man. So I felt the only way I could relieve my sexual tension was to sleep with my daughter, since she is so young and had no knowledge about sex.
“It was after I defiled her and I was arrested by the police that I understood the gravity of my offence. I can’t imagine that I did this to my own daughter. I regret my actions and I pray that God will forgive me”.
When VM visited the residence of the suspect at Liman Katagum, a suburb of Bauchi metropolis, a neighbour to Abubakar who did not disclose his name, said that he was shocked to hear that Abubakar was arrested by the police because he defiled his daughter. According to him: “ I was shocked when I discovered that Mallam Abubakar who I had a lot of respect for will stoop that low and sleep with an 11-year-old child that happens to be his daughter.
“This is the highest level of abomination and Islam is against such an act. No matter the excuse, a man does not have the right to defile a girl outside the confines of marriage. This is unacceptable and he deserves to be punished by the law”.
He called for severe punitive measures to be carried on rapists in the country, saying that will serve as a deterrent to those contemplating on engaging in such an act.
Reacting to the development, the state Commissioner of Police, Lawal, Shehu expressed worry over the increasing rate of rape cases in the state and vowed that all rape suspects will be charged to court and prosecuted. He said: “Since January, we have arrested over 10 suspected rapists, only this week we recorded over five cases. It is worrisome that among the suspects arrested is a 45-year-old man who raped his 11-year-old daughter and two aged men who are between 45 to 54 years who raped teenage girls of between two years and four years”.
“This is why I’m sounding a note of caution to parents,especially mothers, to always monitor the movement of their female children. I particularly want to warn mothers to be always on alert because rape is on the increase and teenagers and little children between five and fifteen years are now the victims.
“Any suspect arrested in connection with a rape case will be charged to court and be prosecuted; they should also know that the offence is not bailable. Even when courts are on strike, the suspects will remain in detention till the strike is called off”.

A teenager whose paedophile father raped her up to four times and day and took her on the run has revealed the trauma she suffered during childhood.
Brave Shannon Clifton, now 18, waived her anonymity to reveal the vile beatings and sexual abuse she was subjected to at the hands of her father.
Paedophile Shane Ray Clifton first raped his daughter when she was just six on the living room floor, the Mirror reports.
And when Shannon was 11, he got her pregnant but battered her unconscious and she lost the baby.

When Shannon turned 13, she found out she was pregnant again but twisted Clifton Googled ways to make her miscarry and forced her to do dangerous exercise routines.
At nine months pregnant, a suspicious nurse at school asked Shannon to take a test - but she refused.
Terrified his sickening crimes would be exposed, Clifton went on the run with his daughter which sparked a six day manhunt for the pair.
Two days after they were found, Shannon gave birth to a baby boy - that was both her son and her brother.
Clifton, 36, got a minimum 15 years life sentence for rape at Derby Crown Court in 2015.
The case made headlines after brainwashed Shannon screamed: 'I love you Dad, I miss you.'
Neither Clifton or Shannon could be named during the trial.
Three years on, Shannon has bravely chosen to speak out about the abuse in the hoping of helping others like herself.

She told the paper: 'He stole my life. He turned it into a nightmare I couldn't wake up from – raping and beating me for years. I was frightened and in pain every day.'
Shannon says she 'hates her Dad' but still misses him because he was the family member she had during her childhood.
Clifton took custody of Shannon, whom he called her 'little princess' at the age of five after he split with her mother.
But things quickly changed, and the violent thug began to beat her - even burning her with an iron and hitting her with a hammer.
Speaking about the first time she was raped, Shannon said: 'He got me up in the night and made me lie on the floor in my nightie.
'Then he lay on top of me and just did it. I felt the worst pain imaginable. I was screaming for him to stop, but he wouldn't.
'Afterwards I lay there bleeding. I was sobbing so much I could barely breathe'.
When Shannon gave birth to her child, she said that she 'loved him instantly' but found it 'confusing' that he was also her brother. Stock image
Clifton convinced his daughter that the regular rapes were something all fathers did to their daughters.
He forced Shannon to have sex up to four times a day, and even made her do it in the woods.
She told the Mirror: 'He'd film it and once made me watch it. I was crying – it was so horrible.'
But Shannon still loved her father as he was 'all she had'.
When Shannon gave birth to her child, she said that she 'loved him instantly' but found it 'confusing' that he was also her brother.
A year after her birth, she made the difficult decision to put him up for adoption while she was living in care.
Shannon now suffers from PTSD and attempted suicide at the age of 16. But with the help of her foster family she is rebuilding her life.
She added: 'I'll never know exactly why my dad did what he did, but my aim is to help other abuse victims who read this – so they can find the help they need.'
