Participation
GP2 is an open access category, which means that the only requirements to participate are to have a GP2 car and a script-free avatar.
However, people who meet the following conditions are not permitted to take part in the competition:
- Primary drivers from GP1 category.
- Drivers who were GP2 champions or GP1 race winners in the previous season.
- GP1 champions whose last championship was obtained, at least, as many seasons ago as total championships they obtained. Example: a driver with two GP1 championships, must have obtained their last one three seasons ago to be allowed to participate. On top of that, their participation will be limited to 1/3 of the events of the season and they won't score points for the championship.
GP2 drivers are entitled to participate in a maximum of 3 GP1 events during the season as substitutes. This means that if a GP2 driver participates in a 4th event, they will not be allowed to continue participating in GP2 for the rest of the season. However, they will retain the points scored up to that point and they will still count towards the championship.
Primary drivers from GP1 who leave the category with 12 or less points scored, have the right to join the GP2 category if they meet the above requirements. However, they will not be entitled to the 3 GP1 races and any further participation in GP1 after their incorporation into GP2, will prevent them from continuing to participate in the category. Likewise, the points obtained during their participation in GP2 will count towards the championship.
Event rounds
GP2 events will consist of three rounds:
- Qualification: a qualification round will be run with a duration of 10 minutes in which the final result determines the starting grid of both races. If there are 15 or more drivers assisting to this round, qualification will be splitted in two sessions; Q1 with all the drivers, and Q2 with the fastest half of Q1. Example: for 15 or 16 drivers, the first 8 will qualify for Q2; for 17 or 18 drivers, the first 9 will qualily for Q2, etc.
- Sprint Race: a race in laps lasting approximately 8 minutes in which the drivers start according to the order of the qualifying round. Gates will be solid.
- Featured Race: a race in laps lasting approximately 12 minutes in which the drivers start in the reverse order of the qualifying round. Gates will be solid.
Note: a driver who does not arrive in time for the qualifying round can still compete in both races, but will always start from the back of the grid.
Points
Both races award the same points in the following order:
- 20 points
- 16 points
- 12 points
- 9 points
- 7 points
- 5 points
- 4 points
- 3 points
- 2 points
- 1 point
Additionally, obtaining pole in qualifying and obtaining the fastest lap in each race will award an additional point.
Podiums
The events will end with two podiums, one for each race, and their respective trophy ceremony.
Incident report
One of the purposes of GP2 is to teach new drivers how to drive and to introduce them into SL racing. Consequently, the intention of a race incident report, as well as its resolution, will be focused on helping these drivers to improve their driving level, not to punish or discredit them.
Therefore, when reporting a race incident, please note the following:
- Reports must be made privately and exclusively with the category coordinators.
- Public reports during or after the events on any official FVA channel are not permitted.
- An incident cannot be reported until the end of the podium ceremony, and reports issued later than the following Tuesday will not be accepted.
- Reports must be concise and preferably supported by graphic evidence. In the absence of such evidence, the official recording of the coordination will be used as reference for the report.
Schedule and tracks
The GP2 events will take place on the same weekends and on the same tracks as the GP1 events. The days and time to hold the events will be Saturdays at 12:00 PM SLT.
Goals
There are several goals we pretend to achieve with the organization of GP2 this season:
Bridge to GP1
GP2 will have a more direct connection with GP1 for the promotion of drivers. In addition to being a category in which new promises have the opportunity to show themselves to GP1 teams in search of drivers, it will also be a verification mechanism for the FVA authorities to identify more easily and safely those drivers who are prepared to move up a category and those who need more preparation before doing so.
Teaching the basics of SL racing
Many core concepts in SL racing will be taught to new drivers through this category, such as driving a racing car itself, understanding the racing lines, managing traffic, fighting safely against other cars, controlling emotions during a race, behaving in both victory and defeat, the operation of the traffic lights, the difference rounds that make up a racing event, etc.
Competing for goals
GP2 will offer a competitive, motivating and safe environment for serious drivers who pretend to obtain a seat in GP1, where they can commit to training and improving for goals such as podiums and victories.
And fun!
To keep people engaged in the competition, we propose an entertaining format of three rounds with different characteristics to create a friendly, fun and inclusive series for amateur drivers who want to have some fun driving.
