F Is for Family is an American adult animated comedy drama streaming television series created by Bill Burr and Michael Price [1] for Netflix . The show is produced by Gaumont International Television , Show Productions and Vince Vaughn 's Wild West Television. Set between October 1973 and December 1974, the show follows a dysfunctional suburban Irish-American family, and is set in the fictional town of Rustvale, Pennsylvania . [1] The show premiered on December 18, 2015, to positive reviews. [2] The series ended on November 25, 2021 with a total of 44 episodes over five seasons.

The series was announced in October 2014 as part of a partnership between Netflix , Gaumont International Television , and Wild West Television. [25] The show is a "family comedy" based on the standup of Bill Burr . [26] Moreover, the show takes place in the 1970s, "a time when you could smack your kid, smoke inside, and bring a gun to the airport". [26] Burr voices the Murphy family patriarch, with Laura Dern as his wife, Justin Long as his eldest son, Debi Derryberry as his daughter Maureen, and Haley Reinhart as his young son. [27] [28] [26] The first season consists of six episodes, shown in a serial manner, written by Bill Burr and Michael Price . [29] Price is best known for his Emmy and Writers Guild award-winning work on The Simpsons . [29] The series is directed by Ben Marsaud (director of Counterfeit Cat & former storyboard artist on The Amazing World of Gumball ). Season 2 premiered May 30, 2017. [30] On June 28, 2017, the show was renewed for a third season. [31] On July 1, 2018, Burr confirmed season three. On November 30, 2018, the third season was released. On January 24, 2019, the show was renewed for a fourth season, which was released on June 12, 2020. [32] [33] On October 1, 2020, Netflix renewed the series for the fifth and final season which was released on November 25, 2021. [34] [35]

Many references are made to the city of Pittsburgh in the series, a city that Burr has visited frequently on his stand-up tours and shares a hatred of the Philadelphia Flyers with local sportscaster Mark Madden . [36] [37] This has included the characters flying over the Pittsburgh exurb of Steubenville, Ohio on their way to Cleveland and said jokes about Pittsburgh being made in Cleveland, the character of Bridget Fitzsimmons wanting to run away to Pittsburgh, and the airline Alaquippa Airlines being named after the Pittsburgh suburb of Aliquippa, Pennsylvania .

The series has received positive reviews. On Metacritic , it holds a score of 75 out of 100, based on 14 reviews, indicating "Generally favorable reviews." [38]

The first season was released to positive reviews. On Rotten Tomatoes , it holds a rating of 85% based on 20 reviews, with an average score of 6.5/10. The site's critical consensus reads, "While the humor relies on vulgarity, the strength of F Is for Family is its substantial heart." [39] Zack Handlen of The A.V. Club called it a “bitter, but deeply empathetic portrayal of suburban malaise and depression that also doubles as a very funny TV show”. [40] Emily St. James of Vox wrote that “ F Is for Family is quite a bit of fun” adding, “it isn't a bad way to kill a few hours”. [41]

The series received further critical acclaim with its second season, which holds a rating of 89% on Rotten Tomatoes with an average score of 7.1/10 based on 9 reviews. [42] In his review for IndieWire , Ben Travers praised the season for its dramatic shift in genre, writing “ F is for Family illustrates why it’s important to see series for what they are, rather than through the genre lens thrust upon them.” [43]

In a positive review of the third season, Merrill Barr of Forbes concluded: "Overall, the third season of F Is for Family continues to deliver on the things that make it such a worthy and unique addition to the Netflix landscape." [44]

The final season of F is for Family was released on Netflix on Nov. 25, and it’s what everyone is talking about. Fans of the adult animated television series were really excited to see the Murphys back in action for the fifth season. More specifically, people wanted to see if Kevin and Alice end up together in F is for Family season 5.
When we’re first introduced to Alice in season 4, we find out that she and Kevin have known each other since the seventh grade, but they didn’t keep in touch. From their first interaction, viewers could tell that a potential romance would blossom between the two.
They had so much in common but at the same time had opposite personalities. While Alice was well-mannered and compassionate, Kevin was quick-tempered and foul-mouthed. Yet, for some odd reason, they balanced each other out, and fans couldn’t help but root for them.
After going through a rough patch in season 4, Kevin and Alice do end up together by the end of the season 4 finale. But did the two lovebirds continue their lovefest in F is for Family season 5, or did their personalities clash too much that they broke up?
Spoilers for F is for Family season 5 ahead!
Sadly, the young couple does break up in the final season. Kevin and Alice start off the fifth season happily in love, but when Kevin finds out about Alice’s ex, he becomes insecure about their relationship.
Kevin becomes very clingy and possessive, and it drives Alice away. The final straw is when Kevin shows up at Alice’s house unannounced on Thanksgiving and punches her brother. Kevin thought Alice’s brother was her ex. Alice, upset and disappointed by Kevin’s actions, tells Kevin to leave and that she never wants to see him again.
Every relationship has its ups and downs, and in the fifth season, Kevin and Alice experience another lovers’ quarrel. However, we get to see the young lovebirds back together in the series finale.
After Alice sees Kevin performing at Sue’s baby class, she realizes that Kevin learned his lesson and has changed his ways. While sitting in Alice’s bedroom, Kevin apologizes for his actions and they rekindle their romance. They even attempt to sleep together for the first time but are caught by Alice’s dad.
We’re so happy that Kevin and Alice were able to repair their relationship. They were such a cute pairing, and we wanted to see this couple make it to the end.
