# FairLane Privacy Policy

FairLane is a Chrome extension that overlays open-recall warnings, dealer-fee estimates, and 5-year cost projections on used-car listings.

## 1. Information we collect

We do not collect, store, sell, or transmit any personal information. FairLane has no analytics, no advertising, no user accounts, no tracking pixels, and no telemetry.

## 2. Information stored on your device

Two kinds of data are stored locally in your browser:

**(a) Settings** (driver age bracket, state, annual mileage, gas-price assumption, feature toggles) are saved using Chrome's built-in `storage.sync` API. Google may sync these settings across your own Chrome devices when you are signed into Chrome. We do not have access to this data.

**(b) Cached NHTSA recall lookups** are saved locally in `storage.local` for up to 7 days to reduce load on the NHTSA API. These are keyed by year/make/model and contain only what NHTSA returned. They never leave your device.

## 3. Network requests

FairLane makes HTTPS requests directly from your browser to two free public APIs operated by the U.S. government:

- `https://vpic.nhtsa.dot.gov/api/` — decodes a VIN to year, make, model

- `https://api.nhtsa.gov/recalls/` — returns open safety recalls for that year/make/model

We do not log, intercept, mirror, or proxy these requests. They are made directly from your browser to NHTSA. Their privacy practices are governed by the [U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration](https://www.nhtsa.gov/privacy-policy).

VINs are vehicle identifiers; they are not personally identifying.

## 4. Where the extension runs

FairLane only injects content scripts on four sites: `cargurus.com`, `autotrader.com`, `cars.com`, and `carvana.com`. It does not have access to any other websites or to your browsing history.

## 5. Children

FairLane is not directed at children under 13 and does not knowingly collect any data from children.

## 6. Changes

If we ever change this policy, we will update the date at the top and post the change on the extension's Chrome Web Store listing.
