As the 2018 peak season progresses, the port continues to process record cargo volumes. In recognition of the increased demands placed on the supply chain, and in the interest of accessibility and efficiency, we are pleased to announce the following:
Effective Wednesday, October 10, truck gate hours at Virginia International Gateway (VIG) will be expanded as follows
Open at 0100 hours, Monday – Friday
Portal closure at 1800 hours, Monday – Thursday (1700 hours – Friday)
PRO-PASS Truck Reservation System (TRS) mandatory hours in effect from 0100 – 0800** hours, Monday – Friday
**As of October 18, TRS mandatory hours will be expanded – 0100 – 1000 hours, Monday – Friday
These expanded gate hours will remain in effect, at VIG, until further notice.

VDOT PREPARED TO ASSIST TRAVELERS AHEAD OF HURRICANE FLORENCE
SUFFOLK– The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is assessing travel needs and making preparations to assist motorists ahead of Hurricane Florence. Safety remains VDOT’s top priority as we work to facilitate those under mandatory evacuation in Hampton Roads, the Eastern Shore and points south:
· All HOV restrictions have been lifted on Hampton Roads interstates until further notice.
· The 64 Express Lanes, between the I-64/I-264 Interchange and I-564, are open to westbound traffic and will remain open to westbound traffic until further notice. HOV and E-ZPass requirements have been lifted in the system.
· Lane closures on I-64/I-664 have been suspended. The suspension will remain in place until VDOT determines that the critical need has passed.
· The Jamestown-Scotland Ferry will suspend service between Surry County and the Peninsula beginning 10 a.m. Wednesday.
· There will benolane reversal of the eastbound lanes on Interstate 64 on the Peninsula.
· VDOT has no plans to close any of its water crossings. VDOT closes bridges, ramps or roads only when there is imminent danger to public safety, such as high water, structural damage or downed trees and debris blocking the roadway.The agency will communicate any plans to close a bridge or tunnel through local news outlets,511Virginiaand its own social media channels:Twitter,FacebookandNextdoor.

High Volume of Large Trucks and Buses to be Inspected June 5-7 for International Roadcheck
Greenbelt, Maryland (June 5, 2018) – Starting today, June 5, 2018, commercial motor vehicle inspectors will conduct high-volume, high-visibility inspections of large trucks and buses for 72 hours as part of the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance’s (CVSA) International Roadcheck annual enforcement initiative. Commercial motor vehicles and their drivers will be checked at inspection sites…, weigh stations and roving patrol locations along major roadways in Canada, Mexico and the United States.
Each year, International Roadcheck places special emphasis on a category of violations. This year’s focus is on hours-of-service compliance. While checking for compliance with hours-of-service regulations is always part of a roadside inspection, CVSA is highlighting its importance as it coincides with this year’s April 1, 2018, full enforcement of the electronic logging device mandate that went into effect on Dec. 17, 2017, throughout the United States.
"Hours-of-service violations is the leading category of driver-related violations cited," said CVSA President Capt. Christopher Turner with the Kansas Highway Patrol. "Hours-of-service rules are designed to reduce driver fatigue, which can be a contributing factor in many commercial motor vehicle crashes. Enforcement of hours-of-service requirements is essential to ensuring compliance and combating driver fatigue."
During International Roadcheck, inspectors will primarily conduct the North American Standard Level I Inspection, a 37-step procedure that includes an examination of both driver operating requirements and vehicle mechanical fitness.
The vehicle inspection includes checking brake systems, cargo securement, coupling devices, driveline/driveshaft components, exhaust systems, frames, fuel systems, lighting devices, steering mechanisms, suspensions, tires, van and open-top trailer bodies, wheels, rims and hubs, and windshield wipers. Additional items for buses include emergency exits, electrical cables and systems in the engine and battery compartments, and seating.
Drivers are asked to provide their operating credentials and hours-of-service logging device (or documentation, as applicable) and will be checked for seat belt usage. Inspectors will also be attentive to apparent alcohol and/or drug impairment.
