Inside the entrance to the Cow Palace a young woman stands next to a pillar, bored.
A man approaches and holds up a camera. "Mind?" he asks.
She smiles brightly, half turns and looks back at him, striking a pose. She's wearing a see-through top of white mesh, thigh-high hose and a G-string. Little is left to the imagination.
The man starts shooting pictures. The flash is like chum to a shark. There's a rush of other men with cameras. Soon it's like a soft-core porno shoot, with a dozen men jockeying for position.
Her boyfriend approaches, drinks in hand. He stands to the side and offers encouragement. "Show it, baby," he says.
The woman smiles through it all. She arches her back and leans into the pillar. It's a classic men's magazine pose, and the guys are going wild. One has a camera mounted at the end of a 3-foot-long stick. So he can put the camera on the floor, between her legs, and shoot up.
This was the scene most of the night on Saturday, as 12,000 to 13,000 exhibitionists and voyeurs made their annual pilgrimage to the Exotic Erotic Ball, just south of San Francisco in Daly City.
It's billed as a celebration of all things sexual, but mainly the ball boils down to two things: showing it if you got it, and looking at those who got it.
That would explain why it was impossible to find any woman by herself. Most went with a husband or boyfriend (or, in some cases, both). Some women went together. But none went alone.
Which was definitely not the case for men. The ball is a voyeur's dream. Swarms of single men, some in costume but most in street clothes, prowled the hallways with cameras looking for naked women to photograph.
"I go every year," said one man from San Jose, who asked that his name not be used. "Can you believe this? It's like I died and went to heaven."
This was the 25th Exotic Erotic Ball and probably the biggest ever. People paid $75 for general admission and $185 for VIP tickets. (At the door, it was $85 and $200, respectively.) It included an expo for the first time and panel discussions on topics involving freedom of expression and the First Amendment. A couple of dozen people sat in folding chairs to listen to the speakers. Others couldn't be bothered, preferring to check out the seminaked Twister game over at an erotic clothing booth.
The expo went on in the afternoon, and the ball started at 8 p.m. It rained in the afternoon, so it was cold in the evening as the line snaked around the parking lot. Topless women shivered, as did men wearing skimpy ladies' undergarments.
"You're naked, you're outside, it's all good," said one woman to her friend.
People crowded the dance floor, while hundreds more moved like a slow stream around the outer corridor and into the expo area. A man walked through the crowd wearing jeans and a T-shirt that said "Kiss Normal Goodbye."
Everywhere you looked, women held impromptu photo shoots. They didn't have to be beautiful, by magazine standards. Just female and willing to show breasts, butts or more. Men would approach a woman, ask for a photo and pose with her while his buddies took the shot.
At the entrance to the expo, a man stood in the corner, holding his cape open at his side to hide the sight of a woman huddled in the corner in front of him. That worked until a costumed guy on stilts walked up and looked down. "Dude, get out of here," the man yelled at the one on stilts.
In the stadium seats, high up, couples kissed, made out and had sex.
In the hallways, and on the main floor, the smell of reefer came and went.
On the stage, 2 Live Crew, Everclear and Glamnation played. There were sexual contests, performances (including the Porcelain Twinz, who put on a semi-incestuous act), various strippers, a fashion show and guest appearances by porn stars.
But the stage acts were secondary to the performances among the partiers. The ball isn't just an exercise in exhibitionism. It's a mecca for sensualists and the erotic minded. San Francisco was heavily represented, but people came from all over.
Deborah and Claude came from Fresno. They didn't want their last names used, either. (Hardly anyone did.) They came dressed as a doctor and nurse, and neither was showing much.
"This is just one of those things we wanted to check out once in our lives," Deborah said.
"I don't think we'd come back," Claude said. "It's like something to check off on your list of things to do before you die. But I don't see any point in coming back."
It was a fun crowd, and there were few problems. Security grabbed a couple of guys for fighting. And some of the guys got pushy and grabby with some of the women.
Down on the main floor, two women wearing very little walked across the floor. A man stepped in front of one woman and tried to kiss her. She intercepted him deftly, knocked him sideways and kept walking and talking, as if nothing had happened.
Later, a dedicated exhibitionist wandered the floor offering a pose to anyone with a camera. She was short, maybe in her 40s, with glasses and a curvy figure. Men would line up to take pictures as she posed, lifted her skirt and bent over. A man tried to grab her and she punched him. Told him to get away, then went back to posing.
One woman came to the ball with co-workers from Los Angeles. They all planned to go to a sex club afterward. The woman, in her 20s, said she loved the openness of the ball, how people expressed their sexuality without shame or fear. It was true: People seemed almost indifferent to their nudity and the raw sexuality around them.
"You could never do this in L.A." she said as her boss and his girlfriend got busy in a chair nearby. "This is a totally different atmosphere."
That attitude manifested itself throughout the ball. One man was there most of the day and evening. He wore only tennis shoes and a bandanna, with white and black face paint, like a Kiss band member. He would go from booth to booth, or out to the dance floor, touching himself while watching other people, mostly women.
He wasn't the only naked wanderer. Another man wore a Jack in the Box head over his head, along with pants and a shirt. But his fly was open, and he was fully exposed. Another man walked around completely naked, his clothes in a plastic bag over his shoulder.
The type and variety of outfits boggled the mind. Some wore traditional Halloween costumes, but most wore skimpy this and that, all designed to titillate. Early in the day, a good-looking young couple showed up as bride and groom. Which is to say she wore a veil and a smile. He wore a black bow tie and G-string.
They walked arm in arm around the expo, stopping to peer into a curtained- off area where old-school porn movies played on the wall. "Hmm, needs a shave, " the woman commented.
"No, it's not for real," the woman said when I asked if they'd just been married or were about to be. "Just a fun costume."
Through it all, some people just stood and watched the naked flow go by.
Michael Hoskins , a firefighter from Oakland, went with his brother-in-law. They were in doctor and convict costumes and chatted as naked women and men mingled nearby.
"We wanted our wives to come with us, but they didn't want to," Hoskins said. "They said to go on and go and have a good time -- and we sure are."
