A new Fantastic Four series was announced at Marvel's Next Big Thing panel during San Diego Comic-Con
Marvel's First Family will be under the guidance of a new creative team this November. At Marvel's Next Big Thing panel on Saturday at San Diego Comic-Con, Jonathan Hickman teased an all-new run of Fantastic Four following writer Dan Slott's departure from the title.
Marvel also released a teaser image showing a compass, with arrows pointing to east and west. Above the 'N' for north is the word 'writer,' and below the 'S' for south is the word 'artist.' These are seemingly our only clues for who could be working on the title this fall.
Marvel shared the same image on Twitter (opens in new tab) , and fans were quick to comment their choices for the next Fantastic Four series. Writer Al Ewing was mentioned multiple times, and at least one person questioned if Nick Spencer will take up the reins.Β
Another commenter assumed the writer will be Ryan North, who wrote The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl from 2015-2019. This seems likely, given the very blatant compass imagery on the teaser.
And if North is potentially writing Fantastic Four, it's possible he'll be teaming up with artist Matthew Southworth - as in the 'south' portion of the compass rose teaser - who's worked on Spider-Man, Daredevil, and other titles in the Marvel Universe.
Meanwhile, readers are wondering if the compass and its directional arrows imply a west coast Fantastic Four story, which would certainly shake things up.

The new Fantastic Four movie is scheduled to hit movie theaters in November 2024, as revealed at San Diego Comic-Con.
A significant update has come out of San Diego Comic-Con on the long-gestating Fantastic Four reboot. It has been known that a new Fantastic Four movie was heading to the Marvel Cinematic Universe with a reimagining of the group joining their fellow Marvel superheroes. At SDCC, the new film was officially given a release date of Nov. 8, 2024. No casting or plot information was divulged about the project, but now we know when it's coming along with its specific place in the MCU's Phase Five.
It had previously been expected that the new Fantastic Four would close out Phase Five of the MCU. Marvel's plans for the MCU's next phases were explained at SDCC which now shows how Fantastic Four has been set to kick off Phase Six instead. The Phase Five movies that are now on the board are Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania , Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 , The Marvels , Blade, Captain America: New World Order , and Thunderbolts . Disney+ shows will also be a part of Phase Five including Secret Invasion , Echo , Loki season 2, Ironheart , Agatha: Coven of Chaos , and Daredevil: Born Again .
There's more, as other films were also announced to join Fantastic Four in Phase Six. That includes two big releases, as a pair of Avengers movies were announced . Avengers: The Kang Dynasty will come first with a release date set for May 2, 2025, followed by Avengers: Secret Wars on Nov. 7 that year. Kevin Feige also confirmed that the Russo Brothers would not return to direct the upcoming Avengers films.
The introduction of the Fantastic Four into the MCU was recently teased in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness . In the hit film, John Krasinski made a special appearance as Reed Richards after years of fans calling for his casting in that role. It was a fun surprise for fans and an interesting way of involving the group in the MCU years before the new Fantastic Four movie will hit theaters.
With that said, there's certainly no guarantee that Krasinski will also be playing Reed Richards in the upcoming movie. The actor was playing a variant in Doctor Strange 2 , so while he could theoretically come back as the MCU's Mister Fantastic in Fantastic Four , Marvel could just as well cast someone different to play the character. In any case, no casting information has yet been announced for the movie that is in development. He will likely remain a popular choice for the part with fans, as will his wife Emily Blunt who many want to see play Sue Storm.
This will be the fourth Fantastic Four movie to hit theaters. One version was released in 2005 followed by the 2007 sequel Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer. A reboot unconnected to the MCU was also released in 2015, though the film infamously bombed. Even so, many fans can't wait to see this new version finally hit theaters, though the wait till unfortunately be a little while.
Fantastic Four will be released in theaters on Nov. 8, 2024.
