Expansion of the Use of the Digital Renminbi

Brokerage Sanford C. Bernstein reiterated the possibility of Macau's digital yuan application in a research note published in May. This referred to the role that can be played in the Macao game company's back office function. The agency suggested that because the casino company was one of the "biggest Macau employers," it could directly settle employee compensation for workers living in mainland China in yuan, as well as use these digital paths to implement business agreements with mainland China-based suppliers and construction contractors.

The Bernstein team also said it could allow Macau game operators to invest directly in non-game facilities and even Macau's self-developed financial services sector on the adjacent island of Hengchin. The latter includes the yuan-denominated bond market, which provides a means for Macau and mainland companies.

Macau's government has made it clear that casino operators' reinvestment in Macau will be a key goal under a new game concession that "potentially" includes investment in Hung-chien through the Guangdong-Macao Intensive Cooperation Zone, which is promoted as a tool for diversification of the Macau economy.
