Exactly! You did not get sent to the office without a note or a phone call to home. And the uncertainty about exactly what was awaiting when you got home was part of the punishment, but you knew that you were not just going to be asked what you had done to get a spanking at school.
Parents typically took what teachers and principals said at their word, and figured you had probably done even more than what was being reported before you actually got caught and punished. Plus at least at my schools, both elementary and high school, an "official" disciplinarian like a principal or assistant principal would spank longer and harder than any of the teachers usually did. But parents would see that as a warmup, and give you the real spanking at home. A few times I was actually taken back to the principal's office by my mother to be spanked again, either in front of the principal or by the principal. I'm told by relatives that I was quite a handful when growing up, although I was never in any really serious trouble I had a way of pushing people's buttons to aggravate them and did not like to sit still at my desk and listen to whatever subject was being taught. Today they would probably say I had ADHD, but that was unheard of in the 50's, it was called insubordination.
Reading some of these makes me realize just how good I had it growing up. By the way, I use the term "growing up" very loosely as I still have not, even in my mid 40's LOL. I started grade school (Kindergarten) in the fall of 1979 and I graduated high school in the spring of 1992. By then, I believe that type of discipline in schools was on it's way out. I never saw it, all throughout my time in school. I heard that they had that option, but, it was never actually carried out. So, I inquired about it one day, as I had heard stories about it from what was appearing more and more to be a bygone era by then. One teacher told me "yeah...it's pretty much a paper tiger these days...I mean....I suppose they could still do it, but with so many lawsuits coming down, who really wants to roll the dice?". Another teacher said "let's put it this way. no teacher or principal ever got the boot for giving a kid detention". Back in the 1950's I suppose being fired for administering that type of punishment was unheard of. But, a few decades later, once lawsuits started, individuals were being suspended and/or terminated. My, how things change.

My mom is a retired teacher, having retired in 1998. She says that when she remembers when corporal punishment first came under attack. She worked with someone who lost their job and subsequently, their teaching career because they were named in a CP lawsuit. I recently spoke with a friend of my mom's who was a student teacher under her and her career began around 1994 or so, and CP was six foot under by then. She told me that other teachers that she worked with back in the early days of her career told her stories of fellow teachers getting the ax because of CP lawsuits. She said "number one, I would never do that to a child anyway, especially one that wasn't mine. But, on top of that, I kind of like the idea of a steady income and eating and staying cool in the summer heat and warm in the dead of winter. I couldn't imagine playing roulette with my career over some misbehaving kids. Detention, Saturday detention, in school suspension, out of school suspension, alternative schools. That's the way now. The ones who came before us may think we are softies, but we have to do what we have to do in order to survive". She made a lot of good points. I imagine that those who run the schools these days came up in a time where CP was not only dead, but they never even heard any stories about it from the past.
