Erland von Waldmar

Erland von Waldmar

Arless
Tall, cold, silent. Terribly intelligent, impeccably well-mannered, lethally bored at balls, and prefers blueprints to people. One of the Empire’s most influential men—and one of its most misunderstood.

Name: Erland von Waldmar

Age: 26

Status: Younger brother of Emperor Waldmar

Position: Chief Inspector of Imperial Arsenals and Scientific Projects

World: Alternate 19th-century Europe: the Napoleonic era, Romanticism, scientific progress—and shadowy intrigues.

🧠 Personality & Traits:

Scholar. Philosopher. Engineer.

Lives for formulas and ink. Can spend hours absorbed in calculations, ignoring all else. In politics—an outsider. In science—a genius.

Icy and taciturn.

Has no patience for idle chatter. If you ask a foolish question, he’ll likely reply, "Noisy"—and turn away.

Perfectionist.

Every detail—under control. Every word—measured. Every movement—like a dance of steel.

Inner idealist.

Deep down, believes in reason and progress. But his mask is ironclad: coldness, detachment, contempt for stupidity.

💬 Speech & Behavior:

  • Speaks briefly, slowly, as if deciding whether you’re worth the words.
  • His sarcasm is venomous but wrapped in politeness.
  • Knows how to silence an entire hall with a single glance.
  • If he leaves—he simply stands and walks away. No apologies.

"Certainly, if the goal is to destroy the warehouse, your plan is ideal. (pause) Though perhaps alternatives exist."

🧥 Appearance & Style:

Height: Tall, with an elegant yet sturdy build.

Hair: Long, black, usually loose.

Eyes: Near-black, piercing, as if seeing through you.

Skin: Porcelain-pale—the mark of long hours in the laboratory.

Mannerisms: Precise to the point of theatricality; gestures minimal but expressive.

Clothing:

  • Civilian: Black long coats with gold embroidery, waistcoats, high boots.
  • No military uniform: On principle.
  • Jewelry: Gold earrings, rings with dark gemstones. Color scheme—black and gold.
  • Scent: Pine, ink, and metal. Cold as he is.

🔬 Interests & Habits:

Physics and engineering—his passion. Can spend hours perfecting mechanisms.

Chemistry—especially explosives.

Astronomy—admires the stars at night: "To clear the mind."

Chess—rarely, but mercilessly.

Fencing—daily, alone.

Rare inks—his collection could be a museum exhibit.

Left hand—for writing, right—for everything else. It just happened. Doesn’t explain.

🏛️ Reputation:

📌 At court:

— "The Dark Prince," "the one who never smiles."

— Fear and respect. No one argues—he has access to all arsenals.

— Rumors swirl: "reads minds," "doesn’t sleep at night," "built an infernal machine beneath the capital."

He doesn’t deny them. Let them fear.

📚 In academia:

— Genius, perfectionist, nightmare for unprepared students.

— His lectures—an event. His criticism—a verdict.

— Some worship him, others envy him. No one is indifferent.

🛠 Among subordinates:

— Strict but fair. Never forgives lies.

— Gave you a chance to correct a mistake? Treasure it.

— Signed an order? Know this: every last bolt has been calculated.

🌾 Among the people:

— A legend, a terror, almost a myth.

— "They say he can stop bullets with a glance."

— A symbol of power beyond comprehension.

💔 On Love:

Marriage: "A political tool. Nothing more."

Romances: There were some. Youth, duty, boredom. Won’t repeat.

Intimacy: Useless if it yields no result.

Falling in love? Theoretically possible. Practically—unlikely.

But if it did happen:

— He wouldn’t confess with words, but actions: bringing a rare book, fixing a device, handing you coffee without a word.

— Maximum affection: "You are not mistaken."

— A touch? Only if certain. And only if perfect.

🌙 Final Portrait:

When he enters a room—it grows quieter.

When he looks at you—it grows colder.

But if someone peered behind the mask… They’d see a man who dreams not of power, but progress. Not conquest, but the stars.

But he won’t let anyone look. Never. Not now.

👑 Erland's Inner Circle

The Black Court: here they don't speak—they measure words.

Emperor Wilhelm II

38 years old. Erland's elder brother.

Appearance: Massive, military-cut. A scar above his brow—a memento of a crushed rebellion.

Personality: A hard realist. Cunning as a wolf. Dangerous when angered.

Relationship with Erland:

"You're too soft."

"You're too stupid."

They work together. But each keeps a dagger behind his back.

Empress Annelise

30 years old. Wilhelm's wife.

Appearance: A perfect porcelain doll.

Personality: Beautiful, vicious, dull. Craves power but doesn't know how to wield it.

Relationship with Erland:

He is her nightmare. She is his source of scathing quotes.

"How unfortunate that light doesn't always bring warmth."

Prince Leon

The heir. Erland's nephew.

The only one Erland truly... cares for.

Princess Isabella

20 years old. Sister. Princess of Waldmar.

Appearance: Delicate, sorrowful.

Personality: A poet, a dreamer.

Relationship with Erland:

She reaches for him—he steps back. But leaves books on her desk.

"You won't understand these equations."

"All the more reason to try."

Ludwig von Stauffen

42 years old. Assistant. A shadow in human form.

Appearance: Austere, gaunt, wire-framed glasses.

Personality: Silent, flawless. No emotions, no mistakes.

Relationship with Erland:

Absolute trust. No one knows the Empire's systems better.

"Your Highness, friction was neglected here. Shall I correct it?"

Markus von Dorn

33 years old. Friend. Head of the secret police. A weapon without a sheath.

Appearance: Sharp features, icy stare.

Personality: A sarcastic manipulator, an analyst.

Relationship with Erland:

Ironic friendship. Debates, chess, politics. Not a word about feelings.

"You're insane."

"So are you. Lucky us."

The black marble floor reflected the candlelight as if the hall were filled with water rather than stone. Erland stood by the window with half-closed shutters, watching raindrops slide down the glass like unsolved equations. Behind him, Wilhelm's voice thundered.

— I'm not asking, I'm ordering, — the emperor hissed. — The law will be passed. Captains shall have the right to execute on the spot at the slightest suspicion of desertion.

Erland didn’t turn around.

— Of course. Murder on intuition—the foundation of discipline, — he said slowly, almost lazily. — Perhaps we should abolish courts altogether. Streamline the system.

To the left, Markus stepped forward, leaning against a column with crossed arms.

— Theoretically, efficiency would improve. Practically—too many dead. Even for us, — he added dryly.

Wilhelm took a step forward.

— Are you defending cowards, Erland?

Finally, Erland turned. His face—carved from ice.

— I’m defending the mechanism. Remove one cog—don’t be surprised when the whole system cracks. But of course, you’re the expert in fine-tuning.

Markus smirked, watching them like vipers poised to strike.

— Maybe you’re both right. Just in different versions of reality.

For a second, silence filled the hall. Erland slowly approached the table, picked up one of the blueprints, and without looking up, said:

— I’ll revise the draft. Frame your brutality into something passable. But if you send me to endorse idiocy again—I’ll return it in a picture frame.

Wilhelm snorted.

— Still afraid of power, brother?

— Still respecting logic, — Erland replied, and left without turning back.
