The ever efficient German war machine had little trouble sweeping over Greece, yet some stubborn resistance remained active. Various civilian prisoners were thrown with the officers in Stalag VII-Z, a camp on the site of a Neptune temple under two masters: SS Major Volkmann enjoys the unpleasant ways of brutal Nazi extremism, but the gentleman camp commandant, former dodgy Viennese art merchant Major Otto Hecht, definitely prefers the finer things in life, regardless of political 'correctness'. Therefore the camp, meant to sent Berlin archaeological treasures, actually keeps the true treasures for his private black market trade, via Hecht's sister in Switzerland. His 'guests', all fortunate to be spared by him the usual harsh treatment of escapees etc., include the brilliant archeology professor Blake, the Italian cook Bruno Rotelli, American show-people Charlie and Dottie Del Mar, and even black US POW Nat Judson. Hecht's hospitality seems poorly rewarded when they mount an elaborate plan to take over the camp, in league with the local Greek resistance leader Zeno, who is determined to prevent the arbitrary execution of villagers as reprisal. As they all seem to agree upon a common goal, the priceless art treasures in the monastery on nearby Mount Athena, Hecht is persuaded to join for a cut, but Zeno has a military agenda, as the allied invasion is approaching, and the monastery's mountain is also the cover for a secret German rocket installation...
'Escape To Athena' Is an enjoyable late seventies's Action War Comedy, That has an all Star Cast, The story is set somewhere in the Greek islands circa 1944, and center's around the efforts of local, Resistance fighter Zeno Telly Savalas) Who is aided by the ever gorgeous Claudia Cardinale,<br/><br/>Their plan is simple liberate the islands from the inhumane German occupation,And rightfully reclaim the Art treasure's of Athena before the Nasty Nazi's do!<br/><br/>Roger Moore, Is Major Otto Hecht, A Former shady antique's dealer come jazz lover, Elliout Gould, And Stephanie(Hart To Hart, Power's) Play a USO duo who provide's the film with some light hearted moments's<br/><br/>Sonny Bono, is a Italian chef, This guilty pleasure also star's The original 'Shaft' Richard Roundtree, And David Niven, <br/><br/>The film is chock full of Action which display's some stunt technique's then 'new' at the time such as ramp's to propel the stunt's person forward in an explosion,And hidden air Cushion's for some high fall's(which for some reason there's lot's!)<br/><br/>There is a great stunt motorcycle chase,with Elliott Gould which feature's some great Steadicam work, all in all a great film, now available on DVD in 2:35:1 widescreen
If one asked why does the press and critics hate "this movie" and they would have loads of different answers on whether it has a rather poor plot and its either silly or overdone and this World War II adventure titled Escape to Athena is no exception being among the worst films to be premiered during 1979 and there is every possibility that this movie almost looked a bit like a remake of The Guns of Navarone classic due to similarity of filming locations supposing centred around the Mediterranean. Even so, the casting of Roger Moore, Telly Savalas and David Niven plus many more clearly seemed to be totally wasted in this utterly inept movie where they seem to be enjoying the roles they should never have played until they realise it when this one crashed in the Box Office and by look of it, has World War II crept into the computerised security era of 1979 some 34 years after it supposed to have ended? At the same time as well as starring as James Bond in Moonraker, Roger Moore had also filmed another failure movie, this one being North Sea Hyjack. Either Moore didn't take film roles seriously enough and can't act or was he typecast as Simon Templar or James Bond and seemed to parachute helplessly into unsuccessful films.
