I really don't intend to insult anybody's favorite series, so please keep in mind that these are simply my thoughts on it. I might spoil a couple of things just to make my point (I will try and keep the characters nameless just in case) and I apologize in advance. I would not consider myself a hater. I swear I try to look at the bright side of things constantly. I was super interested on this series because of its high score and praise, but at one point I genuinely thought I was watching a different anime than everyone else because I couldn't find any of the good things people were talking about. I binge-watched this series completely in one day from beginning to end, but I kept finding myself pausing, screaming and shaking my head at the screen every five to ten minutes because I couldn't believe how convenient and cringeworthy the dialog was, how gratuitous gore and nudity were, how badly written and removed from reality interactions are and most of all, how everything is so awfully convenient and non-consequential. Maybe the manga is better and is also better explained, but I was completely unable to suspend my disbelief. I just finished watching, and I'm actually super angry at the whole series, so I'm blurting out fresh thoughts that may be all over the place. Sorry for that. I want to start with the good things: The BG art is great, especially in the first episode. It starts slowly sinking to an anime "average-good" level, but is never bad. You notice how many early shots have great use of perspective, and nature detail, but later on you notice that more often than not shots start getting flatter and less interesting. Now the bad things. The gore and nudity wears off its shock value very very quickly and it becomes a gratuitous gimmick to earn the label of "shocking" or "edgy". Deaths that are intended to be shocking and gory happen way too often lessening its shock value. Same thing with nakedness. At the beginning you could argue that the characters are either "too naive" or "too removed from humanity" to care about shame or clothes, but it loses its strength quickly becoming boring and uninteresting. Also child rape. Really? Way to grab only from the top shelf. There are more effective/subtle ways to convey abuse or cruelty without dialing it to eleven. Is just too lazy. Invisible cutting hands?? Having invisible limbs is a great idea. Having them have "rules" is even better (only reaching 2 mts? cool, a limitation, I'm in). I'm super into ESP based plots (Akira is my favorite movie of all time). The use of hand-shaped stains is very clever and effective (when we see the bloody hand print in the scientist back and all over the room when she awakens her powers are very strong scenes) BUT if you're going that road, use hands as hands: crush, punch, grab, push, but you don't get to CUT stuff. If you plan to use them as cutting elements have them as shape-shifting-non-specific limbs that do a variety of things. But if you're going with hands, then be consequent. Maybe there is a good story, but the way the delivery via dialog and actions makes no sense to me and are just too convenient. Everybody ends up in the same shore and the same neighborhood. It felt as if everyone had an involuntary GPS because everyone kept running into each other constantly. Also, how the hell the characters made a living? They went to school ONCE, lived in a convenient gigantic house, never talked about financial troubles and were able to bring in a large number of people to live with them after the first five minutes of interaction. Bulls***. Exposition couldn't be clunkier, with a character out of frame stating what is happening in our speech-impaired protagonist's mind. "She saw you happy yesterday so she's doing this now", "she saw you sad before so she's doing this other thing so that you're not sad anymore" and "she cut her hair to pretend to be this other person and talk in her behalf". That's the worst kind of exposition. The. Worst. And happens at least five times in the series. The male protagonist's cousin is intolerable, following every single cliche of a soap-opera-like-broken-hearted character, jumping to wrong conclusions constantly at least once per episode without learning a single thing from all the previous times when THE EXACT SAME THING happened. Plus her asking the stupidest questions is so incredibly cringy. "Would you grab my boob if I let you?" What is that!! Mood shifts between "yay this is awesome" to "leave me alone" are astonishingly fast and too conveniently often. What's ahead is pretty spoilery but "Get out of my house oh no now you're family" or "I hate you, oh this meal is delicious I want to be here forever" or even "hey you destroyed all my limbs and I almost died oh sure we're friends now", or the worst (HEAVY SPOILER): "You killed my father and sister but I love you don't go away" is nothing short from complete bulls***. This is not how people behave, ever. I could not feel any kind of sympathy or empathy for the main character, even when she was supposedly "naive" and "charming" at the beginning. I was willing to give her a pass at the beginning because she was disposing of military men who're supposed to be the bad guys, but then she goes and kills innocent bystanders, which leads me to... Characters that appear and have no importance at all. The two detectives and the clunky secretary did nothing. I suspect that in the manga they might have done more, but in this series they were absolutely pointless. Making rules, disregarding them and making some more unexplained ones is a real pet peeve of mine. SPOILERS: If you cannot use your tentacle hands when hurt, make it clear at the beginning and don't use it only ONCE to force your plot into working. Having a "most powerful character" and then having an "even more powerful" character is too easy of a device. DBZ and Toriko get a pass because they are shonen and thrive in exaggeration, but this is supposed to be all serious and dramatic, you cannot have that. On that regard, Elfen Lied has just too many flaws to be taken seriously, but that's what its going for. Plus this might be me, but the slowly walking character looking at the floor because she's creepy is very overused, to the point, again, that it lost its effectiveness and becomes a gimmick. Am I nitpicking? I dunno, I think all the aforementioned elements are pretty broad sins that are spread all over the series. I could keep going. I'm sure the manga is way better, but this was the biggest disappointment anime has ever given me.

I feel funny being an amateur anime "critic". I'm no expert, but I do enjoy anime and have seen dozens, if not hundreds, over the years. Elfin Lied is one of the ones that goes down as a classic anime in my book and I feel it will definitely last in anime history. The moral compass in this series is complex and lets you view what's considered "evil" from both sides and question what it is and how it's created. There are definitely very brutal scenes and graphic violence shown. This doesn't particularly bother me, but if you have young children, it certainly wouldn't hurt to watch bits of this yourself first so you can judge whether they'd understand it or handle it. The opening song is to die for (I actually put it on my IPod) and the art work accompanying it is clearly an homage to the artist Gustav Klimt who created paintings like "The Woman in Gold". I really love this anime but there are two things that bother me slightly. The first is the drawing style used for the anime. This is a slightly older style and not as detailed as I'd prefer. I feel it could've been done slightly better. My adult son considers this his favorite anime and doesn't mind the drawing style whatsoever so I guess it's a matter of tastes. I find that the story is so compelling that the drawing style doesn't take away too much from enjoying it. The other drawback is strictly when it's on Amazon Prime. They have deleted scenes and I cannot stand censorship in any way, shape, or form. I don't understand why this is done . I am an adult who would like to decide on my own what I do or do not watch. The deleted scenes, funnily enough, aren't even violent ; they're of one girl touching another girls breast, scenes similar like that, and frankly being a silly Japanese anime. Why it's ok to leave in scenes of bloody decapitations and take out the innocent flirting is a question left only to the strange person who decided to cut those particular scenes. The anime deserves a 5 star rating and is, overall, one of the best animes I've ever seen. I recommend this to any anime fan.

To summarize what I just watched, it's a harem where most of the female characters have a pretty dark origin. A love triangle exist between the protagonist and two female characters; they're connected through a series of experiences that they can't seem to remember and it ends up being revealed towards the end of the season. It touches on feeling excluded/pushed away from everyone and one person trying to understand; that's essentially how all of the relationships are created just from different angles. The story sorta pans out okay. You have connections going every which way so it can be a bit much to take in, but there are some that you can become attached to. Some almost feel forced while others simply go nowhere. I didn't know this was a horror type anime, but damn they made it clear in the first episode. If you're not a fan of gore or nudity then this might not be for you, but if you don't mind it and you've felt the pain of being excluded or misunderstood you may enjoy this. Just to add on, they are not shy about nudity and there is sexual ideas/actions that are presented. This appears to be a one-off meaning there is no second season in terms of a show, but there is a magna and I've read they totally derailed the story going forward so take this for what it is and enjoy what it has to offer. I don't think I've come across an anime like this and it is unique in it of itself.

I have not finished it but.....I had to say something about some of the reviews I read on Amazon. This is a partial quote, ".....hyper violence is cool...." then they go on to say "....a bit pervy unnecessarily....". Let that sink in. Several other reviewers that gave it 3 or less stars seemed to concur with this reviewer. Either liking or fine with the hyper violence but the nudity/sexuality was too much. Smh. Mind boggling to me and kinda scary the more I think about it. I have less and less hope for humans when I think of people so.....afraid nudity/sexuality but fine with and even seeking acts of extreme violence. Ok, that's out of the way. The 4 or 5 episodes I watched are excellent imo despite the somewhat poor animation quality. Not bad mind you but no where near the quality/style of animation in "Young Justice". There are several sub-plots pretty well developed so far and I hope they continue. If you don't like violence stay away. If you don't like T&A or yes some fan service, stay away. If you don't mind or enjoy both you may like this thrown in with some neat plots and interesting if annoyingly silly sometimes characters.

A very moving story, with characters that have depth and many of us might identify with. The story of a young man and his encounter with a mutant human and how their relationship develops. HIs cousin is also a major character in this story. The main character has a suppressed memory that is hinted at but not revealed until the last two episodes. (I know I am a bit sparse on the storyline here, but I don't want to give too much away) Overall, it is really about how humans treat each other and how different people react differently to the same situation. It can get quite emotional and the last episode should make you lachrymose. There is a lot of gore and mostly gratuitous nudity, a couple of those nude scenes are meant to show innocence /naiveté. (I have no idea why the title and episode are in German, there are a number of Japanese anime that do that) The opening song, "Lilium" is beautiful, almost haunting chant in Latin, It is one of the best opening songs I have heard.

Being that the anime was released over a decade ago, I get the feeling it is standing the test of time... it's gory and has some nudity but all-in-all the story itself is fairly decent. They could have delved into a few points that were never addressed, almost like they wanted to add more into the anime itself but were constricted to a limited amount of episodes. There is a fine line between good and evil, and I really do think that the over-all theme was a nice touch. It allows you to connect with both sides even if they don't emphasis too much on character development. As long as you keep an open mind and aren't too uptight pertaining to the R-rated content you should find the beauty behind this anime. - Personally not a fan of English voice overs. I'd rather read the subtitles and keep the original Japanese dialog. (I'm actually going to check if there is a manga that covers what the anime has left out. Interested to see if it clears up any unanswered questions.)

Remembered for its EXTREME violence, which was startling at the time. The trope of "girl with psychic powers exploited and experimented on by government" may have started here...

This is not a show for the light of heart at one point I described the gut wrenching ups and downs as a roller coaster from hell to a passerby at the public hotspot i was watching it at. I'm sure the hysterical crying perked their curiosity The story picks up quick and I mean quick the first seen starts out with the goriest scene I have seen in all my life but it's not the action or gore that kept me watching as much as it was the intense drama or more accurately the traumatic horror that each of the character's story's put you through. now, I'm a grown man and cried my eyeballs out in a public place and for a few days after I couldn't think about this show without crying and yes I had a friend ask me to watch the last episode so she wouldn't have to go through the trauma but when she saw the complete mental breakdown I had she won't let me tell her how it ends long story short this show is amazing and if your into roller coasters this is the ride from hell for you!

The Diclonius, a mutated homo sapien that is said to be selected by God and will eventually become the destruction of mankind, possesses two horns in their heads, and has a "sixth sense" which gives it telekinetic abilities. Due to this dangerous power, they have been captured and isolated in laboratories by the government. Lucy, a young and psychotic Diclonius, manages to break free of her confines and brutally murder most of the guards in the laboratory, only to get shot in the head as she makes her escape. She survives and manages to drift along to a beach, where two teenagers named Kouta and Yuka discovers her. Having lost her memories, she was named after the only thing that she can now say, "Nyuu," and the two allow her to stay at Kouta's home. However, it appears that the evil "Lucy" is not dead just yet...
