I live in the Minnesota, in the USA and want to take my Teen Son to Germany , after he completes his studies in April. I also have my eldest son who lives in England , with his wife and my grand daughter.. I need to find the best way to travel between Germany and England. Is it economically better to travel late April or Early May to Germany? I can fly non stop to either Hamburg , Munich , but have found that flying into Dusseldorf or Strasbourg has more availability. Either way, we will tour Munich and Hamburg in no particular order then need to travel to England . What is economic, educational and scenic way to travel between Germany and England? I am likely to have 7 days to make this trip work out and am also open to travel by ship, if that is possible. I am not in any way going to rent a car . We will catch a cab when needed. My son would like to see the glockenspiel, Neuschwanstein,The Hofbräuhaus and DACHAU . I am in need of ideas for transportation once in Europe , places to stay and things to do appealing for a teen (18) Upon our trip to England, my son will stay with his brother for a month visit as I return to the states. We have a 2k budget.
Looks like we have to fly into Frankfurt first...
Correction to above post. We will be flying into Frankfurt . first.
If you are flying into Frankfurt , see if your airline offers some version of the "Fly and Rail" train tickets from the airport to Munich . Then from Munich you can easily reach Neuschwanstein, Dachau and other points by train.
Here's an excellent overview of using the train system in Germany :
In Bavaria , they have the Bayern Ticket which is a day ticket that's good on trains and busses throughout Bavaria:
It's inexpensive (22 euros for the first person, and 4 euros a person up to five total people).
As emilysmom2003 said, you can take a train from Frankfurt Aiport's Terminal 1 to Munich without having to go into Frankfurt proper.
I would at least spend a day in Frankfurt before plopping myself on a train again for another 3 hours. After a long flight , this doesn't sound like fun to me.
This way, you could get discount tickets to Munich , leaving early the next morning, and you don't risk missing your train because of flight delays. Buying your tickets 3 months ahead of time gets you the best discount prices. Frankfurt has much to offer and is very historic. What are the interests of your son? He is an adult by the way, not a teen, and must have hobbies or special interests. There are lots of museums here of all kinds, several medieval churches, various historic buildings and an extensive, long Jewish history.
Recommend you fly from Munich to London .
@ zed1958 - every state in Germany has its own Länder ticket, not just Bavaria . Check on the Deutsche Bahn website to find prices, etc. for the various states.
I think the rail/fly tickets are valid the day after you land also, but from the US it's a morning landing so that shouldn't be a problem to travel on the same day. I think after a long flight getting to your final destination is quite possibly more appealing than dealing with your lugagge and going sightseeing, it certainly would be for me!.
I do agree with Bornheimgirl that you must have an idea of your younger son's interests, and that at 18 he could give you some input too. It's true that at eighTEEN you are still a teenager (as you are at 19) but no longer a minor. So in Europe you are allowed to drink alcohol legally at 18 (at the latest)

Has your son done any of his own research? Every 18yr old I know can wizz round the internet in mili-seconds .. get him to do some of the planning .. though his research might end up stopping at any one of the pub-crawl tours offered.
