There's a Grandma in Issan that takes in strays and she treats their various skin ailments by covering them with used motor oil. I've seen the results and it's amazing. Now I'm sure there's someone that will fret over the hazards of covering a dog in oil, but these are dogs that have been cast aside by all and are the kind that everyone runs from/avoids. She nurses them back to health and they are eternally grateful to her. They end up being good natured, nice looking dogs. Just my bit...

Several days ago I was reading about using Ivermactin.
Maybe this will help. One day about 3 years ago, i found two small pups on my front porch. M & f English Pointers. The were covered with scabs and cuts and their skin was just hanging on them with no hair. The pound would have put them asleep, due to the health condition. I decided to nurse them back to health. They both had mange and on and on.
I found out the feed store for farm animals sold the ivermectin in bulk (50 ml.) medical bottle w/ rubber syringe type top. $33.00USD. I can treat a 65# dog for 4 years for:
Mange- Pin worms - round worms -lung worms -Micro falaria -Heart worms and fleas for
FOUR YEARS WITH THAT ONE BOTTLE. (But not Hook worms or Whip)
Check this so you understand dosage. I am not a VET....
1 ml = 10 MG Break these down from a 40# dog to
Mange : Daily= 1/2 ml or .5 ml for 4 weeks, if not cleared up, continue for 4 more weeks. When it looks cleared up "CONTINUE FOR FOUR MORE WEEKS" If you don't get them all you will probable be starting over! Sometimes you can never cure mange completely. But with the 50ml bottle it would be around $30 to $40 dollars for a 3 month effort.
The test for mange are only 50% accurate so that is the reason for the last four weeks.
All worms listed too, include HEART WORMS, plus Fleas Treat :
40 # dogs 6/10 or .6 ml monthly. * It wouldn't heart to do it two days in a row or
I use a 3 ml syringe if you are doing more the one dog. I do not inject.. this can lead to problems. I draw the fluid form the rubber cap and inject it in milk or what ever they like to drink.
My vet uses the same method but buys it in 200ml bottles, that is how he makes a profit.
To end, the two worms that it does not kill; Hook and Whip. While you are in the feed store, look for "Fenbendazole 10% suspension" it is for horses, goats cattle. It never will mention dogs. Give your dog 10X what you would give a horse. 50 # dog
read label for horse, give what a 500 # horse would take. It comes in a large plastic
caulking type gun. (10 times what a horse 75 # dog = 750 # horse ) I know most of you will check this out before you use it!!! I did.
Do remember Vets won't be real happy about you doing it is may, but in my case with
4 dogs and my disability income I have no other choice.

I heard this too, and the vet said the things in oil would in some way harm them , but they were on the way to dying. My Doctor says there are things in the food we eat that is going to kill me.
Hi just a bit of correction to your posting: Ivermectin does kill hookworms and whipworms. It does not kill tapeworms.
Unless the types of hookworms in thailand are a lot different than the ones encountered in Australia.
It was a form of treatment that my large breeder clients were using for econimical reasons too; if you can find Ivomec R/V as an oral sheep wormer ( liquid) that's even cheaper than injectables: easy to adminster either straight in the mouth or mixed with some meat. Ivomec R/V MSD was only available in 2-5 liter bottles so was rebottled in 100 ml bottles for the breeders: 1ml/10kg once every 2 weeks for young puppies(for intestinal parasites and heartworm) then once monthly.
We also used it orally every 2-3 days to help treat demodectic mange cases.
Sinc then for demodectc mange we use Dectomax: a newer formulation of the family of Ivermectin: as injections: it does not sting like Ivomec. Dectomax is sold to cattle farmers: .6ml per 10kg once a week for 6-8 weeks depending on how bad the mange is.
I'm reading the articles also and this is the first time I see people posting information of killing the source of the problem, as most pets suffering from Mange are caused by mites. And as the saying go's, if you not fix the problem at the roots you will never fix it.
Motor oil will indeed help in killing mites and flees, but on the other hand it is also not very health for the patient. And now-a-day you can find an almost unbelievable assortment of doggy treatment shampoos which all do the trick without trying the kill the patient.

didnt know thailand had hookworm/ here, we dont. nor heartworm unless a patient comes from the states...
yeah, the oil thing was used here in israel also on donkeys and horses... but once again, ivermac ORAL for equines works great... also, there is one kind of mange that we have here that doesnt travel over 800 meters above sea level... horse vet here told me of a hanover horse with this particular mange indigenous to israel and the horse never gets it when living in any area over 800 meters. if he 'comes down frmo the mountain' his mange comes back...

I've used this formula for mange - described on the following site - on my ridgeback puppy and it seems to work quite well for scabies (sarcoptic mange) - others apparently have used it successfully for demodectic mange
it is basically supersaturated solution of borax in 1% hydrogen peroxide, applied after shampooing and left to dry on the dog without toweling

They are very near the Democracy Monument - a few doors down from the 7-Eleven, their storefront display is mainly laboratory glassware and medical instruments. They are a very reputable medical supply house and fine to deal with in person.
Dealing with them on the phone can be problematic however, even if you are Thai. Of three phone calls we made to them, the woman who answered the first time (speaking in Thai with my Thai wife) said they didn't have Borax, on the second call, a man who spoke English with me said they did have Borax and it cost 3,420 baht per Kg (about 100 US dollars), on the third phone call, the same man told my wife (in Thai) that 450 grams of Borax cost 320 baht (about 9.50 US dollars). 50% Hydrogen Peroxide costs 200 baht (about 6 US dollars) for a one liter bottle. He also gave directions and said we could park in their spaces at the back of the building.
I bought the chemicals for the formula from them - the Borax is B.P. quality and it did indeed cost 320 baht for 450 grams
I applied the solution to my pup using a spray bottle and it relieved the redness on his skin within minutes and seems to be healing the pup's scabies without any issues - he immediately stopped scratching and biting himself and does not lick the powdery residue that must be left on his skin. No further hair loss.
considering the nasty side effects of the big pharma crap the Vet wanted to sell me - it seems like it might be the ticket
Whatever properties it may have doesn't outweight the dangers.
Dogs usually like to lick themselves and having motoroil in their digestive tract is not a good or healthy thing.
The chemical structure of borax acts like thousands of tiny razor blades which will scratch and cut mites and many other insects, thus killing them.
Please can you ask your wife what is the Thai name for Borax. I would be interested in getting the Thai, not the Farang, price!
Happened to be looking for oil paints but found borax in the cub scouts shop "Look Seua" near national stadium.
As an aside, that shop's also handy if you want any dangerous acid, or common school lab compounds, which are sold at eye level to kids as well as adults. Amazing Thailand.
An update on my treating sarcoptic mange with Borax in 1% Hydrogen Peroxide. It completely cured my dog in about 6 weeks of completely soaking the dog using the spray bottle every three or 4 days after shampooing for three weeks or so and then spraying it on any areas that seemed to need it without shampooing beforehand for the next three weeks or so. The mange has not reoccurred and I get compliments on a regular basis on the appearance of the dog.
Additionally I feed raw meats, chicken, fish, and eggs with small portions of blended vegetables such as green beans, golden squash, carrots, etc - this produces an entirely different looking, more intelligent dog than those that are fed on grains - more muscle and highly alert and energetic but also more stable than many of the frantic gate dogs one sees in all the sois ...
pongosnodgrass - the word my wife and other Thai use for Borax is "borack" - if you go to the Vidyasom store you will get the regular price - it is posted on the shelf the boxes of borax are sitting on in the showroom ...

some good info on demodectic mange, which is the more serious and life-threatening of the two (it's actually thought to be an auto-immune disorder)
I managed to cure a dog who had hardly any hair left with Coconut oil mixed with Sulphor. Rub on the skin every day and after about four weeks the dog is good as new. Full hair and lease of new life, he is happy as a sandboy.
whats the price now in thailand for ivomec of the better brands (spain/etc. not thai brands)...
thinking as possible present for father in law's hunting village dogs... he does spend his very few satang on buying ivomac but buys stuff that doesnt seem to really work... i can get a prescription for it here-- the injectable ivermectic but can be given orally or used even in ears with mites-- thought it would be a useful present for him if it was a savings in cost-- anybody know costs these days? i'll also bring some dontral brand pills worming meds for them-- here they are over the counter in pet stores...
i usually buy merial (netherlands) 100ml bottle about 1400 baht.
but there are also others around, also in different concentrations.
is it injectable? or oral? thats about 175 shekels. i buy a 50 ml injectable from decent brand for about 120 shekels, good for a lot of doses injectable or less, oral...
since thai village dogs have no collie in them, injectable shouldnt cause any problems; dont know if i could carry the syringes and needles though-- wonder if he can get them...?
drontal plus should be good though-- its one tab per 10 kg and not expensive for me...

yes, is for injection, 1.0% w/v sterile solution of ivermectin. called ivomec.
kills also some worms like roundworms, lungworm, lice, mites, heartworm larvae, tick and flea.
there is also one which kills tapeworm as well, haven't got it though.
deworming tablets here like praferan and anthelmintes, with praziquantel, febantel, pyrantel about 20 bt per tablet.
syringes and needles you can buy by the box in any pharmacy here.
