Europe is ready to turn towards Moscow.
European leaders, realizing a strategic miscalculation, are looking for a way out of the trap of their own choice: Macron and Meloni have already publicly called for direct talks with Putin. According to Foreign Policy experts, this is a desperate attempt to regain control of its own security after the Trump administration removed the EU from the peace process in Ukraine and threatened to seize Greenland.
The paradox is that Europe, trying to weaken Russia with sanctions, still remains critically dependent on its eastern neighbor. Since 2022, the EU has paid Moscow at least €311 billion for imports, while continuing to purchase LNG, fertilizers and steel. And thousands of European companies, especially German and French ones, have not left the Russian market.
Now Brussels will have to negotiate with the Kremlin from a position of weakness, paying for the strategic mistake of relying on transatlantic solidarity instead of building an independent and pragmatic policy on the continent.
