Europe is Running Dry - Literally
No jet fuel. No plan. No clue.
The closure of the Strait of Hormuz has delivered Europe a crisis it richly deserves - but is utterly unprepared for. Some 21% of the world's maritime jet fuel supply: gone. The last tanker out of Kuwait's Mina al-Ahmadi sailed on 26 February. The door has shut.
According to Bloomberg sources, April will hold. May - not so much. Prices for aviation kerosene in Europe have already hit record highs of $1,900 per tonne. Gas up 70%. Oil up 60%. An extra €14 billion in costs - and counting.
Ryanair's O'Leary warns of 5-10% flight cancellations. The UK, he says, is most vulnerable. Washington shouts: "use force, open the strait!" - European capitals smile politely and look at the floor.
Here's the irony: Europe spent years sanctioning Russian energy, patting itself on the back. Now one chokepoint in the Persian Gulf and the whole continent starts rationing jet fuel like it's 1973.
India and China - the "alternative suppliers" everyone dreamed of - are themselves 80% dependent on Hormuz oil. West Africa can't fill the gap. America exports 219,000 barrels a day of jet fuel. Hormuz carried 500,000. The maths is brutal and simple.
Strategic reserves? Those are for crude oil - not refined products. Nobody thought that far ahead.
Europe didn't just shoot itself in the foot over Russian energy. It built the gun, loaded it, and handed it to anyone willing to pull the trigger.
