But while there have been more options for female plus size cosplays recently, I feel like plus size characters for males have been neglected.
Well today I am here to help you find male plus size cosplay ideas!
For this list, I wanted to mix it up and give you guys a variety of characters. So no, not all these characters are comedy relief or 2nd-rate characters. In fact, some of these options are top-notch heroes and villains. So not only are they good choices but you’ll feel good cosplaying them as well.
*NOTE: I used the term “fat guys” in the most polite way. It’s what people actually search for on Google, so that’s why I’m using that term in this post!
Without further ado, let’s get started!
We tend to look to Anime and video games for cosplay ideas, but why not turn to Western cartoons for inspiration? Peter Griffin is the main character of Family Guy, a funny show that’s been around for a long time now. Peter Griffin is an icon!
When you think of Dragon Ball Z, you probably think of muscular Saiyans, skinny Androids, or Goku’s friends who are all lean and fit. But there are a couple of characters in DBZ worth cosplaying that are actually plus size friendly! These include Nappa , King Kai and Majin Buu (when he feels like transforming). Even though DBZ has been out for over 30 years, the series is still popular today. So if you cosplay from the series, many will recognize who you are.
There are only a handful of plus size characters in League of Legends, but Gragas is one of them. If you ever wanted to be a kickass biker, then Vandal Gragas is the way to go.
D’oh! If you grew up in the 90s (or somehow are still watching the series today), then you definitely know about Homer Simpson. He loves to eat a lot and his IQ level is somewhat…questionable. But make no mistake; Homer is well-known and loved by many.
A lot of Mario characters are plus-size friendly! Mario and Wario are the first to come to mind. But if you rather be a badass villain, why not go for the most well-known bad guy in all of video games: Bowser! He might be a little complex to do, but you’ll look absolutely amazing if you cosplay as Bowser.
There are also other plus size Super Mario characters you can cosplay, such as Boo and Koopa Troopa.
It’s the Juggernaut Bitch! One of the most badass villains of the Marvel Universe, the Juggernaut is an iconic character. He’s a big man who is incredibly strong, so you’ll find many similarities if you cosplay him. All you need is his mask and that custom-made suit.
Captain America is an interesting character. He’s not a simple poster boy hero like Superman. Captain America has been through a lot of tough times and seen the worst in his world. So in that sense, he’s a hero in a troubled world and that’s what makes him special. I think Captain America is a great option in terms of cosplay ideas for fat guys.
Al from FMA might be a small kid in his real form, but his alchemical transformation turns him to a gigantic armored monstrosity! He might not be the easiest cosplay to pull off with all the armor. But he’s definitely a nice option if you’re plus size and looking to create a more challenging cosplay.
Dr. Eggman, Robotnik, whatever you want to call him. You might think he’s just comedy relief but to me, he can be a super cool villain. If you’ve watched the recent Sonic movie, Jim Carrey did an amazing job as Dr. Eggman, portraying him in a crazy and sinister way. This is why I’ve included him on the list. Dr. Eggman is a great option for you big guys out there!
Steven Universe is one of the more popular cartoon series in recent years. Such colorful characters with a colorful story! For cosplay ideas for fat guys, I recommend going for Steven, the main character. He’s very easy to cosplay; all you need is a pink jacket, a t shirt with a star logo, some blue jeans and poofy hair/wig!
Am I the only one that still remembers this lovely song? I actually went to Gangnam last year when I was in Seoul. Psy might not be as popular as when his song came out, but his outfit is very easy to do!
The toad master Jiraiya was Naruto’s teacher in the beginning of the series with a unique personality. He was known to be quite the pervert! It’s too bad that he was killed relatively early in the series. If you’re looking for a sensei type of Naruto cosplay that’s plus size-friendly, then Jiraiya is for you!
Hercules is a big guy, so it’s perfect for plus size cosplayers! He is the strongest man ever, after all.
One of the most memorable and favorite villains in FMA, Gluttony is a character that works for all body shapes and sizes, including plus size. Unlike Al, Gluttony is very easy to pull off. All you really need is black-coloured pants, shoes and a sleeveless shirt. And either have a bald head or wear a mask to cover your hair to look bald.
Of course I would mention Fire Emblem on this list because you know, it’s one of my favorite series! There are so many awesome characters in FE worth cosplaying (especially from Three Houses ), and that includes cosplay ideas for fat guys! Some plus size friendly cosplays from Fire Emblem include:
Here are some more cosplay ideas for fat guys. I included them in a list because I don’t have any photos to share, but thought it would be useful to show you them anyways:

I am a plus size cosplayer. I did not want to be in the beginning, so I cosplayed vicariously through other cosplayers I found on social media, wishing and hoping for the day I would finally be skinny enough to cosplay the characters I loved. I dieted, worked out, and lost some weight, but not enough and not fast enough. I thought, ‘I’ll never get to that ideal weight where I can cosplay the characters I like’ without feeling inadequate, or without some creepy dude commenting that I was too big for that cosplay. It happens. More often than you want to think.
*Spoiler Alert – I was never going to be that “ideal weight and size” for the characters I saw in anime and comics. So now what do I do?
I decided to just start cosplaying. With a ton of encouragement and support from hubs. I decided I would play the easy characters until I was good enough and skinny enough to cosplay the ones I actually wanted to. Because in my mind, I was still too fat to cosplay. Now, years later, I am a bit more comfortable in my cosplay-skin, and have cosplayed characters that don’t necessarily fit my body shape. But I’m not gonna lie, I still feel like I’m too fat to cosplay certain characters at times. Yes, still, even after all this time. I can’t help it – size is everywhere we look and even though we’ve seemingly gone through this ‘plus size is beautiful | every size matters’ revolution, it still feels like the smaller cosplayers are given more love. Just like IRL.
(The same could be said for race, or skin color, as well. Equal support and views just aren’t given when it comes to cosplayers of color and our white counterparts. I’m not here to shame, I’m here to tell the truth. But let’s be honest, there is shame in this truth, is there not?)
I say that because I am just as talented with fabric and Worbla as the next cosplayer. My picture editing skills are pretty damn good, if you ask me; and a ton of work goes into the videos that are up on my YouTube channel. But those consistent 30 likes and 3 comments when I rock my handmade everything Raven cosplay, next to that skinny white girl’s 30,000 likes and comments… well, that shows the bias. And skinny doesn’t always come in shades of white. There are cosplayers out there who get opportunities because of their size and height, versus my stout cosplayer stature. In fact, companies would rather use padding to add hips to skinny cosplayers for their magazine and video shoots than simply finding just as talented and just as beautiful and naturally curvier cosplayers who were born with ample hips to fill that cosplay (true story, by the way, told by Marvel 616).
So even when the character requires a bit of girth, we still find a way to feature and support the skinnier cosplayers. I am not trying to say these cosplayers don’t deserve to be featured, but why can’t we share the spotlight with cosplayers of all shapes and sizes?
And I will admit, the plus-size cosplay scene has gotten much better over the last few years. But it isn’t yet all-inclusive. And it should be.
Sure, if my size is an absolute deal-breaker, I could wait however long it takes to lose the weight. But size doesn’t have to be the thing that stops us from cosplaying. Does it?
I just don’t think you should wait to cosplay until you’re [insert self conscious excuse here]-enough (old enough, young enough, skinny enough, shapely enough, muscular enough, etc.). The time to start cosplaying is when you discover you want to do more than just scroll through Instagram cosplayer feeds. The reality is, however, that the fear of how others will see us and how they will respond to us often holds us back. We’re human – we often strive for acceptance from other humans. And humans will never disappoint in their shallow acceptance of only what they deem to be socially-acceptable in beauty and socially-acceptable in size.
So we wait until we’re ready, and sometimes ready never comes. And then time passes and we get stuck in a “wish I had”, “I should have” mode.
And I get it – most characters we love and want to cosplay are not plus sized. Not even a little bit. So what’s a cosplayer to do?
Is an unnecessary waste of brain-space. Because there is no ideal cosplay body. I’m sorry, have you seen the typical anime character? Not even Barbie can compete with some of those characters – the proportion and size are just unrealistic. Even the animated DC and Marvel shows can be unrealistic in how they portray most female characters.
Why would you want to try to live up to an unrealistic ideal?
The ideal body is your healthy body. And yes, we should all strive to be healthier so that we can live longer. After all, longer lifespan means many more cosplays! But if you’re doing it because you want to shape your body into a shape it was never meant to form… then it becomes unhealthy.
Pro-Tip: if you want to change your body, do it in ways that are healthy and realistic, and because you want to, not because you think people will like you better or accept you more readily. That is a people-problem influenced and encouraged by false societal norms. ‘It ain’t got nothing to do with you.’
We all have the power to make good decisions and healthy choices when and if we want. But that is only up to us and our business.
…Can you cosplay as a plus-size person? How? Where do I even begin? Where will I find costumes that fit my size? And will my size define me as a cosplayer?
These are all great questions, and they are the same questions I struggled with when I first got started. The thing is, sometimes you just need someone who has already been there, done that, and who is willing to share their knowledge.
First and foremost, you can cosplay as a plus size person. You can cosplay as an any-size person because cosplay is for everyone. Periodt.
How? Well before all of that, you will need to decide what character(s) you wish to cosplay. Can you sew? Are you willing to learn? What about foam and Worbla? Not interested in making your own cosplay? That’s okay, there are plenty of people who will create a commission just for you using your measurements. Save up, because you want to pay these hard-working creators what they’re worth!
That last question is important, though. The ONLY thing that defines you as a cosplayer is the effort and the attitude you bring to the table when you step into that character. Not your size. Not your skin color. Not your sexual preference. Not your gender preference.
I have much more to say on this topic, but for now I want to leave you with this:
“Confidence takes up far more room than your body size.” ~Fern
In other words, when we walk into that panel room, or step into that convention hall, our size is not the only thing people see about us. What people see is what you reflect – they see what you want them to see. They can see your talent, your passion, your fandom, your positive attitude, your smile, and, of course, your cosplay. They don’t see your plus-size cosplay… they see the cosplay you put together and the character you represent.
No cosplay body is perfect – we are all flawed, we all have insecurities. So let’s get over all of this unimportant stuff, and back to the actual cosplay.
