Meredith Baxter has revealed that she considers her "enormous breasts" a hindrance instead of a blessing, sharing that they made the early days of her career as an actress difficult.
The "Family Ties" star, who played Elyse Keaton on the '80s sitcom, said in an interview with Page Six that she was often harassed, receiving lewd comments and having TV executives talk at her chest. It came to a point where Baxter considered her breasts "the plague of my life."
"People go, ’Oh to have someone wanting you, lusting after you …’ That’s not lust, that’s aggression. ‘Let me take your power away by turning you into a sexual object.’ You can’t even open your mouth then," the 73-year-old actress told the outlet.
Baxter added that she considers the breast reduction surgery she had to undergo the only positive thing about her breast cancer diagnosis in 1999.
The actress, who is now married to wife Nancy Locke, also opened about her struggle with finding contentment even after landing her first big break in the early '70s.
"I had to go through a lot of other s--t first," she revealed. "I got sober in 1990 and met Nancy 15 years later and I had to learn a lot about myself first. That couldn’t have happened at that time because I was married to someone else and I had some drama and trauma to go through first."
Baxter admitted that she only realized she had a problem with alcohol when a producer pointed out to her that her eyes were not focused and the people around her couldn't understand her. These were apparently an indication that she had issues with alcohol.
"So I went to a 12-step program to get people off my back and it took me about 10 years to get the gift of desperation and throw myself into it and do the work I needed to do, which opened up a lot of doors for me,” she explained.
Baxter recently appeared on Lifetime's "Christmas on the Vine ," which premiered Friday. However, she said she believes Thanksgiving is more special than Christmas. She has five children, whom she shares with ex-husbands David Birney and Robert Lewis Bush, and usually feels stressed due to the gifts she has to prepare.
"Thanksgiving, I think, is a much more beloved holiday because it’s just about food," she shared.
Baxter, who announced in 2009 that she was a lesbian , started dating her wife in 2006 and tied the knot with Locke in 2013.
