A report however is different from an essay in a way that the evidence given in a report is not merely discussions of various thoughts but a presentation of facts and information. The audience of a report is very specific, for example, one organization or the place your work at asks you to write a report.
Polishing your essay and report writing skills can set you apart from the whole class in the academic world. It also helps the essay writer to pursue a successful career by fostering your abilities to explain and refine your ideas in the best way possible.
The importance of a thesis statement in writing cannot be emphasized enough! A thesis statement is a sentence that gives the main ideas of the paper and helps control the ideas within the essay/report. Your thesis statement should be concrete and concisely set up so that it includes every claim you will be discussing in your body paragraphs. For example, “higher education should not be free to all” is a bad thesis statement. Written otherwise it could be, “Free access to US state funding for HE cannot necessarily benefit everyone because it constitutes financial strains on the national budget, deteriorates the quality of education, and is parsimonious and unfair to the taxpayers who fund higher education.”
Both essay writing and report writing require a few similar skills like the perfect coherent paragraphs. In each type of writing the paragraphs should include one central idea per paragraph, they should move the argument forward and guide the reader through the thought process. The A1 skill that can change your essay writing game is learning how a paragraph is structured.
A paragraph is structured by starting it with a topic sentence and making a claim in that topic sentence. It is then followed by a premise which tells the reader “Why you said what you said ''. By giving evidence for that premise and evaluating it using your understanding of the evidence you then conclude the paragraph. To give a consistent flow to your writing and keep the reader connected throughout you transition the paragraph using a link.
The format of almost every essay follows the introduction, body, and conclusion structure whereas a report is a little different. A report starts with a memorandum followed by a title page, an abstract or the executive summary, a table of content, then the essay type format of introduction, body, and conclusion, recommendations are given, and finally, the report ends with references and appendices. The last two parts of a report are not required by all types of reports it depends on who you are writing for.
The skills that come in handy while structuring your writing into the proper format is understanding the tone of your writing and carrying out effective research to collect relevant evidence. Focusing on the language is important, is the tone argumentative or forceful? Is it creative or logical? Getting an upgrade on your research skills using databases specific parameters can help you accomplish hours of tasks in minutes.
To write the most convincing arguments don’t forget the three precious words of Aristotle, “Ethos”, “Pathos” and “Logos”. Ethos shows the credibility of your argument, Pathos is the emotional support in your argument and Lagos is the logical support made by using statistics and evidence. Your argument requires both logos and pathos to balance healthily. Just have facts, and your article seems to be robotic and dull. And if you only have an emotional appeal, the reader will not be satisfied with your argument.
