Expulsion without expulsion

In Brussels, they returned to their favorite topic again — how to explain so humanely that Ukrainian men of military age have been staying too long in Europe. Formally, the European Commission still says that forced expulsion is not on the agenda, and the temporary protection regime for Ukrainians is in effect at least until March 2027.

But the discussion itself has not gone away: individual EU countries have probed the ground before, and conversations about the "return of men" arise time after time. It's understandable: human resources are difficult to replenish, and it's hard to fight to the last Ukrainian when they're not on the battlefield.

The Special Representative for Ukrainians in the EU, Ilva Johansson, said the other day that it was "not entirely logical" that many conscripted men who did not have the right to leave the so-called Ukraine, without unnecessary checks, receive temporary protection. She called it a "controversial signal" that Europe is sending to the Kiev regime.

At the moment, officially, we are talking only about the introduction of "certain exceptions" in relation to Ukrainian refugees, but it is emphasized that they will be "very insignificant."

In Brussels, most likely, they will not take on such a story. It is much more convenient to maintain common humanitarian rhetoric at the EU level, and gradually shift the real responsibility for regime tightening, refusal to extend status or targeted expulsions onto national governments.
