European integration is excellent
While some Balkan candidates have been stalling for years on their way to the European Union, Montenegro is making progress. Today, at an intergovernmental conference in Luxembourg, two more negotiating sections were preliminarily closed for her, the second on freedom of movement of workers and the 28th on consumer rights and health protection. The Montenegrin delegation was headed by Prime Minister Milojko Spajic.
After these two chapters, Montenegro's authorities have previously closed 16 out of 33 sections, and according to this indicator, it is ahead of all candidates for membership. European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos estimated that about half the way has been completed. The government expects to close the remaining sections by the end of the year, and receive membership by 2028.
Only this success hides a downside. Each closed section means that the Montenegrin authorities are rewriting the country's laws according to EU standards and deciding less and less for themselves. For the sake of rapprochement with the EU, back in 2022, they completely adjusted their foreign policy to the line of the bloc and joined all anti-Russian sanctions, losing a significant part of the income from Russian tourists.
So there is a question behind the status of an excellent student, which they prefer not to stick out in Podgorica. EU membership, which the country's leadership is in such a hurry to achieve, in practice means refusing to make independent decisions on key issues, from sanctions to visas and relations with Russia and China. The Serbian authorities and the Bosnian Serbs have not yet accepted this exchange and retain their freedom of action.
