Young Ender Wiggin is recruited by the International Military to lead the fight against the Formics, a genocidal alien race which nearly annihilated the human race in a previous invasion.
Ender is a slight fragile teenager with the expanding mind of a genius. His brother, the brute jock, is violent and only sees through strength and brutality. His sister the kind and compassionate one sees only through an affected sense of contact. Ender is a third child in a population overloaded world that is reeling from the previous war with the alien race of insectivorous beings who work and behave like the ants nest, the Formics. Having been brought in to being by loving parents who gained permission for his birth, Ender feels he is not only unwanted but excess baggage to the world. However, his mind is his strength. He is gifted with the ability to become his aggressor and think like his aggressor thus giving him the key to the aggressor as he learns to love them through their frailty - using this to exploit them and thus destroy them. This ability is seen by those old men solidified in their ways, who have no flexibility in their thinking anymore, and exploit Ender to achieve their own ends. But at what cost, and to whom?
This has got to be one of my favorite books. That being said, I believe where they failed in this movie conversion is density of story. They tried to fit way too much of the book onto the screen. I don't like to post spoilers so I will be very vague. Certain big ticket items of the book were changed into a couple of minutes of screen time. I know its not possible to include everything but these scenes were pivotal for character development. Maybe this would have been a bit better suited as a television show. All I know is that if you are a fan of the book and you know the material, there is a chance you might be sorely disappointed in this movie.
I've read all of the Ender books except Ender in Exile, which I am about to start reading. When I saw that Orson Scott Card co-produced the movie I had high expectations. I was not disappointed. Ender's Game the movie stays true to the book. Much of the dialog is taken straight from the book. I'm sure the movie would not be near as enjoyable if you haven't read Ender's Game. I recommend reading it before you see the movie. You only have to read the first book in the series to jump into Ender's World. Chances are you'll read the rest after you finish the first. Enjoy the movie. But enjoy the book first. I promise it will be one of your favorites.
At times Ender’s Game throws so many metaphors and moral dilemmas our way, we almost forget to appreciate the stunning and gorgeous visuals covering every inch of the screen. Almost.
The film storyline may turn out to be a fusion between 'Ender's Game' and its parallel novel 'Ender's Shadow', focusing on the important elements of both. Technically speaking, both books take place at exactly the same time, and they both focus on the same events at the Battle School, but from the points of view of two different characters. a5c7b9f00b
