During the working day, healthcare worker Brett Crane blends in with society’s expectations, but as soon as he goes home, and wherever it is accepted in public places, he sheds off all of his clothes.
The 55-year-old openly admits to having been a nudist all his life and for the past eight years has been chairman of Torbay Sun Club, one of the UK’s largest naturist swim and sauna clubs.
The club, which has been running for more than 40 years, has around 120 active members who range in age from 18 into their 80s, and come from all walks of life and professions such as a retired headteacher, police officer, postman, artist and finance worker in London.
Brett, who is a logistics assistant and lives in Exeter, said: “Most members are couples, although we do have single members. We do like to keep a gender balance if we can and draw members from Exeter, Torbay, Plymouth and further afield.
“The majority are in their 50s although we do have a wide range of ages. Members come from every walk of life from blue collar right through to senior management roles and everything in between.”
To safeguards its members, the club is very clear about what it does and doesn’t offer.
Brett explained: “The club is a naturist club where people come together to relax, socialise and engage in a bit of sport without the encumberment of clothes. There is no sexual activity or swinging, and anyone who acted inappropriately would get thrown out.
“Occasionally we get people make enquiries and get the wrong idea. We are open to new members but we are serious about safe guarding issues for all our members so anyone new has to bring proof of address and photo ID.
“In my eight years as chairperson I have only asked one person to leave because they joined and started pestering a female member which was unwarranted and not reciprocated.”
Torbay Sun Club was formed by a few like-minded souls in Devon who had met at local naturist beaches and wanted regular and formal get-togethers.
Members currently meet for a weekly swim at Totnes Leisure Centre. Other events include its annual nude cruise which is taking place this Friday in Exmouth, spa evenings and a Christmas do.
Brett said: “I joined the club because I have been a naturist my entire life. I didn’t like wearing clothes when I was a child and have always enjoyed feeling the sun on my skin and water on all of me. It’s more comfortable and very freeing.
“At home I hate wearing clothes and in this weather it’s quite practical to get in and take your clothes off. Naturism and nudity is not illegal in this country. It’s very liberating, freeing and relaxing and has nothing to do with sex.
“We sometimes get asked, ‘will being nude make something happen below?’ It doesn’t and we never have that problem because there is nothing sexual in it. We don’t hide ourselves away because we are some sort of weird sect; we do it because we don’t want to upset people.
“When we meet up we strip away all the social things people look at such as the quality of your clothes and what watch or trainers you’re wearing. When you are nude no one knows how much money you earn, if you have yacht or if you live in bed sit. It’s a very equal and relaxed group.
“Naturists are comfortable in their own skins. There is no body shaming so it doesn’t matter if you are overweight, underweight, tall, short or have stretch marks or operation scars because no one bats an eye lid and everybody is accepted for who they are. I’m a normal human being with a little bit of a beer belly and I’ve aged like everyone does.
“I’m very open about being a naturist and some people think it’s weird which is fine as each to their own, or say they would not be brave enough to do it. I always say to people give it go and when they do they wonder why they never did it years ago.”
Brett, whose partner is also a member of the club, believes the naturist lifestyle is beneficial to people because its elderly members are in good health.
He said: “I think people are much happier as a result. It helps with taking the stress out of everyday life which is why we probably get a lot of people in pressurised or caring jobs.”
Among the club’s female members is 44-year-old Rachel Wieck who attends with her partner who introduced her to naturism. Together they organise Nudefest, the largest naked camping festival in the UK which is held annually in Somerset.
Recalling when she went publicly nude for the first time, Rachel, who lives near Exmouth, said: “We are lucky in East Devon to have a couple of naturist beaches. When I met my partner he asked me to go to one with him and said I could keep my clothes on if I wanted to.
“I didn’t find it daunting and thought what the hell, everyone else was naked and I was the odd one out so I went nude and took to it like a duck to water.
“There is a perception there is some sort of ‘display’ going on, but no one is interested in what the other person is or isn’t doing. I enjoy it, partly because it’s freedom but also the practical side. It is so much easier such as when you put sun cream on or when we go on cycling touring holidays and are limited for space we don’t have to bring many clothes.
“I’m completely open about being a naturist and I think it’s really important because it’s normal so I talk about it normally. We do the same things as everyone else, but just without clothes on.”
Rachel, an admin clerk, says naturism has taught her about body confidence.
She said: “We have all got a naked body so it’s no big deal. People battle against the perfection glossy magazines portray, but real people are just getting on with their lives and in my world it’s without clothes on.
“We have all got lumps, bumps and scars. Nobody is perfect. I have met naturist women who have had mastectomies and I think they’re really brave to be so confident. They might have gone through awful trauma and treatment and yet they are confident and happy enough in themselves to say this is me.”
