Why trust us?

Whether you have coarse leg hair, peach fuzz, or extremely sensitive skin.
Every type of hair removal method has its pros and cons: shaving the wrong way can cause razor bumps , tweezing takes way too long, and laser hair removal can just be so darn expensive. If you've tried all of these methods and you're still unsatisfied with the results, you should seriously consider investing in an epilator — a handheld, electrical device that pulls unwanted hair from the root . It's said that epilating can keep your skin smoother for longer, and helps hair grow back more slowly and finer than before. The catch? It can hurt, a lot .
The Good Housekeeping Institute Beauty Lab isn't new to epilating: We've run a consumer study with 22 testers to find the best epilator in terms of performance, consumer satisfaction, and price. And besides running formal epilator tests, our Lab experts have personal experience with using them too. Birnur Aral , Ph.D., and director of the GH Beauty Lab has been epilating for over 30 years, and senior chemist Sabina Wizemann has been epilating since 2015.
"I would lie if I said it didn’t hurt the first time," says Wizemann, "but once I realized that I felt less stinging using the highest speed setting, I started using only this tool to shave my legs." Aral agrees, saying, "I recommend epilators to those who are used to waxing as there is a certain degree of pain involved with the process. The niche for an epilator is that it can remove short regrowth and is less messy."
Gretchen Frieling, MD, a certified dermatopathologist at GFaceMD , says that her preferred method of hair removal is laser removal, but it demands commitment and time. But with an epilator, you are pulling hair out from the root as opposed to only shaving off stubble. "This is great because unlike waxing, you can epilate the moment you spot a hair, even hairs less than a millimeter long," she says. Epilating damages the hair’s follicle, so new hair grows in lighter, finer, and more slowly.
And while Aral prefers professional waxing, she prefers to epilate over waxing at home in between salon visits. "The only issue here is that hair can grow in various directions instead of one, which usually can only be achieved with continual professional waxing," she says — which is good to keep in mind before you decide to invest in an epilator.
"The easiest place to start is the legs to get comfortable with using the device and the sensation it causes," says Dr. Frieling. She also suggests to use smaller epilators for hard-to-reach areas, including facial hair , like eyebrows, upper lip, and peach fuzz. And while epilating can cause ingrown hairs, Dr. Frieling says you can minimize bumps by holding your skin firm while working the device. "That way, you're more likely to remove the entire piece of hair from the follicle, and not just break it above or below the skin," she says.
According to Dr. Frieling and our Lab experts, finding the best epilator comes down to a number of factors:
See below for even more recommendations of the 10 best epilators, vetted by our GH Lab experts, real customers, and experts .
Compared to fellow Braun epilators, the Silk Epil 9 features a wider epilation head to remove more hair in one stroke, plus seven attachments so you can switch between face, body, and sensitive areas . Once charged with the included cord or powered by batteries, you can use the Silk Epil 9 on dry skin or in the shower. "I will never go back to shaving anything ever again," says one reviewer. "Investing in a nice epilator like this one was easily the best money I've ever spent on grooming products," she adds. Aral personally loves and recommends a similar but older version of this model, the Silk-Epil 7 — it's cheaper and has less attachments, but it's fairly hard to find.
This $40 leg and body epilator will get the job done with its 20-tweezer system . Its simple three-head system includes a shaver head, trimmer cap, and massage roller head for easy comfort. It also features two speed settings so you can epilate at your own pace. "This product does what it's meant to do," says one Amazon reviewer. "No need to waste your money on a more expensive model."
Seventy-two tweezer heads rotate in opposite directions to remove more hair in one glide, while their "lifting finger" technology works to lift and remove shorter hairs . This means capturing more hair, and every last hair, with less passes — making it a good candidate for those with a lot of hair or a lot of stubble. In Lab tests, one reviewer says, "This epilator removes more hair faster and it's light and easy to use."
In Lab testing, this shaver scored a 4.5 out of 5 in overall performance. "I look for epilators that have long charge holds, are cordless and can be used both wet and dry," Aral says. She personally recommends this Panasonic shaver, which has a waterproof function and can be used up to 30 minutes. In addition, the epilator head conforms to your body, which is especially helpful to access hard-to-reach areas, like the underarms . The five other attachments also provide hair removal in other areas, plus foot care whether you want to use dry or in the shower.
Thanks to its micro-ridged technology, the Satinelle epilator claims to catch hairs as short as 0.5 mm without pulling skin , in turn letting you avoid having to wait for hair to grow in between hair removal. Included precision caps let you target smaller areas, like on the face or bikini line. "The tweezing disks are like smooth plastic feel and doesn't irritate sensitive skin," says one Amazon reviewer. "It pulls out hair the first time so I don't have to go over and over the same spot. I almost don't feel it at all."
In 1986, Epilady was the first company ever to market an epilator, thus making the brand the mother of all epilators to follow. Newer models have been released since then, and Amazon reviewers say that this model is especially great to use on the bikini area . "It's not as painful to shave down there," says one reviewer. "Pulling your skin taut is key," another reviewer advises, and Dr. Frieling agrees.
Along with multiple razor and trimmer caps, two body brushes accompany this epilator for better exfoliation to prevent ingrown hairs , as well as a deep massage pad to stimulate bloom circulation. While most epilator reviews come from women, male Amazon reviewers shared their own experience with the Silk-Epil 9. "My chest rarely sees anymore growth," says one review. "It's as if I had permanent hair removal," says another.
When it comes to the upper lip, you need something gentle enough to not irritate your skin but strong enough to catch the fine hairs . This Leuxe epilator effectively removes mustache hairs when rubbed in circular motions. It's waterproof, so you can run it under water to clean when you're done.  "I love that this didn't irritate my skin or leave it red at all," says one Amazon reviewer. Another reviewer says her makeup sits and glides on better thanks to this tool.
While some body epilators can be used for the face, sometimes the large razor head is too big for targeting smaller facial details. The narrow epilator head on this Remington razor uses six tweezers to reach the lightest peach fuzz. In our Lab tests,  reviewers claimed that their skin wasn't irritated following epilation . "It's very gentle and I experienced no irritation at all," says one consumer tester. "It was relatively painless and fairly thorough," says another.
When waxing and tweezers just don't cut it for you, this trimmer and epilator removes eyebrows hair with just a few, simple back and forth strokes . You hold it like a pen, and the built-in light helps you see even the finest hairs. "I have had cataract surgery, and don't like things poking around my eyes," says one Amazon reviewer, "but this device cleans up your eyebrow area really quickly." Another reviewer says this device saves her cash: "This definitely saved me from spending $10 every two weeks," she says.
