Women’s clothing can be really tricky when it comes to undergarments. Men really just have to make sure that their boxers or boxer-briefs aren’t bunching up strangely, but for the most part, they don’t need to really worry about anything ruining the line of their clothes. Women, on the other hand, have to make sure their bra isn’t making their top look weird, that their bra straps aren’t hanging out, and that their underwear isn’t creating any weird lines that ruin their otherwise totally gorgeous outfit. Sure, they have shapewear you can rock for special events, but who’s going to wiggle into a full body shaper under their jeans and t-shirt every day? No one.
It seems that even celebrities, who know they’re going to be photographed pretty much whenever they step outside the house, aren’t immune to VPL - that’s visible panty line, for those who aren’t familiar with the term. The most dreaded of wardrobe malfunctions. I mean, who wants to broadcast to the entire world the exact panties you’re wearing under that killer outfit? It seems a simple enough fix - you just need to check your lower half in the mirror and make sure there’s nothing showing through - but it can happen to the best of us.
Here are 15 celebs who maybe should have just gone commando - it would have helped avoid that VPL.
Kim Kardashian rocks a lot of body conscious outfits that show off her curves - I mean, they are what she’s known for - so it comes as no surprise that she’d make a misstep every now and then when it came to what she rocked under her outfits. From far away, this outfit is cute and casual - a forest green pencil skirt with a simple grey cropped tee. However, if you look closely, you’ll see a weird lump on her behind where her underwear is cutting into her flesh. Unfortunately, with a skirt that tight, you can’t hide much - and she definitely should have opted to go commando or rock a far skimpier piece of underwear for this ensemble. She has crazy curves that everyone is jealous of, so a malfunction like this is just a shame
Unlike many of her fellow female celebrities, Emma Stone isn’t a huge fan of bodycon clothing. Her style off the red carpet is far more casual, veering towards jeans and t-shirts rather than skintight pencil skirts. However, you can have VPL in even more loosely fitting clothing, as this outfit demonstrates. Stone is rocking an adorable mini skirt and blouse combo, and though the bottom of the skirt is flared out, the top portion hugs her body - and shows off exactly what type of underwear she’s wearing. It’s tough to tell how thick the material of the skirt is, but given what a clear VPL can be spotted, it’s likely thinner material. This is why you need to check out your rear before you step outside - you don’t want to be broadcasting your underwear to the world.
When you think of outfits prone to VPL, chances are you think of figure-hugging skirts or dresses made out of a thin material. However, Selena Gomez’ outfit on this day out proves that you can even get VPL in denim - although, obviously, it’s probably a thinner denim than average if the line is so prominent. Selena Gomez rocked a casual outfit of heels, jeans, a denim jacket and a ponytail for this day out with friends, and it totally works - until you look closer and see that her high-waisted jeans can’t quite manage to hide what type of underwear she’s wearing. We have to wonder - did she simply not have any thongs clean that she could have rocked with these jeans to avoid the whole mess? Or did she just not care? Either way, this outfit would have been a whole lot cuter if she had gone commando.
Look, we get it - it can be really tough to find undergarments that look great under a white dress. If the dress is heavily lined and hides anything underneath, that’s fine, but most thinner white dresses are at least semi-sheer - meaning you can’t really wear dark colours, bright colours, or even any sort of colour underneath unless you want everyone to know you’re wearing a purple bra and mismatched green underwear. Audrina figured the safest bet would be simple white panties, but unfortunately, it doesn’t have the intended effect of just all blending into the dress - you can see them clear as day, as if she were wearing neon yellow underwear. In situations like this, it’s always best to go with nude-coloured garments - a tip you’d think her stylist would have told her.
Given how often they’re on camera - basically every hour of every day for the past several years - you would think that the Kardashians would always look flawless in any outfit. After all, it’s not just hanging out on the couch watching movies if you’re a Kardashian - that could be used in a clip of the show, so you’d better have flawless make-up and a cute lounging outfit. Kourtney is hanging out here in a casual outfit of leggings and a layered crop sweater, and while her legs definitely show off how hard she works in the gym, there’s just no ignoring the VPL that’s visible when she turns to the side. When you’re rocking tight leggings like that, there really is just no way to hide your panty lines - that’s why you need to either find seamless options or something a bit skimpier.
British reality television personality Lauren Goodger, who you may recognize from The Only Way is Essex , is just out running errands in a retro sweatsuit. We can’t fault her for the outfit - it looks super cozy, to be honest - and she obviously wasn’t expecting the paparazzi to spot her. However, when you’re a celebrity, you kind of have to be okay with the fact that the paparazzi could find you whenever you step out in public - so you want to make sure you’re looking in a way that you wouldn’t be upset if they snapped a few shots. Unfortunately, Goodger has opted for underwear that’s slightly too snug and is leaving some not so cute panty lines visible beneath her yoga pants. We love yoga pants too, but you have to be aware of the challenges they present when it comes to VPL.
The worst part about this VPL situation is that the outfit actually is super cute on English beauty Kelly Brook. She tends to favour figure-hugging outfits, so it’s nice to see her in something a little bit different. The white top fits her perfectly, the red shorts are fun, and the patterned heels really complete the outfit. The only problem is, Brook didn’t bother to check herself out from behind before stepping out her front door - and as a result, she’s got a bad case of VPL. Perhaps this should have been the time to go commando and avoid ruining those sassy red shorts with a big old panty line. I mean, at least she wasn’t wearing granny panties, though - from what you can tell, her underwear is pretty skimpy, so she can keep her bombshell image intact.
Maggie Gyllenhaal is one of indie theatre’s favourite actresses. Sure, she’s been in quite a few bigger hits, but she truly shines in indie roles that allow her to show off her quirky side. As a result, while she’s a household name, she doesn’t get stalked by the paparazzi nearly as much as some other A-List actresses do - which she probably appreciates. However, every now and then, a paparazzo will spot her while she’s out running errands and decide to snag a photo because, well, she’s still a big celebrity. In this shot of a pregnant Maggie, it’s clear that she’s dressing for comfort - however, even if you’re rocking a cozy knit sweater and yoga pants, that doesn’t mean you have to be showing major VPL. All she needed was a sweater that either covered her behind so that it was all hidden, or to have gone commando under her casual pants.
Television presenter Holly Willoughby may not be a household name in North America, but to those on the other side of the pond, the blonde bombshell is well known. That means she’s used to being photographed - so you’d think she’d have it down to a science, right? Well, not exactly. She looks absolutely stunning here, with casual hair, neutral make-up, and a chic mostly-white outfit. The only problem is that she didn’t think about the fact that those white pants are basically painted on - which means you can see exactly what type of underwear she has on underneath them. If you’re going for pants this thin and tight, honestly, you need to either go commando or go for a barely there thong. This situation is not working at all - and it’s a shame, because the outfit itself is pretty cute.
Khloe Kardashian is definitely not shy about showing off her newly slimmed down bod, and why would she be? She worked super hard in the gym to sculpt her curves, so she should totally be flaunting that in bodycon outfits. However, perhaps a mirror check is in order next time. Now, the lace bra showing through the sheer, long-sleeved top looks purposeful - it adds a bit more sexiness to the already form-fitting shirt. The bottom, though? While the pencil skirt hugs her curves perfectly, the material is stretched just a little bit too thin - and as a result, you can clearly see her underwear underneath. Not a good look. Either go commando or way, way skimpier if you’re rocking a look that shows off every detail of your underwear like this.
Okay, we’re not totally sure whether you can call it VPL when it’s a bodysuit and not actual panties, but hey - they’re functioning as underwear here, so we’re going to go with it. Kourtney was snapped meeting Scott Disick for lunch in 2016, and she decided to rock an all white look. Super chic, in theory. The only problem is, she opted for a pair of white pants that are almost sheer - and clearly highlight every little bit of the bodysuit she’s wearing, even the parts that are covered by the jeans. Well - supposed to be covered. We get that thick denim may not always be ideal in the California heat, but… a little bit thicker than this would have been good. Just because you’re wearing a bodysuit doesn’t mean it’s okay for everyone to know exactly what you would look like if you weren’t wearing the jeans at all.
This shot is from way back when, because let’s be honest - Mischa Barton has kind of fallen off everyone’s radar in the past little bit. We’d love to see her gracing our screens again like she did when she played the privileged Marissa Cooper on The O.C. , but that time hasn’t come yet. While we love the fact that she got a bit curvier as she grew up and didn’t try to diet down to a Hollywood size zero, we have to be honest - these colourful jeans are doing her absolutely zero favours. We’re not sure who thought that having pants with such thin material was a good idea, but if the celebs on this list show you one thing, it’s that you should try to find pants that have thicker material. The VPL in these yellow pants is just bad.
To be honest, we didn’t even know VPL in the front was really possible, but… when you rock a skin tight leather dress, apparently, it is. Former Twilight cast member Ashley Greene looks stunning in this leather dress - she has a killer body and is often spotted by the paparazzi leaving the gym after a hard workout. However, she really should have opted to go commando, or wear underwear that is barely there, because seeing the outline of her panties on the front of the dress definitely makes the outfit less sexy. When you wear such bodycon clothing, you have to be mindful of what you’re wearing underneath because any lump or bump will totally ruin the look of the garment, as Greene probably found out once she saw pictures of herself from this event.
We totally love Rita Ora’s all-white, slightly retro, sporty outfit here - it’s so her, and is just plain adorable. The only problem is her selection of underwear underneath the thin white skirt here. While her skirt isn’t a Kardashian level extra tight pencil skirt, it’s definitely fitted - and unfortunately that means you can see every line of her underwear. You can also see the seams of her skirt, so obviously the skirt is made of a very thin material, which is something to consider when incorporating it into your outfit. Going commando may have been a bit scandalous in this particular case, given how sheer the thinness of the material makes this skirt, but at least opt for underwear that doesn’t leave such visible lines if you want to truly rock your look.
Here’s the problem with sweatpants. When celebrities are on the red carpet in a figure-hugging gown, they’re more than willing to sacrifice a little comfort in order to get the look that they want. So, VPL really only occurs on the red carpet if a star has made a poor undergarment selection, or if they’re rocking a crazy tight dress. When they’re just running errands in sweatpants, they’re not willing to sacrifice comfort to the same degree - and since many sweatpants and yoga pants are made of fairly thin material that doesn’t exactly have a ton of structure, that means a VPL is always just a step away. Katy Perry is gorgeous, but even she can’t sell VPL - although given that she’s wearing Uggs, a full sweat suit, and a big bun and headband, we have a feeling she’s not really worried about how she looks.
