Ellen Kathleen Pompeo (/pʌmˈpɛoʊ/, born November 10, 1969) is an American actress and producer. Born in Everett, Massachusetts, Pompeo moved to New York City, at the age of twenty-six, where she was discovered by a casting director who signed her for an advertisement campaign for L'Oreal. She made her screen debut with NBC's legal drama Law & Order, and then appeared in several other television shows, including the dark comedy Strangers with Candy, the medical drama Strong Medicine and the sitcom Friends.
Pompeo made her feature film debut in 1999 with the romantic comedy Coming Soon, and went on to play minor roles in films like In the Weeds and Mambo Café but found little success initially. A turning point came in her career in 2002, when she gained wide recognition for her starring role in Brad Silberling's drama Moonlight Mile. Pompeo then starred in ABC's medical drama Grey's Anatomy (2005–present), and garnered worldwide recognition for her portrayal of the title character Dr. Meredith Grey. The role on the long running hit series earned her a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress – Television Series Drama nomination, and the Screen Actors Guild Award. The character became widely popular, making Pompeo one of the most popular TV actresses.
In 2015, Pompeo was ranked fourth in the list of highest paid TV actresses by Forbes, with the earnings of $11.5 million. Pompeo's other notable film roles include the comedy Old School (2003), the superhero film Daredevil (2003), the caper film Art Heist (2004), and the comedy drama Life of the party (2005). In October 2007, she was honored with Special Achievement in Entertaining by the National Italian American Foundation for her achievement in the entertainment industry. Pompeo married producer Chris Ivery in 2007 and the couple have two children together.

Meredith Grey is moving on -- and baring it all!
Leading lady Ellen Pompeo is proving that even after eleven seasons, and the shocking death of McDreamy, Grey's Anatomy is hotter than ever.
The stars of Shonda Rhimes ' hit ABC shows took over four collector's edition covers of the Sept. 11 issue of Entertainment Weekly Magazine , but none of the others hold a candle to Pompeo's sultry shoot.
Dressed in only a white lab coat, a stethoscope, and red patent leather pumps, the Grey's gal is single and sensational with some strategically crossed body parts.
After last season's shocking decision to kill off Patrick Dempsey from the show, Pompeo finally addresses the "sexist" response that some fans had to McDreamy's death. "All of a sudden, Patrick [Dempsey] leaves, and it’s like, 'Oh my God, Meredith’s gonna get killed with Alzheimer’s! The show couldn’t possibly go on without the man!'" she told the magazine.
Back in August, Rhimes revealed the reason behind the show's decision to kill off Derek. " "What were the options? Either Der was going to walk out on Mer and leave her high and dry, and what was that going to mean?" the Grey's showrunner said at the summer TCA press tour. "That would suggest the love wasn't true, the thing we had said for 11 years was a lie."
"Meredith and Derek's love had to remain Meredith and Derek's love," Rhimes further explained. "As painful as it was for me as a storyteller, the only way to preserve what felt true to me was Derek was going to have to die for that love to remain honest."
So what's next for Meredith in season 12 now that she's flying solo? "We do have this world in which Meredith is single, and she is living this life that she hadn't thought she was going to be living again," Rhimes teased.

Grey's Anatomy premieres Thursday, Sept. 24 at 8 p.m.ET/PT on ABC.
