Now Reading The Dark History Of Celebrity Photo Hacks
Emma Watson and Amanda Seyfried are in the news, and it’s not for their March movies Beauty and the Beast and The Last Word .
Unfortunately, Watson and Seyfried's privacy has been compromised, thanks to the work of online hackers. In a stunt coined “The Fappening 2,” the supposed sequel to August 2014’s massive photo leak , multiple nude celebrity photos are currently being disseminated across the internet.
This recent hack eerily coincides with the release of an alleged sex tape featuring actress Mischa Barton. With such egregious affronts to privacy becoming commonplace, it's clear that women celebrities are being especially targeted by hackers and trolls. But how much do you know about the history of such attacks?
From 4Chan to legal responses, here’s a timeline of the forces at work behind such disturbing violations.

When most celebrities meet politicians, they tend to dress conservatively, a la Olivia Rodrigo wearing a knee-length pink skirt suit when she went to the White House earlier this year. Well, Emma Watson isn’t most celebrities.

Emma posted more pics and video from the encounter on Instagram, including this one:
Of course, it’s hard to miss the fact that Emma looks super fit in all of them. And, yeah, she doesn’t screw around when it comes to her workouts.
Emma gets her sweat on with celebrity trainer Emily Drew, who she usually does 30-minute sessions, according to Delish . Those focus on stretching, strength, and stillness —like holding yoga poses while meditating—stability ball exercises to tone her obliques, along with cardio, intense abdominals work, and walking.
Emma also told Marie Claire that she’s heavy on walking, but hinted that she doesn't do it as much as she'd like. It's “pretty hopeless,” she said.
Emma eats well, too, but she told Marie Claire she usually cooks for herself.
“I don't like using recipes — I like to cook things I just know how to cook,” she said.
Her goal: To eventually go to the world-famous cooking school Le Cordon Bleu. “I figure if I went and really learned, I would be the kind of person who could open the fridge and be like, ‘I know what I will make with this one piece of celery and this random piece of butter and this pasta,’” she said.
What she does like to cook, though, is a yummy breakfast taco. “I make a really amazing egg tortilla in the morning,” she said. “It's my special thing. I make guacamole, salsa, and scrambled eggs, and then I cook the tortilla. It's pretty simple, really, but yummy.”

As an 18-year-old in 2009, when she was still playing the part of Hermione Granger in the Harry Potter movies , the actress famously said nudity wasn’t her thing . “I have no plans to do anything for the sake of it or to shock people. I might be willing to take my clothes off for a Bertolucci (famed arthouse director Bernardo) fi lm, if it was a part that really made sense as part of my character. But I wouldn’t do it just to make a point, to move on from Hermione. I’m not just getting my kit off for anyone.”
Now eight years on and a month before she turns 27, it appears she may have reneged on those words.
Despite being an artfully shot series of glossy photos, not snaps befitting of a Playboy centrefold, these new risqué poses have bagged headlines for Watson, something sceptics might say is all part of a cynical marketing ploy.
After all, having shot to fame as Hermione in 2001 and starring in all eight Harry Potter movies, she has become more famous recently for the parts she has turned down.
First there was the title role in Kenneth Branagh’s Cinderella. Then she turned down the lead in La La Land. The actress who took the part, Emma Stone, went on to win the Oscar for Best Actress earlier this week and Watson, despite her protestations that she “couldn’t care less” about winning one, must surely be kicking herself.
Last month the New York Post reported that Watson missed out on the prize-winning role of aspiring actress Mia because she was “too demanding”.
According to the report, “Watson was offered the lead female role but she initially wouldn’t commit. Then she began making all these crazy demands, like rehearsals for the fi lm must be done in London for a fi lm called La La Land!”
Undeterred, Watson will return to the big screen twice in quick succession this spring. Next month she will appear with Tom Hanks in the thriller The Circle. Now she is busy blazing a publicity trail ahead of the release of the remake of the 1991 fairytale cartoon classic Beauty And The Beast, in which she stars as the heroine, Belle.
I might be willing to take my clothes off for a Bertolucci film, if it was a part that really made sense as part of my character
Rather like posing near-topless, playing the part of a Disney princess also seems curiously at odds with the feminist image Watson has carved out in recent years.
In 2014 she became a UN Women goodwill ambassador giving arousing speech that made headlines around the globe as she called for men to sign up for the HeForShe campaign, aimed at getting men to support women’s issues.
The following year she was named in the Time 100 list of the world’s most influential people and she has developed a penchant for leaving feminist books on the Tube. In her UN speech she said: “My research has showed that feminism has become an unpopular word and women are choosing not to identify as feminist.
“But I think it’s right that I’m paid the same as my male counterparts, it is right that I should be able to make decisions about my own body and that socially I’m afforded the same respect as men.”
Since hanging up Hermione’s robes after the last Harry Potter movie was released in 2011 Watson, who is worth about £48million, has won more plaudits for her activism than her acting.
In fact when she enrolled to study English literature at Brown University on Rhode Island in the US in 2009, what few people knew was that she was on the cusp of giving up acting altogether.
Watson told Vanity Fair: “This fame thing was getting to a point of no return. I sensed if this was something I was ever going to step away from it was now or never.”
Instead Watson, who was born in Paris to lawyer parents then raised in Oxfordshire by her mother after their divorce, took on less starry roles during her five years’ of studying, which included a short stint at Oxford University.
A contemporary of Watson’s who studied with her at Worcester College and who wishes to remain anonymous, recalls: “ On her staircase [where students’ names are listed] they had her down as Humphrey Appleby [the civil servant from Yes, Minister] which always marked her out as a bit different.
“She only really did two terms and the college had to make lots of accommodations for her . It’s a shame because lots of students would have liked that place but she got the chance and didn’t make the most of it. ”
Now almost three years since she graduated it seems Watson is ready to propel herself back into the Hollywood limelight, as her daring Vanity Fair photoshoot illustrates. On Tuesday she tweeted a photo of the magazine’s cover to her 24 million followers and she has been actively promoting both her new movies on social media
When the first trailer for Beauty And The Beast went online in November, it was viewed a record 127 million times in 24 hours, 27 million of which were on her own Facebook page.
So what’s her take on appearing as a Disney princess – doesn’t it conflict with the feminist ideal she is also promoting? After all in the original Disney classic Belle was a mere assistant to her inventor father.
When asked this very question by Vanity Fair, Watson insisted that she is not being hypocritical, adamant that in this new incarnation of Beauty And The Beast, Belle has become a creator in her own right even developing a “modern washing machine that allows her to sit and read”.
Watson said: “When I finished the film, it kind of felt like I had made that transition into being a woman on-screen. Belle is absolutely a Disney princess but she’s not a passive character . She is in charge of her own destiny.”
Perhaps this is reflective of how Emma Watson sees herself in the daring photos – a young woman who has come of age and, far from contradicting her feminist beliefs, knows exactly what she’s doing and is doing it on her own terms.
The March issue of Vanity Fair is on sale from tomorrow.
