Exebitionism
Medically Reviewed by Dan Brennan, MD on June 28, 2021
Exhibitionism is getting sexual gratification from showing one’s genitals or private areas to others. People who participate in exhibitionism enjoy being seen or fantasize about being seen by others in a sexual manner .
You might have urges to be seen nude or performing a particular act. If you thrive on attention, you might want to explore consensual (mutually agreeable) exhibitionism as a way to boost your self - esteem .
If you explore exhibitionism, it’s very important that it be consensual. That means anyone you display yourself to in any way is OK with it. In many situations, especially in public, sex and nudity is illegal. This behavior is called indecent exposure or flashing. People who engage in non-consensual exhibitionism face legal action such as a fine or imprisonment.
Exhibitionism could include consensually sharing nude photos with someone or engaging in public sex at a swingers club. Make sure that other people involved are also having a pleasurable experience, and that they have agreed to what is going to happen ahead of time.
Voyeurism means a person is turned on by seeing others nude or having sex. Like with exhibitionism, it is very important to make sure that all parties are involved in the experience consensually.
Nudism, or naturalism, is a lifestyle in which people do not wear clothing at all. Often, nudists stay together in groups. Unlike exhibitionism, nudism is not explicitly sexual in nature.
People who practice nudism may swim, hike, sunbathe, and do other activities completely naked. Exhibitionists, on the other hand, are unlikely to spend all their time nude.
To explore exhibitionism, start by thinking about your sexual fantasies. Consider whether they are realistic and safe.
If you want to act them out, talk to your partner about what you’re interested in trying. Make sure that you set specific boundaries and create a safe word to indicate if things go too far. Explicitly tell them what you would enjoy.
Start slow. In the privacy of your bedroom, you can experiment with consensual exhibitionist fantasies. Allow for trial and error, and don’t set your expectations too high. Try to relax and explore as a pleasurable bonding experience.
There are clubs where people consensually agree to see nudity and sex acts. Some beaches and bath houses also allow nudity. However, keep in mind that some places that allow consensual nudity are not sexual in nature. Always remember to be respectful of the desires of the other people involved in your exploration.
It’s extremely important to make sure you don’t break the law and that everyone involved has agreed to the experience.
In many situations, exhibitionism is an illegal sex crime. Make sure that behavior is allowed and that everyone involved has agreed to the activity.
Consensual exhibitionism takes self awareness and planning. Never expose yourself to someone who does not want to participate. This can be disturbing to people and can result in legal action. In particular, make sure that the people who will see you are of legal age.
Some research points to a connection between sexting (sending sexual images or messages to someone via text message) and depression and anxiety . Sexting may also be problematic if it leads to less interest in real-life interactions.
Make sure that if you are sending nude images of yourself to someone that you do so in a secure way. Only send nude photos to people you trust.

exhibitionism , derivation of sexual gratification through compulsive display of one’s genitals. Like voyeurism ( q.v. ), sexual display is almost universal as a prelude to sexual activity in animals, including humans; it is regarded as deviant behaviour when it takes place outside the context of intimate sexual relations. Exhibitionists are usually not dangerous, although the experience is frequently perceived by the victim as threatening; violence or sexual assault seldom follows the display.
The exhibitionist, almost always male, may obtain gratification from the reaction of disgust or fear on the part of his victim, but this reaction is not always necessary to his excitement. Previously normal individuals sometimes turn to exhibitionism following severe mental trauma or personal loss. The chronic exhibitionist, however, is likely to have a serious personality disorder .
Exhibitionism is the most common form of sexual deviation to come into conflict with the law in Western society. Nearly all of those arrested for exhibitionism are men; the disorder, if it exists at all in women, is seldom evident. Some experts suggest that female exhibitionism is not uncommon, but is not identified as deviant behaviour because there are socially acceptable ways for women to display their bodies.

Most exhibitionists do not have exhibitionist disorder.
Doctors diagnose exhibitionist disorder when people feel greatly distressed or become less able to function well because of their behavior, or they have acted on their urges with a person who does not consent.
Treatment, which usually begins after exhibitionists are arrested, includes psychotherapy, support groups, and certain antidepressants.
Exhibitionism is a form of paraphilia.
Exhibitionists (usually males) expose their genitals, usually to unsuspecting strangers, and become sexually excited when doing so. They may be aware of their need to surprise, shock, or impress the unwilling observer. The victim is almost always a woman or a child of either sex. Actual sexual contact is almost never sought, so exhibitionists rarely commit rape.
Exhibitionism usually starts during adolescence. Most exhibitionists are married, but the marriage is often troubled.
About 30% of male sex offenders who are arrested are exhibitionists. They tend to persist in their behavior. About 20 to 50% are re-arrested.
Exposure of genitals to unsuspecting strangers for sexual excitement is rare among women. Women have other venues to expose themselves: dressing provocatively (which is increasingly accepted as normal) and appearing in various media and entertainment venues. Participation in these venues of itself does not constitute a mental health disorder.
For some people, exhibitionism is expressed as a strong desire to have other people watch their sexual acts. Such people want to be seen by a consenting audience, rather than to surprise people. People with this form of exhibitionism may make pornographic films or become adult entertainers. They are rarely troubled by their desire and thus may not have a mental health disorder.
Most people with exhibitionistic tendencies do not have a disorder.
A doctor's evaluation, based on specific criteria
Doctors diagnose exhibitionistic disorder when
People have been repeatedly and intensely aroused by exposing their genitals or being observed by other people during sexual activity, and the arousal has been expressed in fantasies, intense urges, or behaviors.
As a result, people feel greatly distressed or become less able to function well (at work, in their family, or in interactions with friends), or they have acted on their urges with a person who does not consent.
They have had the condition for 6 months or more.
Psychotherapy, support groups, and certain antidepressants
If SSRIs are ineffective, drugs that alter the sex drive and reduce testosterone levels may be used. These drugs include leuprolide and medroxyprogesterone acetate. People must give their informed consent to the use of these drugs, and doctors periodically do blood tests to monitor the drug’s effects on liver function, as well as other tests (including bone density tests and blood tests to measure testosterone levels.
