Director Jeff Wadlow and his team left a few real and ridiculous plot holes in the film reboot of Fantasy Island.
WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Fantasy Island , in theaters now.
Jeff Wadlow's Fantasy Island isn't a straightforward horror, because as with most films in the genre, it tries to work in a twist to keep the true mastermind secret. At first glance, it seems as if the culprit is Michael Peña's Mr. Roarke, but while he's running the island and leaving guests to be tortured, it turns out the bitter Melanie (Lucy Hale) is behind it all.
However, as she exacts revenge on a crew of visitors who had a hand in a fire that killed her crush, a few plot holes pop up that are too ridiculous to ignore.
Melanie frees the girl who bullied her as a teen, Sloane (Portia Doubleday), after opting against carrying out the fantasy of torturing her. She feels guilty and helps Sloane escape after being kidnapped by the island, which leads to the duo and Damon (Michael Rooker) finding the gem that powers the island. Damon's an investigator sent to figure out the island's secret and this gem's power is so dark, he almost goes mad. He then wants to shut the island down but decides the best bet is to steal the water the gem infects, as this powers the fantasies.
It's hard to understand why he wouldn't want to destroy the diamond rock above the spring, though, that bleeds black into it. This is the source of the infection so while it makes sense to steal water, it'd be smarter to shut the island down. Destroying the gem would have done exactly this and made their escape easier. Without it, Melanie's torture fantasy would have collapsed, meaning the killers pursuing Sloane would have ceased to exist. Damon not crippling the island is a massive oversight and he then proceeds to keep the battery running to go through booby traps, hoping to find a plane to escape.
Eventually, Sloane links with other survivors after Damon's death and they end up retrieving a grenade to blow the gem up. A major hole arises, though, because they're navigating a maze in the gem's dark cave and everyone's being lured away from the path by their own fantasies. Patrick has the grenade but he tells the main group he's going to find the missing people and all they have to do is call him and he'll make his way back.
There's no logic to him running off because it's how people got lost in the first place in the labyrinth. He could have easily given the grenade to Sloane or someone who was heading to the gem immediately. Having him wander off with the weapon shows no creative intelligence, and was only added to force unnecessary drama. To make matters worse, Melanie brings the group back to the gem to destroy it when she and Sloane were near it minutes before and could have done this themselves by trying to disconnect it from the reeds of the spring.
Melanie had Sloane being tortured yet saved her so she could show her bully how she grew up to be a mastermind. Melanie then tried to kill Sloane to show her she had the upper hand. This idea was all over the place because Sloane could have turned on her had she remained someone with a sadistic and cruel mentality. Ironically, Sloane ends up killing Melanie so this twist just felt so forced and dumb in how it paid off.
Melanie actually watches Sloane take a swig of the water from a canteen so she could make her own fantasy come true. The sad thing is that Melanie had the grenade and could have thrown it at Sloane, but elected not to. Later, she also had a gun she could have shot her with. And on top of all of that, Melanie had zombie assassins that were restraining everyone and somehow allowed Sloane to wrestle free and drink the water. Everyone moved in slow motion except Sloane and it's all plot convenience to bring Melanie down. Seriously, Melanie's the villain so she shouldn't have been taking anyone to the cave that could undo her plan.
Directed by Jeff Waldow, Fantasy Island stars Michael Peña, Lucy Hale, Maggie Q, Portia Doubleday, Jimmy O. Yang, Michael Rooker and Ryan Hansen. It is currently in theaters.
I'm a former Chemical Engineer. It was boring so I decided to write about things I love. On the geek side of things, I write about comics, cartoons, video games, television, movies and basically, all things nerdy. I also write about music in terms of punk, indie, hardcore and emo because well, they rock! If you're bored by now, then you also don't want to hear that I write for ESPN on the PR side of things. And yes, I've written sports for them too! Not bad for someone from the Caribbean, eh? To top all this off, I've scribed short films and documentaries, conceptualizing stories and scripts from a human interest and social justice perspective. Business-wise, I make big cheddar (not really) as a copywriter and digital strategist working with some of the top brands in the Latin America region. In closing, let me remind you that the geek shall inherit the Earth. Oh, FYI, I'd love to write the Gargoyles movie for Disney. YOLO. That said, I'm on Twitter @RenaldoMatadeen . So holler.
