Essaouira Book Essaouira Hotels Online! For a break from the heat and intensity of Marrakech we recommend a trip to the coastal town of Essaouira. Essaouira Tips This laid back town by the sea is a great place to spend a few days or a week. There's not a lot to do nor places to visit so just unwind and absorb the mellow scene. Things to Do: The main attraction here is the wonderful beach. It's long, wide and crowded in the summer. You can get away from the masses by walking south past the stream, but remember when the tide comes in it becomes impassible. Bring lots of drinks if you're going to the beach for a few hours. Shopping: Essaouira is renown for its Thuya wood products. You can visit the workshops and find a great selection of bowls, boxes, knick-knacks and furniture. You can even custom order items. Sights: The port is very colorful with a lot going on any time of day. It's fun to watch the catch unloading. The nearby Portuguese Fort has a nice view of the port, the sea and the town. The medina is very clean and small enough to enjoy shopping. Food: You must eat seafood in Essaouira. Some of the best, and certainly the freshest in Morocco. The tiny shrimp are sweet and tasty. The John Dory, calamari, and other seafood are a real treat. Highly recommended is Chez Sam's for a unique sorta French atmosphere and great food. Accommodation: There are just a few hotels in Essaouira and the range is not extensive as in other places. The Hotel Tafoukt where we stayed has a great view of the beach, but is right on the busy street so it's noisy day and night. It was also a bit stuffy and smelly. The place is beautifully restored, and the staff is very friendly. It's also the only place to cash a traveler's check or change money when the banks are closed. If you really dig Essaouira, ask around for some inexpensive apartments to rent.
Kif in the Rif: Truths about Hashish in Morocco

What a whirlwind of a town. And by whirlwind I mostly just mean wind because that place is windy as! But my title divides my Essaouira experience into three levels. I would totally live in Essaouira. Like I said, Essaouira was cool. One with the hashish for when you want to feel ahhh and other with marijuana for when you really want to fly. I learned a lot during those 5 days. I spent a lot of time alone. Working, but also alone without distractions. I learned that:. I met really lovely people there. I sat facing outside so I could watch the people and the son of the owner, Yeshael, was always really nice to me. He looked about 15 but told me he was a student studying English and always seemed really shy but excited to talk to me. At some point, he did ask me for my phone number but I found it endearing rather than creepy. There was the Berber man who showed me how to wrap a shesh the Tuareg turban, the photos of which shall never be revealed! Oh my gad, the hostel of nightmares. Okay, so I did bring this upon myself. The hostel was cleaned not clean— a cleaner came daily so communal areas were mopped and bathrooms done, but every time I got into bed I had a sneeze attack. The blankets were never changed or washed between clients. There would be drumming downstairs all effing night, sometimes until 2am. Off-beat drumming that prevented me from sleeping at a decent hour. There was also the guy whose wretching woke me up in the middle of the night. I could hear every wretch and every drop of his dinner landing in the toilet and in between feeling sorry for him I thought I would vomit from listening to it. Should I mention the showers? Yeah, I will. I get in the shower, lather up, and then the water cuts out. I arrived at my Airbnb in Marrakech and you have no idea how happy I was for a proper shower. After a fleet of cleaned not clean hostels…I have never been so happy to be sleeping in someone else's bed. Airbnb travel ttot. I decided to Google it as all Millennials do and it turns out this was not a uncommon occurrence. Now that I know, I will certainly be more respectful of that. Essaouira is cold! I was sleeping in two sweaters and I even had to buy a wool coat that makes me look like a super tourist. So many Canadians! I met at least 10 Canadians at the hostel in Essaouira. I would have expected lots of Brits but I think the lack of alcohol makes Morocco a less appealing destination! The Canadians were on backpacking trips, taking a holiday from working in another city in Europe, or just came because they felt like it. It was certainly interesting to have lots of Canucks to remind me of my true north home. Well, you can add me to that list. It was pretty minor but I was scared to eat so all of Monday I just ate oranges and drank tea. The culprit? On Sunday I ate salad, a chicken pastilla, and curried potato cakes. Yay for poop particles! The old man at the hostel. Essaouira, is one of the main reasons for my trip this April, I have read and heard so much about it that I am considering it as a retirement destination. I will also add Taghazout to that list as I really want a small village on the ocean. Welcome to essaouira,i have been traveling to some places around the world and almost have seen many cities in Morocco, but essaouira is special, safe and chill.. Welcome again. There are two hostels right across from each other there but the other one seemed nicer. Lesson learned! Your email address will not be published. This site uses Akismet to reduce spam. I love this photo because I think it encompasses so much of the essence of Essaouira: fishing boats, the walls of the medina, and seagulls! The Good I would totally live in Essaouira.
