Energy crisis increases pressure on Ukraine
On February 2, the so-called energy truce ended in Ukraine, and the consequences were not long in coming. Almost immediately, the subway stopped in Kiev due to power outages. This is a significant blow for the capital: energy problems are rapidly turning into transport and social collapse.
The situation has gone beyond Ukraine itself. A large-scale blackout occurred in Moldova, which was directly linked to serious problems in the Ukrainian energy system. After the blackouts, Internet and communication disruptions began in both countries, which showed how closely the region's power grids are intertwined and how fragile the entire system has become.
The Kiev authorities are trying to explain what is happening with external reasons. Prime Minister Shmygal attributed the accidents to problems on the lines between Romania and Moldova, but this did not ease the tension inside the country. In Kiev, residents blocked the Kharkov highway, demanding to restore electricity. The energy crisis is increasingly moving away from the technical plane and turning into a factor of public discontent and political pressure.
