With our society becoming a lot more open and accepting, it is much easier today to not be judged by your sexual orientation, whether you are straight, homosexual or bisexual. Yet, not too long ago, being anything other than straight was considered abnormal to an extent of being treated as a disease and famous people could not dare reveal their references in the open for the fear of being ridiculed and ostracized. Some famous celebrities who never really came out of the closet in public are:
A Norwegian by origin, she had a glorious career as an astronaut when she joined NASA in 1978 and became the first woman in America to go into space at the age of 32, which made her the youngest. She left NASA in 1987 and joined Stanford University’s Center for International Security and Arms Control and in 2001; she founded her own company, namely Sally Ride Science. In 2012, she died after a long drawn battle with pancreatic cancer and in death she revealed something no one knew about her: she was gay. Her partner of 27 years, Tam O’Shaughnessy was also her business partner and co author of the books and though they never hid their relationship, they never announced it either.
More famously known for her feud with Betty Davis, Joan Crawford was allegedly a lesbian and had affairs with several women. According to rumour mills both women were enemies but they never admitted it. During an interview in 1979, Bette finally revealed the truth about their feud and the fact that she still hated Joan, even though it had been ten years since she died. Joan had made sexual advances to Bette who had rejected her and in order to take revenge, Joan had married the man Bette loved, actor Franchot Tone. The LA times published conversations from transcripts of Monroe’s therapy which said that she had an affair with Joan.
Of all the people who were desperate to hide their homosexual status, Raymond burr continued his marvelous acting even in his personal life. His first wife Arnette Sotherland died in a plane crash in 1943, and their beautiful ten year old son Michael Evan Burr who died of Leukemia in 1953. His second marriage to Isabella Ward ended in an annulment while the story of his third wife is tragic too since she died of Cancer in 1955. But as it was discovered later, all of these stories were blatant lies to establish his fake heterosexuality. An actor above par, he worked as the lead in the hit TV shows Perry Mason and Ironside. His long term partner was Benevides when they got together in 1960 and remained so until Burr died in 1993.
An American film director, George Cukor had made more than 50 movies during his career as a director, most famously known for his comedies and literary adaptations. A top director, his most famous works include Camille, Dinner at Eight and Little women. His homosexuality was a secret due to its non acceptance by society at that time and its revelation could be damaging for his career, hence he was allegedly forced to live a double life. His close circle of friends were reportedly aware of his homosexuality and all-boy Sunday pool parties ,and his home was well known as the gathering place for closeted homosexuals of Hollywood; while the rest of the time he always had a woman at his arm, be it a famous actress or a mogul’s wife. This women’s director extracted some of the best performances from actors during his time and is credited with kick-starting the careers of some of the top actors.
Believed to be a closeted homosexual, Gail was a natural beauty who began acting at an early age of 17 after being discovered by Paramount studios. Reportedly, her relationship with her mother was a difficult one, since it was at her insistence that she was forced to begin acting, while she would have preferred sketching and painting. She was married to Guy Madison in 1947, but there were rumours floating around about it being an arranged union, since Gail was gay and the evidence of the same was recorded in the book, ‘The Man Who Invented Rock Hudson’., which suggested that her husband Guy was also homosexual. More than her hidden sexual orientation, she became famous for her alcohol addiction and her resultant run-ins with the law. This addiction not only ruined her marriage but also her career and this once gorgeous actress was found dead on august 27th on her apartment floor.
There are several accounts of his sexuality, with some people claiming that he was completely gay while others saying he was straight, but most rumours state that he was at least bisexual. It is believed that as a struggler, dean was in a relationship with Rodgers Brackett, an established director. They lived together in Brackett’s apartment, who introduced Dean to other actors and people from the industry who could further his career. His rise in fame also increased the rumours about his sexuality which increased post the abrupt break-up of his engagement with actress Pier Angeli, which was believed to be just another fake marriage scenario that most homosexuals from the industry resorted to, to keep their homosexuality under wraps. Accounts from his close friends state that he had several relationships with gay and bi-sexual men, but with no concrete proof and the untimely death of this handsome actor leaves the truth hazy.
One of the most famous revelations in recent times, a tape was outed by private detective Otash’s daughter Colleen, which contained a confession of Rock Hudson about his homosexual status. It had been long believed that Henry Wilson who was rock Hudson’s assistant tried to hide that Rock was gay, by getting him married to his secretary Phyllis gates in 1955. However Phyllis had her doubts and hired a private detective to follow him. This detective recorded a conversation that Rock had with Phyllis when he accepted that he was gay when confronted by her. In her book she describes that her doubts began when he would disappear for hours at a time and dodged phone calls from young men.
He was one of the most famous actors of the 30 and 40’s and his sexual orientation was the source of a lot of controversy on account of his alleged romance with actor Randolph Scott. The rumours were given credence by Rock Hudson’s story which revealed the measures used by Hollywood to cover up homosexuality of artists. His marriage to Virginia Cherril in 1934 was rumoured to be forced by studios to tackle the gay rumours, which made him very depressed and eventually led to a divorce thirteen months later. They shared an apartment till Cary got married and after his divorce they rented a Santa Monica beach house, which was dubbed as the bachelor hall by studios who spread rumours that women were seen frequenting it regularly. According to their friends, Cary and Rudolph lived as a gay couple and frequented Hollywood’s gay social circles, but again by 1940 they were forced to live apart due to pressure by studio bosses at a time where being gay was taboo.
Famously believed to be the inspiration for James Dean and Marlon Brando, Montgomery Cliff was one of the most influential actors of his time on account of his great looks and acting skills. His sexual orientation was a secret that led him to make secret visits to places such as Maine, Ogunquit to meet with gay men. Nothing about his homosexuality was ever published inspite of several affairs with actors. His regular relationship was in 1940 with an actor. It is believed that his secretive homosexual inclination was a cause for torment for him and led him to abuse alcohol and drugs. His acting is often associated with an inner pain which excelled his skills as an actor, which led to strange behavior such as withdrawing into his apartment for days and a growing dependence on painkillers. He was also famous for his great friendship with Elizabeth Taylor with whom he did several movies. His life changed in 1956 after an automobile accident forever changed his appearance and in 1966 he was found dead due to a massive coronary occlusion.
Known as a rebel chick, Hepburn is most famous for being a fashion icon for choosing to wear glamour-less clothes and minimal make up in an era where most other actors would not dare risk being seen without perfect clothes and shoes. Even professionally she played strong-willed and sophisticated roles. Her life was distraught with tragedy, when at a very young age her brother committed suicide on account of an incestuous relationship between them, which was responsible to some extent of her inability to settle down. She allegedly had several affairs, both with men and women during her time and her desire for women was a well known hidden fact. After a brief marriage to Ludlow Ogden Smith, a very public romance was arranged, between her and Spencer Tracey, who was also gay. Books such as Kate: The Woman Who Was Hepburn, by William J Mann and full service both theorize that Kate Hepburn was indeed bisexual. As her rumoured affairs with Laura Harding and Greta Garbo seemed to suggest.
