I made the choice for brother because I have an older brother that I am close with and thought this would help me connect to the story and my own character more.
I picked brother, solely because I wanted to tie all of my characters’ stories together, and it made sense to that specific character.
My original character before I switched ambition took lover. I remember vividly it was because upon reading lover’s initial text, I sat down for a solid minute literally forgetting to breathe.
I still think about that sentence sometimes and feel chills down my neck- In a good way.

God, this thread is making me want to make an alt just to replay Nemesis. clenches fist I can't do knifegate again.

I went with brother, because spouse or lover felt a bit too cliché, and losing a child felt like too much trauma.
I officially picked brother, but what I intended was my dog. I find it morbidly hilarious if I went through the Neath all to avenge my dog John-Wick style.

I was more interested in choosing a significant other over the family members since that kind of drama felt a bit more compelling to me at the time. I flipped a coin to decide between spouse and lover, and I definitely spent some time staring at the text after you pick lover since it hit me pretty hard.
The way I imagined my character was that they were a hollow shell of a person pretending to be okay as they pursued vengeance. It made the choice of returning their loved one to life or completing their vengeance a lot more interesting and difficult to make.
My brother is my best friend. One of the only family I give a damn about. I'd be awfully tempted to kill a lot of people to revenge him. It seemed an understandable choice.
i chose lover because i started playing with a character that i'd had for several years before getting into fallen london, who already had thwarted love as part of her backstory. for my character though, it's less "lover" and more "person i was in love with," as it was not actually reciprocated. i also used this as the reason why she was in New Newgate (as we all are at the start) - she was framed for the murder of her loved one whom she's trying to avenge.
Victory is a character I adapted from a thing I write on in my free time. In that, she temporarily loses her sister, but for FL I technically chose Daughter because I felt like it reflected their relationship a bit better than Brother. (I was also placing a somewhat unnecessary importance on gender, but you know how it is.)
Her Daughter Sister, Returned is actually my main account, 820 . (Please ignore the fact that Victory's loved one hasn't been returned yet, treachery of clocks and all that)
That's fascinating. I really should try writing up character concepts of my own.
I wanted to go with a romantic partner because it's a classic revenge trope that I love dearly. I picked lover instead of spouse because I wanted to play a little with how we define committed relationships, and how world-shattering love is not always ratified in the eyes of the law or culture, or even made explicit in interpersonal vows.
There's something about feeling eternity but never having the chance to swear it that just... gets me. As others have said, 'And now you'll never know' sort of says it all.
I went with lover because my character was definitely an only child and I didn't want them to have a spouse or child.
The range of responses here is fascinating. I mean in terms of the reasoning, though the graph is interesting.
I picked daughter. The Comtessa story hits hard with that in mind.
How did the Comtessa story end for you?
I made the choice of lover ages ago, at a time when I was considerably more ambivalent about the Nemesis ambition, which is one of the reasons I decided to ask. I don't remember the exact decision making process (I had to look up what I had picked); it may well have been random.

I'm late to this... I found it looking for the text from when you go to war with yourself in Parabola. What the text was (full text, not like on the wiki) if you had the bloodied cloak & not a Returned. Couldn't find the text, but found this. It's all interesting to see the reasoning.
I remember my reasoning for lover was that my character had come to the Neath young. So, spouse seemed a bit too far. My character, like me, only has one sibling & they play, so they came to the Neath as well. No kids, so, if I was seeking revenge, it had to be a lover. Plus, everything is very dramatic for the young & watching a lover die would be very traumatic & life-altering.
It's fitting that by the time we got our ambition ends, it had been so very very long & they don't remember us. Because by now, my character had grown up & lived in the Neath long enough to grow, mature, become a complete hedonistic psycho... If I had to pick today, I’d probably have done Vake or Heart’s Desire. Both fit her now better. The choice of kids though, am I right?
That's pretty cool reasoning. I probably feel the same way, but I hope to still grow into it.
And I'm hoping Evolution brings us some fun Nemesis tie-ins.
