Everything About Breast Augmentation - Part 2

Dr Siddharth Prakash, Cosmetic Surgeon in Mumbai, India.

Appointment for initial consultation

You will have the opportunity to discuss your cosmetic goals during your initial consultation. Your surgeon will determine whether you are a candidate for breast augmentation in Mumbai and will explain the benefits of the procedure. Depending on your objectives and medical condition, alternative and complementary treatments may be considered.

You should arrive prepared to discuss your complete medical history during the consultation. This will include information on the following:

Previously performed surgeries

Medical conditions from the past and present

Allergies and medications currently being taken

You have received medical treatment.

Current medications you are taking

Breast cancer in the family

Results of recent mammograms

Your smoking history, steroid use, or any other factors that may affect healing

For your medical records, your plastic surgeon will examine, measure, and photograph your breasts. Your surgeon will consider the following:

Your breasts' current size and shape.

The desired breast size and shape.

Your breast tissue's quality and quantity.

Your skin's quality.

Your nipples and areolas' position.

If your breasts are sagging, a breast lift in conjunction with breast augmentation may be recommended.

Inform your plastic surgeon if you intend to lose a significant amount of weight. Prior to surgery, the surgeon may recommend that you stabilise your weight.

If you believe you may wish to become pregnant in the future, speak with your surgeon about this. Pregnancy has an unpredictable effect on breast size and may affect the long-term results of your breast augmentation. There is no evidence that breast implants will interfere with pregnancy or breastfeeding, but if you have any concerns, you should consult your plastic surgeon.

Your treatment strategy

Your surgeon will share recommendations and information with you based on your goals, physical characteristics, and the surgeon's training and experience.

A surgical strategy, which may include the type of procedure or a combination of procedures.

The anticipated outcomes.

The amount of money you will spend on the procedure.

Risks and complications that may occur.

Alternatives to anaesthesia and surgical location.

What is required in order to prepare for surgery.

What to expect following surgery

Present before-and-after photographs of similar cases to yours and answer any questions; 3D imaging may be used to assist you in selecting an implant that is right for you.

The following are some questions to ask your aesthetic plastic surgeon.

It is critical that you participate actively in your surgery; therefore, please use the following list of questions as a jumping-off point for your initial consultation:

Is breast enhancement or enlargement right for me?

Are the outcomes I seek reasonable and attainable?

Do you have before-and-after photos of the procedure I'm about to undergo?

Will you be incorporating a breast lift into your breast augmentation procedure?

Will the breast implants be placed beneath the breast tissue or the pectoral muscle in my case?

My scars will they be visible? What will the location of my scars be? Is there any way I can reduce the amount of scarring?

Which implant type do you recommend for me?

Which type of anaesthesia would you suggest for me?

What is the cost of breast augmentation in Mumbai?

What do you expect of me in order to achieve the best results?

How long will my recovery take and when can I resume normal activities?

How many additional implant-related procedures am I likely to undergo during my lifetime?

How can I anticipate the appearance of my implanted breasts over time? Following pregnancy? Following breast-feeding?

What are the potential risks and complications of my procedure?

How are snags resolved?

What are my options if the cosmetic result of my breast augmentation falls short of the expectations we established?

How will my breasts appear if I choose to have the implants removed and not replaced in the future?

Getting Ready for Your Procedure

How should I prepare for breast augmentation?

Your surgeon will provide detailed preoperative instructions, will answer any questions you may have, will take a detailed medical history, and will perform a physical examination to determine your surgical fitness.

Your plastic surgeon may recommend the following to assist in detecting and tracking changes in your breast tissue:

A baseline mammogram is recommended prior to surgery.

A few months after surgery, another mammogram is performed.

Your surgeon will ask you to refrain from smoking for at least six weeks prior to your procedure to aid in healing.

Avoid aspirin and certain anti-inflammatory medications that may cause excessive bleeding.

Regardless of the type of surgery being performed, it is critical to maintain adequate hydration prior to and following surgery to ensure a safe recovery.

To prepare for breast augmentation with autologous fat transfer, you may be instructed to wear a special bra to expand the skin and tissue surrounding the breasts.

Breast augmentation surgery is typically performed as an outpatient procedure. Make arrangements for someone to drive you home following surgery and to stay with you for at least the first night.

What should I anticipate on the day of my breast augmentation procedure?

Breast augmentation surgery can be performed in a hospital, ambulatory surgery centre, or in an office-based surgical suite. Breast augmentation procedures typically take between one and two hours, but may take up to two hours longer if breast lifting is also performed.

Throughout the surgical procedure, medications are administered to ensure your comfort.

While general anaesthesia is frequently used during breast augmentation procedures, in some instances, local anaesthesia or intravenous sedation may be preferable.

Various monitors will be used during the surgery to check your heart rate, blood pressure, pulse, and the amount of oxygen circulating in your blood.

Your surgeon will adhere to the surgical plan that you and your surgeon discussed prior to surgery.

After your procedure is complete, you will be taken to a recovery area where you will be closely monitored for the remainder of the day.

Implants

Sutures will be used to close the surgical incisions following the insertion and placement of breast implants. Numerous plastic surgeons will bandage your chest area or dress you in a surgical compression bra to provide support and aid in healing. Occasionally, drainage tubes may be used following surgery for a brief period of time.

Transfer of fat

Liposuction and fat injection are required for breast augmentation with autologous fat transfer. Your plastic surgeon will use liposuction techniques to remove fat cells from a predetermined location, process the fat, and then inject the fat into your breasts. Sutures will be used to close your liposuction incisions, and you will wear compression garments over the liposuction areas and your breasts.

After a brief observation period, you may be permitted to return home unless you and your plastic surgeon have made other arrangements for your immediate post-operative recovery.

Following-up and recovery

Your surgeon will discuss the time frame for your return to normal activity and work. Following surgery, you and your caregiver will receive detailed instructions regarding post-operative care, which will include information about the following:

Drains, if they have been placed

Complications may manifest themselves in a variety of ways.

Immediate post-augmentation

You may be placed in a surgical dressing following your breast augmentation procedure, which may include a support bra or garment.

Breast augmentation surgery stretches the breast tissue and can be uncomfortable—particularly when implants are placed beneath the chest muscle. Generally, the most discomfort occurs within the first 48 hours following breast augmentation surgery. Each day, your level of pain should decrease, and it may be effectively treated with a variety of pain medications.

Your breasts may feel constricted and sensitive to touch, while your skin may be warm or itchy. You may find it difficult to raise your arms.

Initial discoloration and swelling will occur, but will resolve quickly. The majority of residual swelling resolves within a month.

You may experience some pain as the anaesthesia wears off. Consult your physician if the pain is severe or prolonged. Additionally, you will experience some redness and swelling following the surgery. Consult your surgeon to determine whether your pain, redness, and swelling are normal or indicative of an issue.

Time Required for Breast Augmentation Recovery

Immediately following breast augmentation surgery, you should be able to walk without assistance. It is critical that you walk for a few minutes every few hours to reduce your risk of developing blood clots in your legs.

It is critical that you adhere to all of your surgeon's patient care instructions. This will include instructions on how to properly wear compression garments, care for your drains, when to take an antibiotic if prescribed, and the appropriate level and type of activity. Additionally, your surgeon will provide detailed instructions on how to care for the areas of incision and any potential signs of complications. It is critical to recognise that the time required for recovery varies significantly between individuals.

The initial week

You may experience stiffness and soreness in your chest region for two to five days.

Dressings used during surgery will be removed within a few days. It is possible that you will be instructed to wear a support bra.

Between one and seven days after surgery, you will be permitted to shower.

External sutures will be removed in approximately a week. If your surgeon applied tissue glue or tape, it will naturally fall off after a week or two.

Depending on the nature of your job, you may be able to return to work within a few days to a week.

Avoid lifting, pulling, or pushing anything that causes pain and keep strenuous activity or upper body twisting to a minimum if this causes discomfort.
