At the 2020 Census, the city's population was 106,447. For thousands of years the Atfalati people of the Kalapuya lived in the Tualatin Valley near the later site of Hillsboro. The environment, moderated by the Pacific Ocean, helped make the region ideal for fishing, searching, food event, and farming. Settlers established a community here in 1842, later called after David Hill, an Oregon politician.

A railroad reached the location in the early 1870s and an interurban electrical railway about four decades later on. These railways, in addition to highways, assisted the slow growth of the city to about 2,000 individuals by 1910 and about 5,000 by 1950, before the arrival of state-of-the-art companies in the 1980s.

In addition to high-tech market, sectors essential to Hillsboro's economy are health care, retail sales, and agriculture, including grapes and wineries. The city runs more than twenty parks and the mixed-use Hillsboro Arena, and 10 sites in the city are noted on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP).
