This is the site of the historic ghost town of Aral. It was a vibrant logging village with sawmill and dock. You can still find remnants of some of the foundations and dock.

The road leading to this beach is in very bad shape, with lots of potholes, and we had damaged to the bottom of our car by the time we got to the beach. The beach itself is very beautiful and would be great as long as you have a vehicle that's able to handle the big potholes.
Since we knew the most popular beaches would be impossibly crowded, we headed down to the southern edge of the lakeshore to Esch Road Beach, also known as Otter Creek, and sometimes even by its proper name, Aral Beach.

That got me looking back at images I made in December on Esch Road Beach, where Otter Creek flows into Lake Michigan. In my past visits, Otter Creek flowed almost directly into the lake. Conditions have changed, however. Lake Michigan has dropped several inches in the last year, dipping about 5 inches below historic levels and expanding the beach.
