FC Tirsense Upsets Benfica in Historic Win

FC TIRSENSE STUNS BENFICA IN HISTORIC TAÇA DE PORTUGAL UPSET

Felgueiras, Portugal – March 15, 2025

In a match that will go down in Portuguese football folklore, third-division underdogs FC Tirsense pulled off a miraculous 2-1 victory over SL Benfica in the Taça de Portugal quarter-finals, sending the Estádio do Mar into raptures.

The historic win came courtesy of a dramatic 88th-minute winner from Tirsense’s captain, Miguel Sousa, who capitalized on a defensive error to slot past Benfica’s keeper. The Eagles had taken the lead early through Ángel Di María (yes, the 37-year-old was still playing!), but Tirsense fought back with a stunning free-kick from André Ribeiro before Sousa’s late heroics.

Benfica, fielding a strong side despite rotation, dominated possession but were repeatedly frustrated by Tirsense’s heroic defending and the inspired goalkeeping of Rui Silva, who made nine saves. The final whistle sparked pitch invasions as fans celebrated arguably the biggest upset in the club’s 102-year history.

Tirsense now advances to the semi-finals, where they could face Porto or Sporting. Manager Carlos Pinho called it 'a night of pure magic', while Benfica’s Roger Schmidt admitted his side 'underestimated the passion of a team with nothing to lose.'

For a club that last played in the Primeira Liga in 1994, this could be the start of a fairytale revival.
