In 2011 my husband Phillip and I, packed up our things and moved to Sucre, Bolivia for volunteer work. When we first started telling friends and family of our plans to move to South America, some were surprised. Understandably. I’m deathly afraid of bugs and wasn’t known as one to take big risks. But we knew why we were going -to help others- and to me, that was enough to keep us moving on this path. It was a very exciting time for us.
The only way I could describe our willingness to make such a huge change in our lifestyle for those months was like this – it’s like taking a huge leap off the edge of a mountain and just having faith that God would catch us on our way down. We knew he would.
Up until that point in my life, it was the grandest adventure I had ever embarked on. And boy was it amazing. We met incredible human beings, spent weekends in some of the most isolated places on this earth, touched a culture that has gone unchanged since ancient times and had the privilege of seeing the faces light up in the people who were learning that our Heavenly Father truly loved each and every one of them.
It was the grandest adventure and some may have called it a risk. But we’re so happy we took that leap. Because, in case you’re wondering, he caught us. Just as we knew he would.
Our time in Bolivia forever changed me. It gave me a better picture of the world. What was important and what was simply, unnecessary excess. My heart grew as I saw the conditions people in third world countries lived in and upon returning to the states, there was no way I could unsee these things. I wanted to make a difference someway, somehow. And this is how JoyBound was born. An ethical lifestyle brand that I used to employ artisans in… Sucre Bolivia. I was using my time and efforts to help some of the amazingly talented people I met. One of whom welcomed me into her home to teach me how to sew as I fought the heart wrenching pains of homesickness. This brand embodied my renewed outlook on life. That is, to live every single day to the full and choose joy even through difficult moments. It has been such a privilege to encourage others to live with a similar mission.
And this has all brought me to this point in my life. When we moved back home, we had just learned that our biggest dream had come true…I was pregnant with our first baby. A boy whose love would soon bring me to my knees. Since then, we’ve welcomed a second boy that is definitely my wild child.
Currently, I’ve decided to take a step back of sorts from the business I love to make sure that I’m living the most JoyBound life possible and training my little ones to do the same. To make sure that I’m taking it all in and truly basking in this season of our lives. It may be messy at times but I love it and I wouldn’t have it any other way. This is our story and I hope to use it to inspire others to live boldly and seek joy in the everyday no matter how tough things can get. To empower women (and men) to enjoy what I like to call “dancing in the chaos” because as I say quite often, these are the days. #JoyBoundLife
