I have a rifle with a 5/16 ramrod hole that I want to enlarge to 3/8. Why take the risk? Replace your 2 forward thimbles with 3/8ths ones. Take a 3/8ths ramrod and gradually taper it to 5/16ths from the entry thimble to the end. You won't sacrifice that much strength and visually it will appear the same.

Push the ramrod in short strokes, gripping it just a few inches above the muzzle. If you use longer strokes, you might accidentally snap the rod and injure your hands or arm. Your ramrod should be marked to show when the ball is properly seated over a specific load, such as 70 grains of FFFg powder.

Recently I was working on my first ram rod on my Dimick muzzleloader build. The barrel is 34" and has 7/16" pipes. The ram rod that came with the kit was a 7/16" piece of hickory. It was a bit to large to fit in the pipes, so I started sanding the rod by hand.
The only thing that changes from ramrod to ramrod is the the size of the head in front of the front thimble. The head I make just a little smaller than the bore. Obviously, I scrape away most of the ramrod blank just like the stock blank. Usually it only takes 30-60 minuted to scrape down a ramrod.

How long do you guys, especially with half-stock guns, keep your ramrods? Mine sticks past the muzzle by about 2 inches. But while seating some round balls at the range a couple weeks ago it seemed the length of rod left to grip was a bit short for good leverage. Just wondering. Pics?

The wooden, un-threaded ramrod had to go. I decided to build a fiberglass ramrod. If the ball strikes nothing as it leaves your barrel, it will have the same accuracy regardless of the situation with your ramrod. The ramrods extending past the barrel, will have absolutely no bearing on the accuracy of your shot.
I personally would order 1/2" Ramrods stock for all those calibers :thumbsup: However, some of the .75 caliber muskets came with steel ramrods, and the pipes may be too small to fit a wooden ramrod. So, always check the inside diameter of your pipes.

When selecting brass tips for your rod be sure one is small enough to pass through the thimbles and reach the bottom of the ramrod hole in the stock. The tip on the other end doesn't have to be the same size, my smoothbore guns have small tips on the bottom end and larger tips at the muzzle end which are closer in size to the bore diameter.

For a ramrod, usually shorter barrels up to 40 inches, I'm going to select the best "section" on the dowel and trim off the "bad end" with a fine tooth saw. I give the dowel a quick sand with 320 paper to clean it up and make it easier to see imperfections, also remove any splinters.

Recommend getting shortest rod required. The shorter the rod, the more rigid it is and harder to bend. Most muzzleloaders will load fine with the 26″ rod + jag. Very few require the longest 30″ rod. Length of ramrod vs barrel I like to make the ramrod as long as possible, until one end touches the front pin tab of the trigger guard and the other end is flush with the muzzle.
