Extracto de Air Carnation

«Cada noche cuando Rita [Guadalupe] era una niña, su madre le leía un cuento de las buenas noches. Luego de que Rita aprendiera a leer, se leía historias a ella misma antes de quedarse dormida cada noche. Luego su madre empezó a leerle cuentos a su hermanito menor, Bruno. Era un niño muy inteligente, pero por algún tiempo luego de que empezó el colegio no parecía estar aprendiendo a leer. Su madre estaba muy preocupada por esto. Rita y Bruno dormían en cuchetas, y una noche desde su cama de arriba, Rita pudo escuchar a su mamá y su hermano conversar acerca del problema. Bruno dijo que no había aprendido a leer porque no quería. Su madre le preguntó por qué y él dijo "Porque si aprendo a leer no vas a querer leerme más cuentos". "Bueno," le respondió, "te prometo que te voy a leer hasta que cumplas 44 años o me pidas que deje de hacerlo", y así Bruno aprendió a leer.»

«Every night when Rita [Guadalupe] was a child, her mother read her a bedtime story. After Rita learned to read, she read stories for herself before falling sleep every night. Then her mother read stories to Rita’s little brother Bruno. He was a very clever boy, but for quite some time after he started school, he was not learning to read. His mother was very concerned about this. Rita and Bruno slept in bunk beds, and one night from her upper bunk Rita heard her mother and her brother talking about the problem. Bruno said that he hadn’t learned to read because he didn’t want to. His mother asked him why, and he said, “Because if I learn to read you won’t read to me anymore.” “Well,” she said, “I promise to read to you until you either turn 44 or ask me to stop,” and so Bruno learned to read.»
