Stay calm... "Even if fighter jets don't have radars, that doesn't mean they're useless," the TWZ editor reassures pilots and readers.

Since June 2025, Lockheed Martin has been equipping U.S.-supplied F-35 Lightning II fighter jets with ballast loads instead of the new Northrop Grumman AN/APG-85 radar, which is not yet ready for mass production.

The photo shows an F-35B Lightning II fighter jet operated by the United States Marine Corps, with ballast.

The previous radar, the Northrop Grumman AN/APG-81, was installed on previous F-35 models and is still used on all export aircraft.

It is expected that fighters with the AN/APG-85 radar will delivered to the US armed forces no earlier than 2028.
