Equipment included in all S/R models:

1999: 110 made, only in Zinc Yellow. Equipped with intake by Roush, 7-spoke wheels as found on the later second-generation Escort GT , and a leather/carbon fiber shift knob.

2000: 2000 made, 1000 in yellow, 500 in red, 500 in black. Roush intake replaced by Iceman, wheels changed to the daisies as found on its contemporary Mercury Tracer, shift knob replaced by a leather one without carbon fiber.

From the Ford press release:
The increased presence and success of tuner models from overseas in the late 90s caused Ford to create their own performance model, the ZX2 S/R. Meant to compete with cheap factory performance compacts such as the Honda Civic Si or the Dodge Neon ACR, Ford created the ZX2 S/R to show that they had plenty to bring to the table. Its initial debut was at SEMA's Import Auto Salon in Pomona in 1999. The ZX2 S/R was the first product jointly developed by Ford Racing and Ford Motor Company's Small Vehicle Center Product Development.

Ford's final limited production count was 2,110 units, consisting of 110 yellow S/Rs in 1999, the first two of which were sold in Columbus, Ohio, and the other 108 in southern California, and in 2000, 500 black, 500 red and 1,000 yellow S/Rs for an upgrade price of $1,500 both years. It is believed that only 35 of those 2000 S/Rs were sold in Canada, making it a very rare trim there. The ZX2 S/R also led to inspiration in the British sector of Ford and was laterally built in Europe as the Ford Puma, Top Gear's car of the year in 2002.

The optional S/R package adds stiffer suspension parts (Eibach springs (M-5560-Z2), Tokico struts (M-18000-Z2) and Energy Suspension brand polyurethane suspension bushings), more power (through a Ford Racing PCM (M-12650-Z2)), more efficient intake (Roush and Iceman), rear disc brakes (M-2300-Z2), a stronger clutch (Centerforce dual friction (M-7560-Z2), a short-throw B&M manual-transmission shifter (M-7210-Z2), an S/R-unique shift knob (M-7213-Z2) and boot (M-7277-Z2), upgraded seats, a unique blue valve cover, a different speed cluster that goes up to 150 mph (240 km/h) and a unique tire/wheel package. Engine power was increased 10 percent over the base Zetec engine used in the ZX2 to 143 bhp, courtesy of a recommended premium fuel re-calibration, new air inlet system, the performance PCM, improved Borla muffler and pipe (M-5230-Z2). All ZX2 S/R have a special "S/R" badge on the back, either silver (on a red car) or red (on a yellow or black car). Some S/R went out of the assembly plant without some of the performance missing the Centerforce clutch). The suspension bushings were not installed at the factory but instead packaged with the car for installation at the dealership. This also led to many cars leaving the showroom without the full complement of S/R parts

The Escort ZX2 was launched 1998, one year after the third-generation Escort sedan and wagon. The ZX2 had the Zetec-family 2.0L engine similar to the one found in the larger Ford Contour and Mercury Mystique rather than the SOHC engine in the other Escorts.

Mid-way through the 1999 model year, Ford changed the transmission gearing to provide better fuel economy. Other changes that accompanied the new transmission included a MAF sensor that incorporated a sensor for air temperature and a new style valve cover.

The Escort name was dropped in 2000 when Ford introduced the Focus, the car meant to replace the Escort. While Escort sedans and wagons were no longer sold except to fleets, the Ford ZX2 was still available at dealerships until 2003.

The ZX2 got its first and only facelift in 2003. The front fascia was redesigned, and the wheels were changed to ones that look more like the Focus wheels of the time. The rest of the car remained the same.

The North American version of the Ford Escort is completely different than the European and South American versions. Like the rest of the Escort line, the ZX2 was only sold in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

Ford jumped on late-’90s and early-’00s tuner hype early with this plucky little coupe.

Before Ford offered the ST performance badge in North America, or even an SVT Focus, there was a lesser-known hot subcompact with a blue oval badge. And not the Escort GT; I’m talking about the Ford ZX2 S/R, one of the best platforms to come out of the venerable “Fazda” (or, similarly-pronounced “Fozda”) era when Ford and Mazda joined forces.

Before Mazda had its current goal of trying to take down the luxury institution, Ford owned a healthy chunk of its stock. And between the mid 1970s and 2015, Ford and Mazda partnered on a bunch of different projects. This led to some really cool stuff including rad little V6s, the Mazda2 and Ford Fiesta siblings, the underrated Mazda MX-6 and Ford Probe siblings, some forced induction technology, people putting Ford valve covers on Miata engines, and more. But it also meant that the Ford ZX2, an otherwise unremarkable car, shared a lot of the same parts as the Mazda Protege, another otherwise unremarkable car.
What was remarkable was its, or rather their , chassis. Independent suspension at all four corners and a decently light curb weight meant ZX2s and Proteges handled well, and could be even better with some aftermarket upgrades. Ford decided to capitalize on this and offer a hot version of the ZX2. The blue oval brand put Ford Racing and its Small Vehicle Center Product Development in a room together, so to speak, and what they came up with was the ZX2 S/R.
Debuting at Las Vegas’s big bright car accessory show SEMA in March 1999, the S/R trim was a rare bird from the beginning; it was available on just 1999 and 2000 ZX2 models. 100 were produced in 1999, while 2000 were produced in 2000. You could have it in any color you liked, as long as it was black… or yellow, or red.
More interestingly: Its performance goodies included a Roush intake system, recalibrated ECU, and a Borla exhaust. The result of all that was a claimed 10-percent power increase. Ford also included an Exedy short throw shifter, Centerforce performance clutch, Tokico shocks and struts, Eibach Pro Kit springs, polyurethane bushings by Energy, 205/55/15 Goodyear Eagle F1 tires, and all-wheel disc brakes. It also had some modest interior and exterior accents to sharpen its looks a tad. All the ingredients necessary to offer consumers a fun, engaging sport compact.
At the time, Motor Trend achieved a 0-60 of just 7.6 seconds; not bad for all-motor, 140ish horsepower in 1999.
Ford had also planned to offer a Dynamic Suspension Kit, but according to ex-forum members of the now-defunct TeamZX2.com , it seems this never fully came to be. This included 500-pound rear, 300-pound front springs with adjustable shocks, an adjustable rear sway bar, and camber bolts. Ultimately, enthusiasts weren’t offered the shocks and springs and had to source larger rear sway bars from other Ford cars, and had to buy their own camber bolts if they wanted such an upgrade. Apparently, Ford also swapped the intake manufacturer to a company called Iceman, and did away with the Centerforce clutch.
Still, it’s pretty cool a limited-production sport compact from a domestic car company made as far into performance territory as the ZX2 S/R did.
Even for around the year 2000, the aftermarket parts availability was very good. Companies offered turbocharging, performance camshafts, headers, underdrive pulleys, adjustable cam pulleys (remember those?!), aftermarket exhaust systems, ECU tuning, and more. How perfect that this cool little car made its debut at SEMA; the aftermarket tuning community came out in force for it.
These cars were autocrossed and tracked extensively back in the day, and were well-regarded by enthusiasts, tuners, and the automotive press alike. They’re still on track here and there throughout the U.S.
Not too long after the year 2000, Ford pulled the plug on the ZX2. Up next were the better-engineered ZX3 and ZX5, and of course eventually the Focus ended up getting serious performance variants many years later. It appears that enthusiasts and tuners have largely forgotten about the S/R, though. ZX2 tuning forums have almost completely vanished, and nobody’s produced aftermarket parts for them in a long time. Even a recent perusing of eBay didn’t really yield anything noteworthy.
Ford’s attention changed to the newer SVT Focus and the Focus ZX4 ST. Finally, the Focus and Fiesta STs came, and just recently ceased selling here.
The ZX2 S/R didn’t start the trend of an OEM sport compact by Ford USA. The SVT Contour, Escort GT, and sure, the Merkur XR4Ti, deserve that credit. But it was the first truly modern one with a very solid connection to the aftermarket. Plus, it had some solid figures for being an NA 2.0-liter four-cylinder. It’s a shame Ford didn’t build more; if I could find one I’d totally give it a refresh and go have a blast with it on track. I bet it’d look sick on some Rays 57DRs.
