Local Student Faizan Zaki Wins National Spelling Bee in Stunning Victory

In a thrilling finale that had the audience on the edge of their seats, 12-year-old Faizan Zaki from Springfield, Illinois, claimed the title of champion at the 97th Annual National Spelling Bee last night. Zaki outlasted 11 finalists in a grueling 18-round showdown, ultimately sealing his victory by correctly spelling 'psammophile'—a term referring to organisms that thrive in sandy soils.

The young spelling prodigy displayed remarkable composure throughout the competition, even when faced with obscure words like 'serrefine' (a small surgical clamp) and 'zwitterion' (a molecule with both positive and negative charges). His final competitor, 14-year-old Emily Carter from Texas, stumbled on 'chiaroscurist' (an artist who uses light and shadow contrasts), giving Zaki the opening he needed to clinch the win.

'I just kept focusing on the roots and language patterns,' Zaki said in his post-victory interview. 'My parents quizzed me every day, and my little brother pretended to be the pronouncer. This was a team effort!'

Zaki, who enjoys coding and playing chess in his free time, will take home a $50,000 cash prize, a commemorative trophy, and an invitation to the Scripps-commissioned documentary about this year’s Bee. When asked about his future plans, he grinned and said, 'Maybe I’ll study botany—after all, psammophile got me here!'

The event, held at the Gaylord National Resort in Maryland, was broadcast live to millions, reaffirming the Spelling Bee’s legacy as a showcase of young brilliance and determination.
